Reading the posts here I've just realized how much I've overlooked (unintentionally) the works of Indian authors 🤔. Among the very few I've read the only book I've truly loved was A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth.

Though there is one book by a British Indian author which I found pretty interesting - The Impressionist by Hari Kunzru. Set in the early 20th century, it's the story of a boy belonging to a high-caste affluent Indian family who discovers that he is the result of an affair between his Indian mother and an Englishman and how that knowledge affects the rest of his life.

There are some hidden gems in Indian literature! Ismat Chugtai , Vijay Tendulkar , Amrita Pritam... They are amazing!
There is a collection of Ismat's stories , 'Lifting the veil'... you will love it. Manto though not Indian , is as good. Vijay's Ghasiram Kotwal is heart wrenching... So is Aadhe Adhure (unable to recall writer's name)
Then there is Jaya , Madhavi , Shakntala... such classics!

In recent times only The Immortals of Meluha appealed me , Oath of vayuputra sucks 👎🏼
I am no big fan of Chetan Bhagat , Durjoy n all...in this genre I liked only Anuja Chauhan's 'Zoya Factor'

Amitav Ghosh bhi hai , but I am not his fan... Ghost of Indira Gandhi is still okay...

R Tagore's Sheshar Kobita... I have read it's translation ... 'The farewell song'... You will forget Nicholas sparks 😆

Aadhe Adhure is by Mohan Rakesh, it is translated to English as Halfway House.😊

Ghashiram Kotwal is disturbing as well as heart wrenching. I had both these as part of my course work lol. These two are plays by the way.

I recently read Anuja Chauhan's Those Pricey Thakur Girls and liked it.

@TM there are lots of really good Indian authors, especially if you look into translations from regional languages.

If you are looking for mythological/historical fiction I can suggest a few:
Yajnaseni by Pratibha Ray
Mahamoh by Pratibha Ray
Palace of Illusions by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni ( I personally prefer Yajnaseni to this book though)
Second Turn (translation of Malayalam novel Randamoozham) by M T Vasudevan Nair
Asura by Anand Neelakantan
Rani by Jaishree Mishra
Jaya by Devdutt Patnaik
The Great Indian Novel by Shashi Tharoor

These are what come to my mind right now, I can suggest more when I remember lol.

I can name a lot of Malayalam novels but I am not sure if translations are available for them. But if you can, do read the Legends of Khasak by O V Vijayan.

I cried reading God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy.
I also liked Kiran Desai's Inheritance of Loss.

I also love reading translations of Bengali novels, especially Bibhootibhooshan Bandopadhyay and Ashapurna Devi. Anything by Rabindranath Tagore is a great read. R K Narayan is someone whose books I have grown up reading.😊

The only Vikram Seth book I have read is An Equal Music. I thought it was average really. I am yet to read A suitable boy, though. It is definitely his most acclaimed.

Sounds pretty good! :)

@Bold - Exactly! The first two were good. The first one, especially. In the last one, he stretched things a little too much. And I am no fan of Chetan Bhagat and Durjoy Dutta. I have not tried Anuja Chauhan though.

I am no fan of Nicholas Sparks anyway. His books are too romantic and emotional! Not my type. 😆
