I usually post here to ask for recommendations. Any kind of Google search on contemporary Indian writing leads me to three authors, mostly- Vikram Seth, Amitav Ghosh and Anita Desai. And Chetan Bhagat and Durjoy Datta if I look for something more mass-appealing.

I want to go beyond them. I am looking for underrated or less well known but solid books written by Indian authors. I'd prefer something from the historical/mythological genre. Or comedy. I don't think I have read too many Indian books in that genre. So if anybody has got anything to recommend, I'd be very grateful. Thank you.

Yep. And LOVED it! Except for the third part. Loved the first two. :)

Have you read Train to Pakistan by khushwant Singh? I have not read that book. But I've heard a lot about it.
Also I've read about Pakistani author Saadat Hasan Manto. He is also famous for his poignant stories of partition. Haven't read any of his books too yet.

Hey,I haven't read the third part 😆Actually I had bought the first two as combo pack from an online store.I loved them.And after a year the third book was released.So I bought it to complete the trilogy for my book self ,but to tell you truth I wasn't interested in reading it anymore,had lost interest.Its still sitting on my self ,complete with the plastic wrapper,didn't even bother to open it.I have been contemplating reading the first two books again before going for third.😃

BTW have you read Mrityunjaya by Shivaji Sawant.I have read the marathi book,you check out the english translation.The book is based on Karna.

'Sriman Yogi' by Ranjit Desai is biographical of chatrapathi shivaji maharaj😊'Panipat' by Vishwas Patil is another favourite of mine.Most of the books I have read on historicals & mythological events are in Marathi.So I am not sure if the english translations are available.

The god of small things by Arundhati Roy is a beautiful book⭐️

Hey even i liked Mrityunjaya very much. Have you read Radheya by Ranjeet Desai? I loved that too. Yayati by V. S. Khandekar is also very nice.

I am yet to read Train to Pakistan. I 've heard a lot about it too (and I have read some AMAZING book reviews) but somehow never got around to it.

I have not heard of Saadat Hasan Manto, though. I'll check out his books. Thanks. :)

The third part was a HUGE disappointment. He made a complete khichdi of the story and I had to give up mid-way. Read it if you have time but to be honest, I wouldn't recommend it. You'll probably lose interest again.

I have to check it out. Unlike many people, I absolutely LOVE reading translated works! Thanks a lot for the recommendation. :)

Hi,No I haven't read Radheya,I will add it to my TBR list.😊

Yes,I have read yayati.Have you read Yugandhara by Dr.Sumati Kshetramade?I liked the book.Also Meeri by Sane Guruji is a lovely book.😃

Good to know you love translated works.I am sure you will love them.If you read Hindi books then you can try reading Munshi Premchand,his books are heart-touching and beautifully written.Few years ago I had read his novel Nirmala,its still my favourite.He writes about common people and their issues.In this novel Nirmala ,he has highlighted child marriage,and dowry system.
