and I dont know why there is never a discussion about her breast implants... i mean ppl discuss alot about shilpa's nose job but not madhuri's implants... hmmm STRANGE

i think anyone who should be on that list is rekha and hema... they were the best and should be on it

Shabana was very good in so many movies. Personally I don't like to brand any cinema as arty or commerical but that is how everyone does and even these actors divide cinema. For me an actor is truely versatile or has potential when he or she can get into the character, whatever that is.

Just because an actor wears a cotton saree sans make-up doesn't mean that she is brilliant performer and the one with glossy make-up and dancing ones are mediocre. The difference between art and commercial cinema. An actor gives several takes in any type of cinema and often we get confused between actual script of the cinema and actor'c calibre and praise the unworthy😛

Shabana Azmi has failed many times in commerical cinema. She was always mediocre in such movies and don't blame her looks because Smita Patil who isn't much of a looker, was equally good in commercial as well as arty ones. She just fit into every character she played. Now that is an actor with calibre. Shabana is someone who failed in commercial cinema and then decided to stick to art movies because that gave her name and fame. She always keeps herself at par with Smita Patil. According to me she is nowhere near Smita Patil, the actor.

Many could disagree with me but that is their choice. These are my views on Shabana Azmi.

Actually I forgot Rekha who is another versatile actor at par with Smita Patil.

I dont think Shabana failed in the "commercial cinema"...she has had some good roles in films like Thodi si Bewafaai, Amar Akbar Anthony, Fakira,Arth, Swarg Nark, Avtaar, Masoom...

where she had the scope to perform she delivered but when she was supposed to play a "show piece" like so many heroines of teh 70's 80's she failed coz she never had the look, style or glamour to succeed...

Who could compete with Zeenat Aman and Parveen Babi coz they were wow in those roles...

and of course the dream girl Hema...and rekha too...who could look great and act too

so naturally she focused on the "arty' roles which didnt require her to be glamorous...

and IMHO she did break the path on which Smita Patil, Deepti Naval, Nandita das, et al walked after her..😛

Personally I too think Smita Patil was a better actress than her...😃

Ash, We once had a huge debate on Art and Commercial cinema and actors in it where Qwerty supported arthouse and I, commercial. It was a fun debate😃 but due to recent changes on IF, a lot of old topics got deleted and that is gone too.

So try Smita vs. Shabana. Let us see if there are any takers like there are for Ash vs Sush 😛
