Yesteryear villain Pran celebrates his 62nd wedding anniversary today (April 18). A bash has been planned at his home in Union Park, Khar, with family and close friends.
Says his daughter Pinky Bhalla, "Dad is now 87 but he is still very alert, but old age keeps him homebound.
We are just getting together for a small celebration. My mother, Shukla, is not too well. She was hospitalised recently, so we're keeping it an intimate affair."
In the last few years, Pran has been leading a very quiet life. Though GenNow may not be too aware of him, the actor ruled B-Town as the leading baddie in the '60s and '70s.
His mere presence spelt doom. No parent wanted to name his or her child Pran, as that very name was synonymous with fear!
Willow talk
Apart from acting, Pran's other big passion is cricket. "He is an avid watcher and is currently hooked on to the on-going World Cup.
In fact, he'll much rather be watching the telly right through the celebrations if a match is on. He was extremely disappointed when India had to bow out.
He follows most of the matches and recalls all the scores," adds Bhalla. What's in a name?
Over two years ago, his biography titled '…and Pran' (penned by Bunny Reuben), was released by Amitabh Bachchan.
Both actors are best remembered for their roles in Prakash Mehra's Zanjeer, in which Pran played a Pathan.
The title of the autobiography was so chosen "because that was the way his name appeared in most film credits.
After all the lead actors' names, his name would always come at the end as 'and Pran'," adds Bhalla.
To coincide with the book release, a 'Hunt for Pran' contest was also organised.
The actor wanted to meet that 'brave' mother who had dared to name her son Pran. The actor everyone loves to hate, felt this was the biggest compliment a film villain could get.
Pran, who began acting with Yamla Jatan in 1940, made his debut as a villain in Khandan in 1942, before going on to do memorable roles in films like Ram Aur Shyam, Upkar, Shaheed, Purab Aur Paschim and Majboor, besides several others.
