god bless Dua!

Putting the surname of both parents...is not practical though....imagine when Dua has her kid.....that kid will have Padukone Singh plus the Dad's surname....too.....and imagine the long name of a child after a few generations...smiley36...I think more than the name ....both the parents should be equal in a child's life.....naam mein kya rakha hai...

nah I don’t think name me kya hain. If it’s such a trivial issue women woundnt need to fight just to keep their maiden name. It would be 50-50 choice among everyone. 50% people would have their mothers name instead of fathers but statistics is skewed indicating there is something wrong somewhere. And Name matters everywhere. It’s also symbolism that it’s okay to have mothers name.

On practical aspect, we are heading to in a society where it is based on choice so depending on What Dua prefers she can choose. And preferably by her generation we wold have much better system

Tbf, Spanish naming tradition keeps mother's name as the last name and Dad's surname as the middle name. So if we went by the Spaniards, Dua's name would be Dua Singh Padukone, her probable child's name would be Xyz dad-name Singh and so on and so forth.

In South, village names are used as identifiers in some communities like "Padukone" itself. So, names are pretty made up and fun lol.

In my family one of my closest relatives tried this 3 word names and gave up in 2 yrs when they had to apply for their kid’s passport. smiley36 It does make the kid’s life complicated.

Dont want to brag how smart I am, but finding a guy with my same surname was one of the key criterias of my life to avoid all these problems without losing my very strong feminist streak. smiley15smiley16

I was talking about the practical aspect and you may like to deny it but it will be a problem.....and no a normal child would not be able to choose the surname in normal circumstances....

Feminism is very good ....misdirected feminism is not.....the problem with modern feminism is not focusing where it is needed and getting entangled in trivial issues...like name....yes it is trivial....Dua would grow up how her parents raise her.....her surname will have zero effect on what she will be........Empower the women.....that is what will change the lives of women....not her surname.....

Why UK don’t give Citizenship if baby is born there irrespective of parents are citizens or not? Like how it is US, Canada?

no it’s not like US Canada. UK’s citizenship depends upon parents citizenship. I think they had it till the 80s or something. Currently either u have to be a citizen or u have to have ILR which is like PR. US Canada baby will get citizenship if they r born there irrespective of the parents citizenship.

Yeah it solves lots of problem. I know where BI ji is coming from. Name might sound trivial. But by principle I was never going to change my surname, none from my immediate family members of my generation did it either. But let’s think about my kid. Cant imagine my kid and me sharing 2 different surnames. I feel it’d have hurt me everyday. I would definitely be bothered by it. So what’d be my next step ? To change my surname so that I get the feeling of belongingness as well. And bam, the same then happens to my parents and myself.

I liked that in the USA, my kid had the option to be known by only first name. smiley16 It was cool. That’d be my second preference for my kid had I not got the guy to marry with same surname. smiley36

Yea I know this has nothing to do with the topic. But I wanted to say it anyway smiley36

It's not Amir Sonali movie. It is Akshay Khanna & Sonali movie Dahek.
