Review:
I went in to watch it with low expectations after the average reviews and BO performance and after finishing it,....I kind of understand why its not performing that well??? Did I hate it? No. It was an okay one time watch. But there are some major problems with the film:
1. The biggest one: imbalance of tone in the two halves. I really do think the overall story could have been impactful if executed well. However, the first and second halves have drastically different moods which for the cinema-going experience as a whole, doesn't work. The first half is all gags and extended skits and I honestly didn't mind it. The second half however is too sombre with some occasional laughs here and there. This significantly brings down the energy of the film and I kind of left the theatre feeling empty. They take SRK and the holidays period- not a nice combination really to have a semi-depressing ending. I wish they had found a way to make the ending a bit more cheerful in someway, despite the storyline and character deaths.
2. SRK's aura was not utilised properly. I will be blunt and say that I didn't think SRK's acting in Pathaan or Jawaan was any good but what those films did well was use SRK's superstar aura to great effect. With Dunki I felt like the character just didn't suit SRK at all. He is not convincing as a young guy (obviously) and I don't know what filters/effect they used on his face in those parts, it was awful to look at.
3. Forced messaging. I am not averse to social messages in movies if done smartly. Here they try extra hard to get the tears rolling in many places and that effort honestly makes it worse. I also don't think viewers will be all that thrilled to watch a preachy, kinda boring film, with a sad ending with their family during the ongoing end of year holidays.
4. Minor/moderate pet peeves that I just needed to state:
a. As someone who is somewhat interested in aviation, I couldn't help but question why were they flying Qatar airways to travel to Dubai from London. If my understanding of flights are correct they should be flying Emirates right? Because there should not be any direct Qatar airways flight from London to Dubai? (Correct me if I am wrong).
b. The way Tapsee's character fell dead suddenly in the end was odd.
Anyway, I really thought Tapsee did a good job though, with her performance. Also, Vicky Kaushal is such a gifted actor, he manages to be memorable even in a poorly fleshed out role.

To me, these detailed reviews are a pleasure to read (regardless the criticism). They make me reflect on the reception...
I only want to comment on the last lines. Until now; I only came across one interview with Tapsee...she told that Hirani contacted her after Manmirziyaan...I wondered why in the interview, she did not mention Vicky, too, who was her excellent co-star in this movie (and, btw. I also found Abhishek very good as Robbie...in my eyes, he is a good actor).

Can't wait to watch it again 😍
Will watch it 2 times today (back to back in two different theatres) (Ha, I love the nuances to discover)...and although I would like ShahRukh to focus on older avatars than the ones in the twenties/early thirties, I like his youthful energy he displays in Jawan and Dunki (and JTHJ, Fan, Dilwale and Zero).

(longer review than in the other thread)
During my 2nd and 3rd watch yesterday, I realised how well made the movie is. And contrary to so many with only one watch, I thought that Dunki indeed is a movie that deserves more than one watch.
My first impression (at the first watch) - concentrated on reading the subtitles to get the meanings of what was talked - had been a bit disturbed by the way the scenes followed...it had been like a beautiful blanket done with differently stitched scenes, like a patchwork blanket.
Knowing the story now, I could see (and highly enjoy) the wonderful intertwining of each part of the story and of the emotions/humour displayed...it was a real wow-effect to me...and my emotional reaction had been stronger, my feeling for the characters more intense.
The public around me (predominently Indian) reflected my own emotions with chuckles, laughter, loaded silence, clapping, cheering, moaning ...staying until the end of the last song during the end credits and then giving applause.
What a wonderfully narrated tale quite never leaving the bond the ensemble cast shared - with Manu, Balli and Buggu at the core, receiving Hardy and Sukhi as additions and then getting Geetu (Boman) when Sukhi had left - changing for the future into Hardy, Balli, Buggu.
What a heartwarming movie and what a smiling (and apt!) ending scene
I appreciated the different performances more, also Boman Irani's one got more attention...SRK's younger avatar made a lot of sense as initially, he came like an intruder into the close knit trimurti...but through Sukhi and his consideration for him he pulled the story forward...he gave a motivation beyond the economic one (SRK's rebellious mind!)...and the "joker"-theme made so much sense, too, as he would be the one who matured the most (quickly) - seen in the changing of his appearance.
