I started digging into Nutan after watching Bandini and then only realised what a wonderful body of work she has.She worked so many realistic social related movies.Sujata ,Bandini, Paying Guest, Seema, Khandan, Saudagar(I dont know how many have seen this one but I loved it)..I have enjoyed them all.

I think Nutan, Waheeda Rehman and Jaya Bhaduri were all very natural.Do watch Jaya Bhaduri’s movies also..she is the most underrated actress of her times.

Yeah, I thought this was just me but glad to see someone else who feels the same. I haven’t really seen much of his work maybe like 3 movies two of which I don’t even remember and few songs but yet I find myself drawn to him whatever little I saw of him. There’s something about his demeanor that I find very genuine, kind and gentle and whenever I see him I always want to see more. I ordered this book I found on Amazon just to find out more about his life and see if I can get to know him better from reading I can’t wait for it to come. I believe aside from him no one else from the yesteryear fascinated me until I saw Sujata and found myself spellbound by Nutan. I always liked Shashi Kapoor too but again I haven’t seen anything of his except the one movie both he and Sunil are in called Waqt or something. I always assumed old movies won’t be my thing but I was wrong 😂

I don’t know how and why I never watched her before. Anyways can anyone recommend me other good films of hers?? I tried Milan with Sunil Sir, again but I didn’t connect with it whereas Sujata blew me away in every way possible. Also, the songs were great especially Jalte hain jis kaliye 😭💙

Also, good Sunil or other actors movies from the golden era are welcomed. I’m not Indian so I never really thought anything of old movies but after this movie I realised I have been missing a lot 😢

Anyways please, recommend away.

Thanks in advance 💙

I guess I need to brush up on vintage Nutan. I only know late stage Nutan from Meri Jung, Karma, Naam. I always thought she was Rakhee before Rakhee was Rakhee - the classic mom that is.

You are a true movie lover who is not blinded by favoritism. 🙌

I have the same problem with RK. I don’t like his Chaplinesque acting but his movies are all gems, add to the he is my dad’s favorite. So I can say I watched almost all his movies, including his directorial work.

Haven’t watched much of GD except Pyaasa, that also I don’t remember much. Any special recommendations?

DK and DA are more entertaining than RK.

But one common entertaining factor is all the heroines were elegant, beautiful and the music outstanding, which are the main reasons why the movies from this era are a joy to watch.

@Red: Not always true. Sometimes I can be shallow. Case in point: The number of Shashi Kapoor- Nanda films I've watched ☺️😆

@Bold: Hell yeah! I couldn't agree more. I mean have you seen DK in Aan, Kohinoor and Azaad? He puts the likes of Errol Flynn to shame. DK for me is a complete actor.

RK was my dad's favorite too along with DK, and in my rebellious teen phase I resisted watching them both just cos they came recommended by him! 😆 (Teen Me was dumb like that 😆) But I grew up thankfully and now I can appreciate both these actors for what they can do, DK infinitely more.

GD: Pyaasa is his magnum opus. Or probably Kaagaz ke phool. But I like his light-hearted movies like Mr. & Mrs. 55 & Aar Paar. Also C.I.D produced by him is soo good. It's the result of a pact between DA and GD. GD had promised Dev he'd be the lead in his production after Dev gave him a break as director for two of his films- Baazi and Jaal.

Ahh the music! That's a whole other thing, isn't it? I can wax eloquent about this music for days!

Btw, if you want to talk Retro music, you should totally peek into the Music Corner forum!

If you're a Sunil Dutt fan you absolutely must watch

Mujhe Jeene do

Mera Saaya

Ek phool char kaante (this is a light-hearted rom-com but sooo fun!)

There are scores of others but these 3 ⭐️ & Sujata that you've already watched.

Waqt is pretty good for the serious amount of eye candy 😆

Huge fan of Nutan.

Watch ‘Soney ki Chidiya’, a lesser known movie of hers, it also stars Balraj Sahni.

One down and many to go…Seema is done. I’m going to try to not spoil anything even though I’m sure everyone has already seen it 😭

Nutan in yet another movie where she has a miserable life where her paternal uncle and aunt ill treat her. She works as a servant for them and other households to earn money never to see a penny of it. The difference between this character and Sujata even though Gauri is often mistreated by people around her when she finally breaks she turns into a total rebel which I just loved 🥰 She is no longer the innocent girl what’s done to her turned her into a complete rebel. She is crazy, temperamental and just completely out of control 😂 Lol, it’s unfortunate that the poor souls at the ashram are those destined to face her wrath. I loved her rebellious side even though it was misplaced at times. Opposite her when have Ashok who is kind, understanding and gentle but that has no affect on Gauri because by the time he comes along she’s already been broken and betrayed by everyone she knows so it’s not easy for her to trust or accept his kindness. Even though Ashok has no idea why she is the way she is he always willing to give her the benefit of the doubt and deal with her with understanding, empathy and compassion even when it’s hard to, what a gem of a man. His character is just so effing lovable 😭💙

After lots of insanity on her part Gauri not only starts becoming herself again (not before she beats Baanke Lal to her heart’s content 👏👏) She gets alone with everyone at Aashram, apologies for her behaviour and promises to do her very best with so much gratitude towards the only person who treated her well for the first time no wonder she ended up falling for him. He’s the only person that treated her like a human being. I got a little nervous when he asked her to marry his friend and she relentlessly agreed to do as he wanted but thank god for Murlidhar. I didn’t care for his character until the last minute when he protested against Ashok, I was like you tell them Murli 😂 he couldn’t knock some sense into his friend but got through to Gauri.

It was no Sujata (I think I’m spellbound 😭) but yet another gem I didn’t know existed. I enjoyed the movie throughly and both Nutan and Balraj were great their characters were endearing especially Ashok and their acting was top notch. I feel like I have seen Bajraj before but I can’t remember in what. Any chance he’s in a movie with Sunil Dutt?? The songs were great but I think “Humen bhi de do sahara” is my favorite. The scene in that song where she attempts to hide the coin with her feet broke my heart into tiny little pieces. Anyways thank you for recommending this gem Lizzie. I really enjoyed it. 💙💙💙

I’m sure I’m forgetting a lot because I didn’t give myself time to actually process the movie so I will update if I have something to add.

Wow, Kiffs thank you for that detailed review! I must confess it’s been a while since I watched Seema and I don’t recall it in clear detail, I guess I should rewatch.

One scene that is etched in my memory is Nutan singing ‘Manmohana’ in anger while hurling things at the window and breaking stuff 😆. That’s so well done. Her anger and frustration is captured really well. It helped that Nutan was a trained singer herself. In fact, Lata Mangeshkar has cited her as one female lead that voice syncs to her playback voice perfectly on screen. And she had given the example of Manmohana. How well her throat moves in sync to where the vocals would make her throat move if she were actually singing! That’s all thanks to her classical training.

Yep, Balraj Sahni plays Sunil Dutt’s dad in Waqt. He’s a phenomenal actor - he was one of my dad’s eternal favorites and I love how restrained her is even in exceptionally emotional moments.

For me, Tu pyar ka saagar hai is the stand out track in this movie. But I also love Kahan ja raha hai and Manmohana. Suno choti si gudiya ki is heartbreaking in its sadder version like you mentioned.

I can’t wait for you to watch the rest and tell us your opinions! ⭐️
