Fellow Sunil Dutt and Nutan fan here. Nutan was often portrayed as this tragic, martyr, sacrificing character carrying the troubles of the world. It was great fun to see her breaking free of that image with a bubbly character in Tere Ghar ke Samne with Dev Anand. It's great fun whenever she wrangles with Dev. Even the early parts of Paying Guest is good- though it devolves once the pair resolves their quarrel and the plot turns serious.

You absolutely have to watch Nutan's Saudagar where she plays a widow marrying a much younger Amitabh Bachchan who's out to scam her of her earnings to marry a much younger woman.

Nutan's son Mohnish Behl and grandaughter Pranutan are also solid actors. I'd recommend Pranutan's Notebook as it has two people falling in love without seeing each other. It's an old fashioned plot in this day and time. But the story is told with conviction and Pranutan proves that she has her grandmother's genes.

GUIDE is not streaming legally thanks to DA's useless nikamma nithalla chomu dharti ka bojh #%%$^ son but I have archive.org links that have its DVDrips.

Besides Kala Pani and Hum Dono, I'd recommend Solva Saal. It's an uber cute film. ❤️

Next would be Jewel Thief, Kala Bazar, Asli Naqli for now.

BTW, Lizzie, have you watched the Hollywood version of The Guide? It was filmed before the hindi version.

Jewel Thief for sure but I didn’t count flat-haired Dev movies 😃. Only poofy haired Dev 😀.

I’d also include Tere mere sapne in that case.

I haven’t watched the Hollywood version of Guide. Is it good?

Tere Mere Sapne is super underrated. I just wish it had Waheeda in place of Mumtaz. But then I have the same wish for Jewel Thief as well. 😆

The Guide could be a good curious watch because it takes you back to the first international crossover attempt by Dev Anand who collaborated with Nobel laureate Pearl Buck. Its screenplay was supposed to be followed for Hindi GUIDE as well but Vijay Anand rejected it. So, it gives good insights into the production and makes you appreciate Vijay Anand a lot more. The differences between both versions are striking.

Waheeda Rehman won best actress award at Chicago International Film Festival for her performance...though it was much inferior to her Hindi GUIDE performance.

Uff Jewel Thief! Tell me about it. I actually wanted Dev to walk off into the sunset with Tanuja and I normally love Vyjayanthimala! 😀Her character just didn’t do it for me in Jewel Thief. In TMS I didn’t mind Mumu. Thought Waheeda and Dev have a special chemistry that’s hard to replicate, I think Dev had so much charm that he managed to generate it with most of his female leads.

Since JT didn't have Waheeda, I didn't care who Vinay ended up with. 😆

WR once said that people expected her to star opposite Dev in JT. They would have made the songs so much better. ❤️

Indeed, he managed to create chemistry with most heroines with the exception of a few like that lizard woman in Prem Pujari. However, the kind of intensity Dev-Waheeda had (specially in GUIDE) is impossible to replicate. They had a very nice offscreen rapport as well. Dev went against three directors and replaced a fourth one to cast her in GUIDE. Her grief after his passing away was so palpable.

I like different actors for different reasons.

But Shammi and Dev are my go-tos. ☺️ Sunil Dutt I find eminently watchable.

As is Madhubala.

Other favorites are Waheeda, Meena Kumari and Vyjayanthimala.

Dilip Kumar is always a joy to watch- his movies not so much, though some of them are absolute gems.

Guru Dutt - I enjoy his movies more than his performances.

RK - I would count some of his movies as the best ever made but I do not enjoy his bumbling Chaplinesque persona. 😆 RK in Awara & Chori Chori was ⭐️

You are a true movie lover who is not blinded by favoritism. 🙌

I have the same problem with RK. I don’t like his Chaplinesque acting but his movies are all gems, add to the he is my dad’s favorite. So I can say I watched almost all his movies, including his directorial work.

Haven’t watched much of GD except Pyaasa, that also I don’t remember much. Any special recommendations?

DK and DA are more entertaining than RK.

But one common entertaining factor is all the heroines were elegant, beautiful and the music outstanding, which are the main reasons why the movies from this era are a joy to watch.
