The boy had burn marks on his body and had told teachers his dad beats him with his belt and threatens to send him back to India the next time he pees in his car. I have heard this from parents who knew this couple personally.

At the time, the parents had tried to explain it all away as cultural differences but I remember reading in several local Fb posts about how weird the parents were and all the complaints from their neighbours. The father in court even said his wife has some psychological issues. He had said that she not only beats the kids but even attacks him

I have the utmost respect for Norwegian laws and can confidently say that the entire narrative of this movie is false. Child laws in Scandinavia border on the harsh but there is no doubt that they are in place to protect children. The court was willing to give the custody to the kids uncle but there was infighting b/w the parents. The family has taken advantage of the situation knowing that Norway will never release any information about any case involving minors.

Maybe this movie is exaggerated and this case is being portrayed incorrectly, but Norwegian Child Protection services is not as noble as you are projecting them to be

The web is full of first hand horror stories of these agencies and how most of them are violating the laws and destroying families for their own benefit. And this is coming from Norwegian residents, not just immigrants

I didn't take it as an offence to Rani.

But I want to watch the film before comparing it with the KNOWN reality. (I didn't watch the trailer...and won't watch it).

I am speaking only of this particular case. The Norwegian residents you talk about are mostly those like me who come from other cultures and have taken up residence in the country. Immigrants become residents eventually but many still don't assimilate and this gives rise to the said cultural differences. And what possible benefit is there in destroying families as you have stated? Barnevernet literally means Child protection. Huge amounts of money is spent by the govt to protect children. Yes some laws are harsh and they should go easy in some cases but this particular case was not one of those.

That's just my opinion

Well, I'll read it AFTER having watched the film (yet thanks for posting 😊)

It's a sensible matter where personal experiences play an important role. I'm sure that the CWS doesn't want to harm children but to protect them but it is also possible that sometimes they go wrong or do more harm than good.

That is something that also happens with child protecting agencies in other countries...

la_Reine, it's not because of spoilers...it's to get my impression of the movie-story first to read that opinion/statement done because of the movie 😊

If I'll get back to Germany on time, I'll watch it in a theatre...if not, I've to wait for the streaming.

Edit: la_Reine, I misunderstood, I think...what I posted, is the thread where there was talk about what happened in Norway...the real life story on which the movie is based. (I thought it was on page 5 in the linked thread but you can see its mentioning on other pages, too.)

I thought you wrote about the article about the ambassador protesting.

I had said the same in some thread earlier, this case is grey not that black and white. It is damaging to camouflage and do wrong depictions.

I also have also lived in Europe working in a similar company as this case and one has to live there to understand the nuances and the differences between immigrants too from different nations and backgrounds and assimilation issues.

This family is well educated, upper class in india, the husband is a geophysicist working with a major mnc company, they are well versed in English, just like lot of Indian immigrants who migrated after IT boom. This is different from say uneducated/illegal immigrants etc. who know have no exposure

Yes, there may be several issues with child protection but this case is not that straightforward
