Because nobody cares about the new actors actresses. They don’t have acting skills or charm that the Khans and other old actors has. Neither they are serious about their work. They are more known for their personal life than their work. Jhanvi and Sara exposed themselves 5 years before making their debut. If we know them so much before their debut, then why would we go and watch their movies in theater? Also, social media and south industry had taken over Bollywood. When you can see so many things on a phone or laptop, then why waste money to see movies in a theater? Most people doesn’t know new actors actresses of this generation. Over the last 10 years, only Alia and Varun did well. Rest of them flopped so badly and most of them are wodden face. Why waste money on them when they can’t give entertainment?

Change in the tastes of audience due to digital era. People have more options than before. In 90s theatre were big source of entertainment for people.

Craze is what Salman, Aamir, HR had with MPK, QSQT, KNPH which were also hits. And they did it without cheap antics like removing towel.

A single person can't make a film hit. Was KNPH actually a hit? Saawariya was just a shit film anyways. That's why it flopped.. but there was a lot of excitement to see Ranbir. The towel antic just added to the curiosity people had.

KNPH was the biggest hit of that year FYI. Top grosser of 2000. Just as MPK was top grosser of 1989 and also an ATBB.

Of course a single person can make a film hit if he or she is amazing. KNPH is a totally ordinary film but it became super hit thanks to songs and Hrithik who became overnight sensation on day of its release and all magazines featured him on cover next month and he became most searched Indian online in 2000 itself beating Aishwarya Rai who held top spot earlier.

KNPH is one of rare films to be hit in January. Otherwise a dull month for BO. And HR was so successful that people said he would overtake Khans and he was instantly declared new superstar since Khan films except Mohabbatein did not do that well that year.

HR replaced Aamir no less in Coke ads. Coke renewed contract with Aamir only after Lagaan. Otherwise Hrithik was taken by Coke. Hrithik craze was both at BO and ad world, fan world, among kids and oldies alike.

Legit the greatest debut in last 25 years.

KNPH upon its release became maybe the sixth or seventh highest grossing film at the time. That’s a one of kind debut.

I remember the The Romantics that one word said by Aditya Chopra that the audience does not care abt who you are and where u come from what they care is what is being shown on-screen. Its the audience decision of whom they want & whom they do not. I hope the current gen understand this all their PR gimmicks will not work on theor audience its their work that speaks for themselves

I remember he became an overnight superstar. It was unbelievable. He was being constantly pitted against SRK after that point.

RESTRAINT.

Restraint is a regal / royal phenomenon. There was restraint back in those days. Actors became stars because there was less exposure of their offscreen personas. Social media and papparazi wasn't as common. The rare opportunities for exposure was still carried out in dignified interviews with the likes of someone like a Simi Garewal.

An Actor was known more for his work, than his offscreen persona and the other gossip he/she was involved in. If you wanna see them, you've to head to the threatres or rent out / buy classic ole VCDs and watch those films at home. There was an air of mystery about them, an intrigue factor.

They were so good at what they did, their craft, but they also felt so unreachable. Of a different league, a different galaxy. So they were stars indeed for a reason. That applies to even the female actors of that era.

Overexposure kills and cheapens things. Ranbir, Ranveer, Ishaan, Vicky - we known them more for their offscreen life and who they're dating and who they're not VERSUS for their work. No sense of restraint. They're commonplace. They just feel like you or me, except a little more privileged due to connections.

Srk himself admitted to succumbing to pressure and comparisons and feeling insecure k… and even worked in a Pepsi ad mocking hrithik.. there was a section where they showed papa roshan but apparently hrithik didn’t take too well to the rumors and said he’s ok with him being mocked but not his father.

he even joked at an award ceremony abt hrithik giving him nightmares or something…
