PS1 was just a costume drama about which only south Indians cared. So PS1 has no comparison to above movies. It was regional movie.
Brahmastra is a blockbuster, no doubt. But Karan did inflate the numbers. PS1 is miles ahead of Brahmastra in content, acting and characterization. Calling it a costume drama is ridiculous. It was fully intended to be a Tamil film. They cast all the top Tamil actors for the main roles(barring Aish). No Bollywood cameos, item numbers. It was a matter of pride for them to present a beloved classic to the Tamil audience -both in India and abroad. And the film did do well in Kerala.
What Brahmastra got right :
Massive promotions and got the right wing in its pocket with its claims to present Hindu mythology to the world in an Avengers style film catered particularly for a young audience.Excellent trailer and VFX.All the critics were excited and rooting for a Bollywood film to finally be 'The' blockbuster that the industry badly needed
Where Brahmastra failed:
Ayan was too inexperienced to handle such a massive project. He didn't know what to do with the massive stars handed over to him. The world had to be built up right from the basic building blocks. The writers failed to live up to the expectation. As always the love story overwhelmed the rest of the plot.
What PS1 got right
Full audience support from Tamils. There is no anti-Tamil movie brigade calling for the death of PS1. Experienced director who knew how to work within the budget and actually use the stars handed over to him. Readymade story with 3 dimensional characters completely at his service. He just had to decide what to pick and discard and what to change. Love story didn't take over the plot.
What PS1 got wrong
1.In an effort to be secretive and mysterious, PS1 didn't show it to the critics beforehand. With Vikram Vedha releasing next day, the critics postponed it to the next day. In that interval all those trashy youtubers with clickbait reviews posted negative reviews.
2.Then there was the online war between Tamil and Telugu fanboys.
3.PS1 is non-linear (even when a linear timeline is needed)and everything is not spoonfed to the audience. The audience get to know only as much as Vanthiyathevan the protagonist knows about these Royal siblings. He's a foreigner in Chola kingdom and doesn't know all the backstories or political groups.
4.Nobody enjoys being told that they are too unintelligent to appreciate a masterpiece.
