AFAIK it is supposed to mean South Bombay. Technically neither Bandra nor Juhu, where many Bollywood stars live, is 'South Bombay'. So SoBo is a fallacy really. I think just a copycat of the term SoCal. 😆

Additional context: Mumbai mein being "South" Mumbai is a relative and controversial topic. E.g. Juhu, which ReturnToHades categorically called Central Mumbai, can be considered South Mumbai by someone living in e.g. Andheri or further up north. Juhu resident will tell Andheri guy that he's too north to be in Mumbai, while a Dadar guy will tell the Juhu guy that actually YOU're too north to be in Mumbai. You get the gist... It's all contextual based on where you're located....

As podcasts and similar content is for global consumption, it makes financial sense to host them in English for wider audience reach. This primarily would factor into the advertising revenues they can rake in as opposed to pigeon holing themselves into Hindi or any specific Indian language.

That said, The new gen celebs like Jhanvi, Ananya, even the likes of Kylie ( who they try to copy) speak awful English. The new gen Desi celebs speak more Hinglish, and generally have poor command of either language and can barely express themselves concisely.

I think it’s primarily because they don’t aim to speak one language properly, they haven’t read core English/Hindi literature (like classics, or widely popular novels, think pieces) nor do they practice writing the said language.

that's more a reflection of the podcasts we might watch. But there is significant hindi content out there too in all areas one might be interested in.

also, even when we talk global consumption, the audience for the content put out by the BW characters is still primarily desi. People might live overseas yet they still watch hindi shows or follow hindi programs, more than the english ones, as is the case in this forum itself. Walk into a desi salon or desi dive and you'll see desis switched on to hindi channels. The labor class would be even more hindi speaking...

so i think the fact that these characters put out english content is more due to their inability to converse fluently in hindi, less because of any great marketing appeal of english. And that lack of fluency in hindi reflects in their hackneyed acting in Hindi films too..

Podcast is meant for public consumption so obviously they will speak in a language which has wide reach. If the podcast is in English it only is right that they converse with each other in that language.

Don't know about celebs but even in urban educated middle class converses mainly in English these days.

Way back we grew up in a bilingual background switching from native tongue to English depending upon the need.
