Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 and Drishyam 2 still didn't require big screen viewing despite having franchise value. Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 was also a completely different film with a new story and new lead actor.
But BB2 and D2 succeeded.
Brahmastra and RRR succeeded, but Shamshera, also a spectacle film, failed. Adipurush was laughed at so bad it had to be postponed.
It's not specifically spectacle that audience is looking for. It's not sequels. It's not about remakes. It's not about *mass* films. Neither BB2 nor Drishyam has the hero beating up 10 people or mistreating women.
It's about entertainment. Starts with writing and technical expertise. Then comes acting.
But Bollywood seems to have taken a vow not to sudhaar. They will continue to chase after some magic formula. KJo has declared it must be about spectacles, so they will chase after spectacles for now.
Or sequels.
Or remakes.
Or *mass* films as though rural audiences don't have intelligence enough to enjoy a good story.
Aamir declared OTT is creating problems. So they will blame OTT.
Bottomline is they will look at everything, blame everyone except themselves.
They have good writers. Hire them and give them the leeway to write stories which appeal to people outside SoBo. Hire directors who have experience outside the film fraternity.
But I'm not holding my breath.
There is a difference between 'all sequels and big budget entertainers work' and 'films that work are either sequels or big budget entertainers'Originally posted by: PangaNaLe

This belongs where
we talking OTT movies this song belongs to that
I don't think it's only a about big spectacle, otherwise Balck Adam or Strange World wouldn't have lost millions and movies like Everything everywhere.., Nope, Ticket to Paradise become success.
I think it's about entertainment quotient. Keep the entertainment value intact, audience definitely pay to watch. Besides big budgeted movies are always at risk of failure.
Movies that do not entertain will not do well and entertainment does not mean only comedy and masala. Genre is immaterial, movie has to hold the audience. Recent case-in-point TKF and Drishyam2.
It will take its time for the Hindi filmindustry to adjust to the change that has occurred during the pandemic and because of the numerous streaming platforms.
I think, it is very difficult to predict the fate of a theatrical release (if you're not prone to cheat with the numbers) regardless the quality of the movie or the subject or the entertainment quotient... e.g. Bhediya seems to be a decent entertaining movie with an interesting plot but it is in the theatres at the same time with a rather unbeatable Drishyam2 (with repeat watching value despite knowing the plot).
