Shahrukh Khan one of the most popular and successful male leads, no doubt about it.
Yet some are of the view that he was unable to maintain that high standards of raw genuine performances he once showed at the start and middle of his career with unconventional roles, anti hero characters and out of the box concepts which were huge hits as well at the box office. And eventually went into a trap of formula/mediocrity out of which is hard to come out, even till now.
If you ask me, I come to the conclusion based on following:
* The huge success of DDLJ made him rethink not doing experimental films like KHKN and gray shades.
* He than eventually went to do similar form of romantic films that followed the path of DDLJ, the raw energy was missing, it seemed all pre planned with a formula to succeed at boxoffice, it worked commercially but somehow that artist inside Shahrukh either died down or became vague over the years.
* Its not just about very unconventional roles, but even in a film like DEEWANA which was his movie debut, he was something else, a unique performer with so much potential,, somehow that was missing even in films like CDI, that madness and that genuine-vibe of an exceptional performer.
* He shines the most in rugged and dark roles. Not just Darr, baazigar, anjaan raam jaane etc from 90s but also Don series and Raees later from his career are the shining examples.
What is your take, what are the factors you think were involved.
