Do you like what the audience likes?

Most of the times, it does not make sense to me how certain films make money. It used to happen more so in 2000-2019 , post pandemic things are better but still we have had undeserving hits like Pushpa and Bhool Bhulaiya. I mean , the amount of money they made is not directly proportional to the content in these films but still they exist unabashedly and they did make money.

Also, witnessing the social media shower their love on some hawa ka stars like Shehnaz Gill, Tejaswi Prakash Karan Kundra etc...Do you follow them?

The Recent KWK episodes also proved that the audiences do not like the favoured nepo kids like Alia and Janvi...

I wanted to understand whether there's a disconnect between what the audience really like and us who are on social media forums?

Great observation 👍🏼

I would like to think that I am not among the masses. It's been years I have watched Bollywood or any other films. I watched it only after checking reviews etc.when all the hype is slowed down. But there are people who are religiously following each and every movie. These are educated people I am talking about but they find it too hard to read subtitles so they won't even watch Hollywood until it's Hindi dubbed. So all they have is regional content and films. However repetitive or cliched the movie or serial is they will watch it coz they don't have anything else for their entertainment.

The reason for the massive following of people like Shehnaz and Tejaswi is stanning culture. Just like Salman saying I won't host next year BB and keep hosting it anyway, people too claim they won't watch but watch it anyway coz it's the talk of the town. And they pick their fav and wage internet war over the other people's pick. More than liking it's more about hyping them up.

Pushpa n bhoolbhulaiya was ok as one time watch I liked pushpa more n bhoolbhulaiya was kinda more boring. Ppl have to do pass their time n do outing with family, friends or GF/BF. Very few movies r those which r at least tolerable. So audience pick those ones.

I don't like these social media stars n media just keeps hyping them n showing them. And Audience talks what they r shown hence these become talked about celebrities n hence consider themselves as stars though r annoying at another level. Social media influencers r also in same category without doing anything relevant they r earning n becoming celeb. Urfi javed is another example of this just wearing skimpy n vulgar dressing she is made a known face but has no work behind her.

I agree with favoured nepo kid thing. Audience doesn't hate nepo kids they hate blatant favouritism n shoving down the unlikeable down audience's throat.

It's a marketing gimmick keep promoting one thing so much that it gets in ppl mind all the time.

I don't think the audience are a homogenous, monolith, there is a big variation between audiences in India and abroad

There was a phase post 2000 (when srk, chopra movies all hit big) when NRI audience was huge and they were the main market with multiplex audience in big cities in India which is why combined with the nepotism factor where all stars came from priveleged sobo type backgrounds movies became very elite (the big budget ones).

they lost the small town and single screen audience who shifted to south films onine, you tube and all these sm stars whom we think tacky connect to them. though sm stars will keep changing quickly.

also mobile access, cheap data has changed everything, which means they can access everything from hw to korean movies and now OTT so they are quite aware

pushpa connected to the single screen audience because irrespective of whether we like it or not it depicts a small town world and a struggle which is authentic, whether we like that world or not it exists.

the elite in india and abroad have moved to OTT and they get their nostalgia fix from shows like panchayat

this is also the reason most films have failed, everybody has alternatives. there is a generational shift in India. the era of khans is over and there is no new superstar because all these new actors take 10 yrs to make 2 movies and have no connect with the small town audience as fans

I feel the quality will go up because people have alternatives, the film industry is still grappling with the change

In my opinion, if a movie promises a good theatre experience, audiences will pay to see it there. Otherwise, OTT platforms are available.

Pushpa, KGF 2, and other films didn't have particularly strong writing or content, but they were well made and gave audiences a pleasant theatre experience. In addition, the majority of viewers still enjoy hero worship movies, no wonder they did great at BO 😆.

With RE: nepo kids, I don't believe that liking or disliking any actor is typically a large factor in deciding whether or not to watch a movie, unless it's someone like Kangana who is good actor but whose overall personality and behaviour puts off the public.

Following the SSR incident, people are condemning Star Kids and Kjo left and right, yet they will still watch their work if it has good content. 😆

Viewers in general don't care that much, they will watch a movie if the hype around it is good for 2-3 hours of entertainment and a distraction from real-life issues. This is different from people on social media forums who analyse and critique movies and stars.

Watching movies in theatres is all about experience and less about actor or theme .

Honestly I don't really judge their actual popularity with social media figures/followers etc. Earlier I used to take everything on face value but after getting to know a little about PR/bots and also how easily these things can be bought, I don't even know what to believe anymore 😆 Celebs obviously have genuine fans as well, but in today's SM era, everything is hyped and money can almost buy anything. You talk about some small celebs in your circle jinhe you see on social media har wakt and you would be surprised that a lot of people don't even know they exist.
