I can comment on films only, so will do that. I associate a great deal of importance to theater viewing experience. A decently made commercial movie makes for a great movie viewing experience when you are watching it in theater, with the crowd, with all the sound, cheers, claps and whistles. The same movie when watched without the theatrical experience will seem average , at best. When people watch such movies online or on OTT platform, these things will feel overrated and success questionable. When movies made for the masses are watched with the masses, the experience is elevated. Even for movies that are not typically houseful material, even there the theatrical experience becomes wholesome when the movie is decently made, because you are transported to the world with minimum distractions.
Can't comment on social media stars, because I'm not the audience they cater too. Though I have to say that when I see young kids so digitally hooked to so many things dumb and redundant, it feels pretty stupid. Even their opinions are mostly lifted/prompted by sites like twitter.
