I read two different articles in that one said budget is 180 crores and it need minimum 200 crores to call a hit..

If the above division is true then it need 115 or 120 crores to call it a hit.

OK, thanks. I’m still confused. I thought the minimum had to be double the distribution fee because it gets divided 50/50 between distributors and producers. So movie is sold for 90. Makes 180. Distributors get their 90 and break even. Movie makes 250. Distributors get 125 and make 35cr profit. But I guess not

Theatres shut down when 83 released and there was so much fear about getting covid, Gangubai has released when all theatres are open and there is much less fear about getting covid, yet still people are comparing other movies box office to 83

83 wouldn’t have worked even if all the theatres were wide open. That movie looked like a 5 hour long documentary on watching paint dry.

I disagree, 83 would have done alot better if it was released during another time of the year such as in the summer, the movie got great reviews and WOM from those that were able to watch it. Unfortunately the movie released at a time when the pandemic was at its peak again, all of the Delhi theatres were shut along with many other cities, those that weren't shut had 50% occupancy, and alot of people were scared of getting covid so didn't go

83 was one of the highest grossing overseas last year, it earned more overseas than sooryavanshi did, that is becuase all of the theatres were open overseas and there were less restrictions

And that's why I never bothered with 83. I can't stand Deepika but still gave Gehraaiyan a shot. It's another thing that I gave up after the first fifteen minutes but the fact that I gave it a try counts for something cuz 83 didn't even manage that.

It really did look like a long, elaborate skit of the real thing ..... and I'm sure people would rather just rewatch the actual match when they wanna reminisce over it.

SLB is a brand and Kabir Khan is not. Although Ranveer's box office pull is overrated and got exposed .

I assume that producer already got his 90 crores it is distributors who will lose money if movie didnot go well.. they need to recover 90 crores and top of that is their profit. Producer wonot get share in disturbtor profits unless they had some agreement. (As per my knowledge, i can be wrong also)

No pandemic. People are going about their lives as if covid never existed so it js expected that they'll watch movies too now. It wasn't the case during 83 release

Gangubai Kathiawadi opening is 9-10 Crores approx.

The main crowd pullers of 83 were Ranveer and Kapil Dev, whose fans were most likely to check out the movie on first day. Along with cricket enthusiasts and people who were impressed by the trailer and interested in the story.

Gangubai's main crowd pullers are Alia and SLB, in place of Ranveer and Kapil Dev. The movie's subject is related to brothels and prostitutes which likely kept family audience away.

83 on the other hand was a completely family friendly film. It released on 24th December, one day before Christmas so a partial holiday. Gangubai didn't have any festival advantage, released on complete non-holiday.

Still the opening difference is only 1 or 2 Crores. 83 was hyped as a big massy event film, was supposed to be a Blockbuster. While Gangubai was promoted as a content driven film only made for multiplex audience.

Both films released during the pandemic, and no don't use Omicron as an excuse. Because Pushpa only in Hindi version did more business than 83 in later weeks despite releasing one week early.

If you're going to give all credit to SLB for Gangubai's opening, do remember that 3 out of 5 Hits Ranveer has in his filmography is from SLB only.

The circumstances that both the movies released in, the other movies that were there in competition etc should also factored in if you are going to compare two movies.

A better comparison is Ram Leela which was also a movie by SLB. Ranveer was just starting. SLB was down with failures. DP was the only crowd puller there.

Ram leela was not released during pandemic with 50% occupancy so you cannot compare them . 83 and gangubai now that is comparable
