Lata has always sounded more mature than Alka Yagnik and Kavita Krishnamurthy. It was noticeable earlier also. But perhaps people focused less because Alka, Kavita, Anuradha, Sadhana Sargam etc debuted in 80s when Lata was still going very strong and singing for main leads. So was Asha.

So they may have sounded more like contemporaries than seniors and juniors.

Though Alka slowly began to be preferred more to sing for younger girls like Neelam, Ayesha, Sonam, Manisha, Juhi, Madhuri, Raveena, Karishma in most films (barring Rajshri and YRF banners).

Subhash Ghai for eg had Lata sing for Madhuri in Ram Lakhan but chose Alka for Khalnayak. Indra Kumar took Anuradha Paudwal in Dil and Beta.

With Shreya and Sunidhi, the age and generation gap as well as style of music and age of actors had clearly changed which made singers sound more aged. Shreya's voice was so youthful and she started when she was just 17, which made even Alka, Kavita, Anuradha sound older.

Shreya and Sunidhi began to suit younger actors much better.

Anyway Sunidhi can sing new age kind of songs and taking her name here is not relevant as Lata never sang kind of songs Sunidhi does. Sunidhi has totally different style and genre. Sunidhi's voice suits contemporary music style way more. So no comparisons here.

Yes Sunidhi has a different style but imo it was with her that the shift towards younger female singers started. Before that Bollywood did not give new singers much opportunities. Like I can see Alka Yagnik singing Bhumro but Sunidhi sung that song because the producer wanted a younger voice. It's not relevant to Lata ofcourse but for Alka, Anuradha and Kavita it is because they were competing with two 17 year olds.

Younger voices often make actor seem younger onscreen as well. This is why producers began to choose Sonu Nigam to sing for Khans in 2000s and slowly began to phase out Udit, Sanu and chose Shreya, Sunidhi, Monali for actresses. Probably Sunidhi was chosen to sing for Kajol in Fanaa because she was a young, fresh, more upcoming voice compared to say, Alka.

I think Singer Decision making for actor has never been connected to whether suiting actor or not, early 90 was the era for kumar sanu he was popular so he was singing every song despite of whatever the actor .... 2000 was the peak of sonu nigam popularity so he was used more fortunately sonu voice e suited every actor of 90s generation back in days be it deols or kumar or khan's or hititk, govinda etc.... 2013 was the peak of arijit popularity so he was used for actors he didn't even suited like the khan's or kumar....

Dhoom was a game changer. A new composer Pritam a different kind of movie and music and the whole album had young talent except Abhijeet. The success of the movie and music was unexpected,it was a phenomenon. Bollywood music and movies changed after this.

This is also true but it coincides with youth factor too.

Sonu was not only younger but also more popular with younger generation.

So he began to be chosen for Khans and Hrithik, Bobby etc.

Suitability is also a factor or was there at some point. For eg, Kishore Kumar was chosen the most to sing for Amitabh Bachchan because voices of other singers seemed less fitting or believable for Amitabh due to his baritone. Rafi saab has sung less for Amitabh and more for others like Dharmendra, Rishi, Vinod Khanna. Kishore Kumar himself also used to sing in deeper voice and changed his voice as per actors he used to sing for. He sang differently for Dev Anand, Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan etc. Dev Anand used to appreciate his quality of changing style of singing and voice as per actors he sang for.

Mukesh was a legend but he began to get very less work after 1975 because style of films changed and his style of singing, his voice was less suited for commercial films of that era and he began to be used more for art films.

Popularity is due to suitability as well and more relatability for younger audience.

Shreya is chosen not only for her voice but also because she does suit younger actresses better. Same goes for Sunidhi as she also suits the different kind of songs better. I doubt Alka, Anuradha or Kavita could have sung Deedar de Deedar de song from Dus the way Sunidhi did. That is not Shreya's type either. For all strong, fast paced or aggressive songs, Sunidhi suits better than any other female singer out there. That is why she was chosen to sing songs for Mardaani also.

Suitability for genre, film, actor also determine selection of singer besides their market value and popularity.

I think suitability was a reason why Atif was never chosen to sing for Khans despite his songs topping charts from 2005.

In early 90s Vinod Rathod was very popular, he sang for SRK, Saif, Sanjay, Anil but not for Aamir because his voice was considered mature for Aamir who looked a bit too young, school boyish then and chose Udit Narayan to sing for him as his voice suited his boyish persona.

Vinod Rathod was an amazing singer and superhit till mid 90s but phased out of industry soon despite his voice being popular for TV show title tracks till 2000s. He sang only for Sanjay Dutt in Munnabhai series. Perhaps because he was considered a mature voice.

Arijit's voice suits ARK, Ranbir and nowadays he is able to sing light hearted songs also. He will go on as long as people find his voice believable and suitable for genres and actors.

Vishal Shekhar, Salim Suleiman, Shankar Ehsaan Loy also changed the game along with Pritam. Dus had totally different, unique music.

Total change from Jatin Lalit and Annu Malik style.

AR Rahman also brought change with Rangeela and more specifically RDB.

Deedar de was a power packed fast paced song compared to Jaanleva. Sunidhi pulled it off marvellously.

It is her major hit after Mast Mahaul song from Fiza and songs of Mast.

Sunidhi also pulls off those Hinglish songs like Move on Move on song from TWMR, very well.

Kavita is trained in classical tradition so she often sounds soft. Sunidhi can pull off aggressive, unhinged style songs better. She can sound ruthless warrior type if she wants and shun any softness. A quality very few singers (especially female ones) have.
