He understood the question very well, but he tried to act smart and dodge the question, but unfortunately for him the journalist was very persistent (possibly because he made the journalist feel like the question was silly, which it was obviously not).
Truth is films with Abhishek as the male lead were not bankable anymore, which is why he stopped getting them. So he started acting as a second lead with superstars and getting those hits finally.
This realization must be a bitter pill for him to swallow, which is why he denies it and refuses to acknowledge and says "size of the role does not matter". Oh really, then why did 90% of the films in your first decade as an actor have you playing "the hero"? Why did you rarely play supporting roles except in big films?
The better answer would have been for him to humbly acknowledge that "The reason you do not see me as main lead anymore is because my films do not run where I play the hero. So by attaching myself with established heroes, I am able to do successful films. Therefore, you are likely to see me do films like this going forward."
But that requires grace and humility. Abhishek is good at pretending to have those things, but deep down his arrogant and does not like to admit failure.
To quote a certain KJo-created character: "MINUSSSSS"
Like I said in the other thread, Abhishek's starting issue was Hrithik Roshan eclipsing him with "Kaho Na... Pyaar Hai" and its success. Now, Hrithik has had his shares of ups and downs, and Abhishek had a successful string in the mid-2000s, but the whole issue with Agneepath put this discussion to bed... if it wasn't already settled by the juxtaposition of the two with Dhoom 2.
Why is this relevant? Because the comparison of them is stark. Unlike Hrithik, who took his share of pile-ons and criticism and responded constructively and with hard work, Abhishek has not worked hard enough to address his issues, adapt, and improve. This video is a great example of how he behaves when called out---he just doesn't handle criticism well.

@Bold - That is such a good point. Abhishek pretends to be humble, but he isn't. The arrogance just seeped through the cracks in him.
It takes some bit of emotional intelligence to handle such kinda tough and tacky question. I feel Abhishek could have stopped persistently challenging the reporter, after his first two lines of response. But no, he felt for some reason that he wanted to make the reporter look stupid and ended up looking cringeworthily stupid himself.
It was embarassing when Akshay, Ritesh and others felt embarassed and tried to distract Abhishek or get him to politely stop responding. But Abhishek was like breaking the khulhadi with the number of times he was hitting that on his feet. No the feet didn't break but the khulhadi did.

True that. Had he been more gracious or taken the question in a sporting way, my respect for him would have increased.
How hard is to say, 'I would love to work as a solo lead in projects. If I find a good script coming my way, you'll surely hear from me on that'. Just a two liner and keep it moving!
