He understood the question very well, but he tried to act smart and dodge the question, but unfortunately for him the journalist was very persistent (possibly because he made the journalist feel like the question was silly, which it was obviously not).
Truth is films with Abhishek as the male lead were not bankable anymore, which is why he stopped getting them. So he started acting as a second lead with superstars and getting those hits finally.
This realization must be a bitter pill for him to swallow, which is why he denies it and refuses to acknowledge and says "size of the role does not matter". Oh really, then why did 90% of the films in your first decade as an actor have you playing "the hero"? Why did you rarely play supporting roles except in big films?
The better answer would have been for him to humbly acknowledge that "The reason you do not see me as main lead anymore is because my films do not run where I play the hero. So by attaching myself with established heroes, I am able to do successful films. Therefore, you are likely to see me do films like this going forward."
But that requires grace and humility. Abhishek is good at pretending to have those things, but deep down his arrogant and does not like to admit failure.
