Yes she wasn't ideal but the other options were literally just Priyanka (who was already playing Kashibai and wouldn't be right for the part anyway), Sonam (who wouldn't look the part and can't act for shit ) and Katrina (who is perfect for the role in terms of looks but not the best actress either), so SLB virtually had no choice...

This type of thing really does make you realise how much the standards have gone down in BW when it comes to actors 🤔

Umm.... I hate how much they whitewashed DP to the point you cannot even recognise her in that movie. But I don't think the whitewashing was aimed at making her more "conventionally beautiful".

Mastaani's mother Ruhani Bai was Persian & it is considered that Mastaani inherited a good lot of that Persian looks from her mother. This is how an artist's impression of the real Mastaani looks like

She looks like a fair skinned lady. DP was whitewashed to make her look somewhat like this.

SLB kept her original skin colour in Padmavaat & I think she looked gorgeous in that movie too.

I agree that Sonam would have made a beautiful Mastaani.

But Katrina? Katrina's features look very European imo. She would have looked weirder than DP as Mastaani. I can't even imagine her in those long anarkalis, dupatta over the head & all pearls jwellery🤓

As much as its true. Deepika had the next best face to be Mastani first being Aishwarya within the era SLB wanted to make the movie.

Priyanka did overshdow but, her character had more depth and it did not help that Bajirao completely ignored Kashi while being lovelorn with Mastani.He did not seem happy that Kashi was pregnant...Hell broke loose in Maratha kingdom and the biggest problem for a warrior like Bajirao was Mastani's rights and acceptance. There is no real reason for Mastani to be so servile to Bajirao's family ...she is supposed to be this warrior princess. Ofcourse she is woman from her times...so how can she gain acceptance of people of those times when Bajirao-Mastani did not bother with it to start with when they got together.

Audience just could not see the point in their love story. All this while Priyanka is doing a great job of being neglected and hurt wife. And we have Mastani who is unmoved by anything except how she is even willing to be even a kept woman and Bajirao striving for their legitamacy while not caring for his family, wife, kids...Mughals attacking and what not.

Basically, both Bajirao and Mastani...esp Mastani came accross as completely insensitive people...its hard to understand and root for their love while you see how Kashi openly called them out.

Aneways, Deepika was definetly good in the action sequence where she tries to escape with her kid when a Hit squad strikes them.

Bold : Actually 'No' Deepika is better looking on and off screen than Priyanka. Priyanka is pretty but, truth be told Deepika is pretttier.

I feel... If Rani - Aishwarya were cast(in their time) the result would have been similar.

Tbh I always thought that Katrina looked way more desi than white, like if someone told me she's fully Indian I wouldn't bat an eye... Kat looks either North Indian or Middle Eastern to me, I feel would make her just right looks-wise to play Mastani... it's her acting that made her out of question imo lol

PC was undeniably really good as Kashibai, but the characterisation played a large part in everyone liking her better than Deepika in this film...

Bajirao and Mastani both seemed selfish individuals who cared about no one but each other, and their love story seemed impossible to root for....

On the other hand Kashibai was portrayed as a much better person who despite being wronged actually cared for others...

And Deepika is a lot prettier than Priyanka too, lol

Okay.... so that was my opinion. 😆 I feel if anyone else other than Deepu could have filled the shoes of Mastani, in terms of looks, it was Sonam. Looks wise Sonam is very beautiful. She looked breathtaking in Sawariya....a re-creation of that would have looked good for Mastaani I guess.

On Katrina : I don't know😆 She looks very European to me. Maybe her accent is also a bit responsible for that.

She is beautiful no doubt, but she doesn't look her best in traditional clothes imo.

Honestly speaking I didn't even realise when & how Bajirao fell for Mastaani 😆 It was totally presented as Mastaani seducing him & him just getting convinced 🤔

Heck, I didn't even understand when exactly Mastani fell for Bajirao? It's like her friend just brainwashed her into believing that she was looking sooooo good in Bajirao's arms when he was carrying the unconscious & wounded her and she suddenly started behaving all coy & blushy around him 🤦🏻 Like seriously?

The so called epic love story looked like a lust-story of 2 brainless people. No wonder Kashibai got all the sympathies & Priyanka walked away with all the accolades😆
