Aishwarya looks breathtaking in almost all of her songs. Even in Taal’s title song with minimal makeup in the rain and bushy hair - she looked wow

She usually fails in “in person” events but her songs are magical. I get sad everytime I watch them because none of the current actresses have that beauty or charm

There is absolutely no doubt about her made for camera face!! She is one of the most beautiful women on camera. When she is on the screen, your eyes never leave her.

The unfortunate part is all these women who are camera friendly are assumed to be good actresses, which is so sad. What’s worse is that she never bothered to train herself either, acting is a skill. It’s sad that she belonged to a generation where looks were enough for you to get movies.

Most of that generation were happy doing movies, getting adverts, making the dough. They could not care less about building their skills.

Tabu is probably the only mainstream actress of that generation who worked on herself, who developed a certain stillness in her craft. No one else has done it.

Wish there were other platforms for women like her in our country, a Cindy Crawford enjoys certain gravitas, whereas Rai will be reduced to a bachan bahu and good looking bad actress as her legacy.

@Bold: So going to acting school is the only way to train one to be an actor? Hands-on experiential learning, which she got working with stalwarts such as Mani Ratnam, Sanjay Bhansali, Rituparno Ghosh, etc. can never be compared with attending an acting school.

If Aishwarya were to not care about skills, she wouldn't repeatedly work with the aforementioned filmmakers again and again. And on the contrary, she has done very few out and out commercial films which are made for the sole purpose of setting the cash registers ringing.

She did work on her craft, as there is a marked difference between her first film and how she blossomed into a good actor.

Tabu is not a good example to give here. She is actually one of the most naturally gifted, instinctive actors out there, and she is admittedly lazy and doesn't spend any time in preparing for her roles.

I didn’t say acting school at all, I meant training or developing her craft- by doing better movies, or even having a wider range. I don’t think anyone can deny her repertoire is limited, and that makes her a limited actress. I think we like to remember her for Mani Ratnam and Ghosh movies, but she has acted with Mani in 2/3 movies and with Ghosh in 1/2 and she has acted in total of maybe 50 movies.
None of the movies have been lauded for her acting prowess. What I am trying to say, she has no acting talent. These movie makers had her in their movies because she is extremely good looking, there is absolutely no two ways about it. And maybe, she must have sought them out, to probably build her craft, who knows? But there was a lack of consistency for sure.

The reason I said Tabu was not to compare both of them, but to actually point out that it’s unfortunate that actresses of her generation just didn’t have access to the range, or the inclination as such, because they were praised for their looks and those got them to make enough dough. Tabu is by far the only one who seems to have held herself to standards and demands by her craft. I don’t know about self proclaimed anything, but I am commenting purely based on acting that I see/connect with/enjoy.

The personality I was comparing her with is Cindy Crawford because to me Aishwariya could have become that, but unfortunately we don’t have those kind of platforms in India, yet. I don’t think I would Rai an actress at all, she is beautiful by birth, a celebrity by choice and an actress by opportunity.

Tbh, I should not have brought up acting at all, because in all fairness this post was about her beauty, so my apologies to the post maker.

@Bold: You contradict yourself here, because earlier you said "What’s worse is that she never bothered to train herself either," and now you're saying she sought opportunities with great directors to build her craft. Which one is it. smiley36

She was definitely lauded for quite a few movies, even those she did with makers other than Ratnam, SLB or Ghosh, such as Jodhaa Akbar, Provoked, Kandukondain Kandukondain, Jeans, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Khakee, to name a few.

Anyway, acting is indeed a subjective opinion. Saying makers like Ratnam and Ghosh worked with Ash because of her looks is taking it far though. I mean, the industry is filled with pretty faces. Their choice of actresses for their other films is also unique, they do not necessarily cast the most popular or incredibly beautiful actress; for example, they never worked with a Katrina Kaif or the likes. In fact, these are some of the most prolific directors Indian cinema has known, and they are definitely not superficial enough to cast an actress who cannot act just because she apparently looks great. That's an insult to their sensibilities as filmmakers IMO.

She is definitely a decent actress. She expresses very well and has done a competent job in many movies. Of course she isn't without flaws. But the discussion here was about how she isn't serious about her craft, when anyone who even briefly studied her career can attest otherwise; there is a marked improvement in her abilities. It's hard to miss.

That’s why I said, who knows? I am going by what I see and connect with, not by anything else. her acting does not connect with me at all. In fact, I am going a step further and saying she has no craft. End of the day, who am I to insult her? It’s an opinion and like you mentioned subjective.
I think we are going round and round for no reason.

Like I said, the post is about her looks and we should leave it at that.
Thanks for indulging.

I knew it...God can't make anyone so perfect....I see that her left ear lobe is slightly bigger than her right one...maybe one tenth of a millimeter....so Aish is not perfect....like everyone says😎

Not at all interested to convince you regarding her acting skills since it's subjective, but you made sweeping statements like "she never bothered to work on her craft" or "she wasn't lauded for her films", which didn't quite add up if you bothered to do a bit of research on her work and the reception it received.

The post may be about her looks but there is no restriction on discussing other aspects of her. You started the discussion so I am merely following up. It's up to you if you want to drop it. 😃
