Word. Maya was hugely popular on the internet. But online popularity barely makes anything iconic. Iconic is something that's widely known, acknowledged, and distinctive...something that stands the test of time and influences the medium it's a part of.

The term is used very loosely these days. Even MLs of flop shows that fizzled within 200 episodes are labelled iconic. 😆
