Gadar(2001): A problematic movie?

Gadar today would appear extremely jingoistic and problematic for its portrayal of the people of the neighboring nation. Back in 2001, all the elements of flag-weaving sentimentality worked in its favour. Anil Sharma’s cinema was never known for realism or restraint, soberness or subtlety; he knew how to correctly create OTT potboilers with immense help from canvas and clichéd characters. And Gadar was one of them, arguably one of the biggest blockbusters of Hindi Cinema.

Do you guys feel such jingoistic movies are problematic?

For me, Gadar holds a special place in my heart. I love Tara Singh and Sakeena. Of course, jingoism is problematic but the film was so much more. So, I wouldn't call the film problematic. A small part of the film was problematic.

So a movie where the protagonist says Pakistan Zinda Baad is jingoistic?

no seriously, logo ko kiya chahiye we don't call out the cunningly of Pakistani authorities, amaan aur asha ki jhooti chutiya baatain karte rahe, aur woh peeche se maarte rahe?

Sorry but this , "oh don't say anything against Pakistan" attitude is silly.

IMO the movie isn't to be taken seriously. It was more fantasy & unbelievable more than anything.

If I had to watch a movie on partition, I'd watch Pinjar.

How was the movie jingoistic?

It showed a love story between an Indian Sikh and a Muslim Pakistani.

It showed bad apples from both sides of the border.

The first few scenes in the movie showed how Indians were mercilessly slaughtering Muslims like cattle, and it wasn't shown in good light.

Sunny Deol fought his own people to save a Muslim girl who were out for her blood.

It actually promoted peace between both nations.

It should have stayed faithful to the original story. The distortion made it look unbelievable

If we think that we are better than Pakistanis then we should act like a better person, and a better person always forgives and forgets.

I know it's difficult, but there's no point in holding grudges and hating them only because they hate us. We can win them only with love, not hate.

Hmmm..... I think the film balanced everything Very well. Ofcourse, it’s jingoistic and OTT at times, but , it also balanced and didn’t go overboard on blaming all the ills on the non-Hindus. It showed how both Hindus and Muslims got swept up in the hatred and both were hurt in the process.

As for the Pakistan angle, well, most part of it is the reality. They have too much hate for India and the Indians, (#not all Pakistanis) , which they were not able to tone it down over the years.

It was also interesting how they have shown the plight of upper class Muslim women in Pakistan. The women in Amrish puri household are convent educated, speak English , but still have no freedom to make any choices. I’m not singling our Muslims here. Every religion, with no exceptions, tries to to subjugate and control its women .

Koi gudda guddi ka khel nahi hai.. we have lost blood and we are continuously losing blood. Its easier for you to say forgive and forget. What about families who are losing their jawaan because of Pakistan? Can you tell this to our families to not hold grudge? Is Pakistan even apologetic of its actions? Terrorists are openly living there with state support. They continuously sending militants across border... While India is trying to progress ahead we are from time to time anchored down by oh so lovely neighbors.
