Don't you think he provoked her?
I agree that she is wrong in taunting him by calling herself "man of the house." But I can see her anger in context. She just made a career sacrifice for her family and was just trying to share her experience with her spouse but gets castigated by her husband. He also takes out his anger on their son. In addition to Dev's behavior - I am sure as a woman she's exhausted to hear people question why she places career above family - a question men rarely get asked.
People say all kinds of mean things when hurt and provoked. While this does not justify her actions or make it right - I think many people in her position would have reacted similarly. I think most of us would react very poorly if our significant other was so bitter and unsupportive.
Dev lost his walking abilities, his career etc after the accident and god knows how much chronic pain he had. People can become bitter just by having disabilities and chronic pain. Does that justify his asshole persona? Nope. But Rhea wasnt a dood ki dhuli either; if my husband made me feel like I wasnt a woman enough and constantly rubbing his successful career into my face and ehsaan jataana behavior then I wouldnt be the nicest person either.
Sidebar: I hate terms like 'man of the house' and traditional expectations of what mothers/fathers must do in relationships.
Every family has financial supporters and homemakers. The two parents mutually decide who does what, how, and how much.

Exactly. I do have empathy for Dev. It is not easy to deal with your life and future unraveling due to one injury. That is why I do believe he needs some serious therapy to come to terms with his condition. Unless he stops being angry about his fate - he is not going to be a good partner to anyone. Nor will he be a good father.
I interpreted Rhea's belittling as a knee jerk reaction to her husband's bitterness. Injury -> Dev gets bitter -> Rhea reacts -> Dev gets reacts with more anger and resent -> Rhea gets more snarky -> Two people trapped in a cycle of toxicity.
Nope i don't think so they would still be together.. while they were married it was fun for them meeting secretly and now that they are only with each other it will fizzle out ! Dev will behave the same way he did with his wife to her and maya will end up being her boring self.
Nope. Two boring and miserable cheaters. It was doomed to begin with.
The movie was ahead of its time when it was released. SRK was always the quintessential lover boy and husband at that time and was one of the reasons why it was so hard to even accept it. Having said which the character of Dev and Maya came across more selfish as their partners did a better job of emoting their pain and the character sketch was absolutely done better. One couldn’t help but feel both Dev and Maya deserved each other for being selfish. But there was something that brought them happiness with just each other. I do think they will be together now as they are terrible partners for the rest

Agreed. Their affair added some excitement in their self made dull lives. I honestly can't see someone like Dev or Maya being happy with anyone.

Had their genders been reversed no one would say that. Rhea did a great job at giving them all a lifestyle. Did you see their house? Obviously she worked her butt off to get those luxuries to their family.
If she wasn't around it was because she was busy being the breadwinner. Dev couldn't handle his failure (and the accident happened because he was prancing around like a mad person without looking around) and took it out on everyone, look at the way his son feared him.
She avoided her colleague when he tried to flirt with her, she gave up London for Dev. No man would've done that. Despite Dev's failures and bitterness Rhea tried to make it work.
Maya was like typical Indian girl "shaadi ke baad pyaar hojayega " She never experienced love . She can't wait forever so she got married to nice guy Rishi. Rishi tried his best to make the marriage work but you can't force "love".Maya liked and respected Rishi but could never love him.
Then there was Dev who fell out of love over the period of time. They were lacking love in their lives. Who knows Maya would have made Dev less bitter and made their relationship work
