Doctors are human beings too and human error is a possibility.

As i said only one third of all depression patients get cured completely. You don't seem to be a doctor so there is no point explaining everything to you because u have decided to blame the doctor now. But genetics and personality also play a major role in mental health.

I am only relaying from personal experience and you are taking it personally when obviously I know not all doctors are the same. I am just saying that some psychs spend or have less time talking to the patient and quickly prescribe medication, whereas in talk therapy you can sometimes pick up on these ques quicker as the patient has an hour to open up to you on what they are feeling.

And yes calibre does matter because not all doctors are equally good just like any other profession, there are those who are not good at their job and those who are excellent. Its not a personal attack on ALL doctors in the world for gods sake.

Is it really true that Sushant slept only for 2 or 3 hrs.

He wasn't alone as such. Rhea lived with him and the pent house was on sharing basis. At least thar was stated during the course of investigations

My family is genetically predisposed to dementia.

Depression, stress and anxiety are precursor to various neurological disorders.

Psychiatrists in India often prescribe OTC medications. They do not tell the patient that if a drug does not suit you or your condition, it has be weaned off.

Common drugs are used for autism, bipolar, degenerative disorders to manage the behaviour phenotypes.

I am sure Sushant being a science student wouldn't have messed up with medications. His father is a doctor, so he may know more about medical literature that his peers.

Sushant's family used to visit him, so if he was sleeping for only two or three hrs then it's a matter of huge concern. During his PVs days he never looked as if his body lacked sleep. He was a fitness freak, used to rehearse for hours. Physical strain will lead to sleep atleast for five hrs. If thats not the case then family members shldnt have left him alone.

I have heard the side effects of depression pills is very strong.U feel sleepy the whole day..a bit tired. It May differ from person to person. But as far as I know most of the people do not want to take medicines.

Baki I don’t think the doctor would have been aware of this sudden action. If he was not taking medicines that means he must not have visited the doctor also for a while. And in this lockdown hardly anyone is bothered about anyone else.COVID has made things very bad.The loneliness and frustration during this lockdown has made even the sanest minds go crazy.

Not a psychiatrist here but I am a provisional psychologist. I’ll speak based on laws in Australia, so cannot speak for much about India. A practitioner cannot disclose anything unless they have reason to believe that the patient is at risk of harm. It could be possible that the practitioner was not aware that Sushant was suicidal or no longer taking his medications. You can only find that out if the patient attends their appointment.

I’ll also touch on another topic. Some people have asked how someone so intelligent could become depressed or suicidal over petty BW related behaviour. Intelligence and mental health has no correlation. The most intelligent person in the world can even suffer from depression. In psychology, when we first asses a patient, we make a formulation of how the condition may have developed. We look at the following:

  • Presenting symptoms = What is Sushant currently suffering from/rate level of severity and how often it happens.
  • Predisposing Factors = Does Sushant have any genetic/biological/social vulnerabilities that would make him more susceptible to a mental health condition? Any family history of depression etc? Childhood traumas? Mothers death?
  • Precipitating Factors = A specific life event or any triggers that caused the onset of the mental health condition. This could be his mothers death that initially triggered it? It could even be a specific event, i.e. bullying in BW or any other personal issue.
  • Perpetuating Factors = We look at what factors are maintaining his negative symptoms/ not helping to lessen his condition. This could also be in line with all the bullying/unfairness that he had to deal with in BW. It can be considered as a factor that maintained his depression rather than improve it. Maybe?
  • Protective Factors = Did Sushant have any strengths/support that could help him deal with or improve his condition. He had close friends, loving family etc. But it could also be a possibility that his perpetuating factors were more severe or constant, therefore overshadowing any protective mechanisms.

Mental health is incredibly complex and you have to take so many elements into consideration. I’ll also add that mental health is very personal and all the factors that I’ve spoken about will differ from person to person. Something we see as very frivolous can be perceived significantly for another. Don’t look at mental health with one lens.

Hope this helps somewhat.

This is quite informative. I never knew the terminologies but this is somewhat how even I understood depression.

1/1...A common concept in criminal law / doctrine is a person who knows to swim can't sucide by jumping in water, last second agony before death compels him to get out. Similarly a person who can hold his body weight on a hand can't sucide by hanging himself.

1/2.....As some where I noticed that Sushant was able to do pushups, can hold his body weight on hand, it is unlikely that he would have been successful in hanging himself.

What do you guys feel?

does depression leads to schizophrenia?

human brain is so much of mystery with conscious unconscious and sub-conscious mind

They are two different illnesses although a patient with Schizophrenia could have comorbid mood symptoms or have depression related to his psychotic symptoms. Depression inltself does not lead to Schizophrenia. There isn't a cure the way there is no cure for diabetes or hypertension - these are chronic illnesses which require long term management to keep the symptoms under control. Rehabilitation of a patient with Schizophrenia is a significant challenge. The medications themselves have side effects which make compliance an issue. ECT is a brilliant modality of treatment but it has been so villianized by the popular media narrative that patients or relatives refuse it quite often. Ironically, it's probably the safest in my opinion.

I get your frustration but there is another aspect to it. My personal experience with many patients has been that when they come to a psychiatrist, they prefer to have medications rather than go through therapy. It's the same as with investigations - if a doctor asks for investigations, he is looting you and if he doesn't, then he doesnt know enough or is negligent.

If I recommend therapy, am told many times, they prefer to have meds than go through the longer and often more emotionally difficult process of thought or behavioral change. Then there is the aspect of what is appropriate. Therapy will not be effective if the patient has no or little insight or awareness - like in psychosis. If depression is severe, again the risk is too high to wait for therapy to be effective.

There are unfortunately many facets which need to be balanced in a risk-benefit analysis before deciding the treatment.

Or is this guy whose your friend actually dating that girl? Suddenly everyones personal issues were common knowledge.

This is so wrong on so many levels. I remember being interested in psychology and psychiatry as a teenager because of my school psychologist who was absolutely a life saver. I cant even begin to tell you how personally offensive this mentioned behaviour is. I am so sorry you had to go through this.

I am spamming this thread now coz I just read through the posts. My apologies for it.

The mind is a very very powerful organ. Dont underestimate it. If it decides it wants to shut down, it will do so at the cost of any survival instinct. Manic or psychotic patients get energy 10 times of what they should biologically have, depressed patients make suicidal attempts which could be immensely painful or ride over the inherent survival instinct. Your mind is making you hear and believe things in some of these illnesses which, even though we may call impossible, is the absolute truth for the patients.
