and think of what will happen if there is only one man and he doesn't know martial arts..the girl gets out by beating him up? atleast she will save herself in that situation...why focus on the negative and not the positive?

as long as the society doesn't change...why not do what we can...even if its not a 100% guarantee for safety....if out 10 even 1 is saved that will be something.

Anyone defending Rani's victim blaming rhetoric is a problem.

Yes it is ALWAYS a GREAT thing to learn self-defence for ANYONE. Whether to defend oneself from a sexual or non-sexual attack. Learning martial arts is a positive thing.

But Rani's opinion is very much outdated - not every girl can save herself from being raped by becoming an MMA fighter.

She learned Krav Maga for her film in 2014. She's married to the CEO of one of the biggest companies in the country. How can young girls from poor families afford marital arts training? Even actual professional marital artists struggle to fund their careers. They can't afford gym time or to pay their coaches. How can a 6 year old learn Judo and fight off 30 men?

Rani's approach is so backwards, she's so stuck in the 90s.

Martial Arts training CAN benefit some people in some situations, yes. But it's not THE solution. She is actively blaming the victims.

When asked about her personal experience of harassment, she said "I have never experienced this because I have a husky voice and carry myself with confidence" - something along those lines. So any girl who god-forbid is shy or has low self esteem, somehow deserves to get harassed because she finds it hard to defend herself? That's victim blaming, and not the way to go Rani.

The saddest thing is, after her disastrous performance at Rajeev Masand's roundtable last year, NOBODY in her team has been brave enough to BRIEF her to refine what she's trying to say, to convey it more sensitively. She has reached a point where her ego is so big and probably she surrounds herself with "yes ma'am" types. Yikes.

I have not seen all the interviews. But Rani was cringe in the roundtable where she said women were responsible to prevent rape.

Here is where I stand on self-defense in relation to sexual assault.

Self-defense is valuable. Women should learn self-defense if they can. It will help them gain confidence and maybe help defend themselves in crisis.

However, self-defense is not mandatory. It is not easily accessible and available to all women. Even with the knowledge of martial arts, it is not always possible to defend oneself.

In the case of gang rape or violent sexual assault, women may not be able to defend themselves or may decide not to fight to avoid being tortured or killed.

Women under the influence of drugs and alcohol, whether voluntarily or drugged, are physically incapable of fighting back.

In marital rape or intimate partner rape, women may still feel a sense of love or loyalty and find it difficult to fight back.

Power dynamics also play a role. Being raped or sexually assaulted by professors, bosses, and in general, people who have power over your future and career can be very trying.

People have different fight or flight responses. Some women freeze. They cannot run, scream, or fight back.

In each of these cases, it is NEVER the victim's fault. Only the RAPIST is GUILTY OF RAPE and should be held RESPONSIBLE for RAPE. When a woman is raped, where she was, what she was wearing/doing, whether she defended herself or not, these are all irrelevant. All that matters is that the RAPIST committed a HEINOUS CRIME and must be brought to JUSTICE.

Anyone trying to make excuses for the rapist or say that the women brought it on themselves even in the slightest way is an IDIOT who needs to SHUT UP!
