So yeah Gully Boy was only appealing to the urban class youngsters. There can be a few exceptions but they are far too less to affect it's BO. Parents, uncles, aunties, grandparents, people in their middle ages etc. wouldn't be interested in watching it. So why on earth are you comparing it to something like Bajirao Mastani which has the SLB tag and more than anything had mass appeal because it was an epic Romance saga?
It's absolutely ridiculous to compare these 2 films. Gully Boy was something new and different for the Indian audiences, something they aren't used to but still it did pretty good business.
It's music also didn't have mass appeal like for e.g. Kabir Singh's music has but still it did good business and it was primarily a musical.
As for 83, of course we'll see in future what business it does but it's definitely going to be a hit even I believe that.
Also did you actually compare Kapil with Sanjay? 🤣 One is a legend, the first Indian captain to lead India to its first World Cup victory and the other is just another nepo product who is mediocre when it comes to talent and is certainly no legend.
You're also forgetting that Indian people are absolutely crazy about cricket. Ranveer is currently a superstar so yeah I can see why people are saying it's gonna be a sureshot hit.
Gully Boy was released on 3350 screens. It's not a niche film. Your personal experience doesn't mean anything when the producers themselves don't think so that it's niche. Otherwise no point in giving it a wide release or doing so much promotions. Neither a niche film will get such huge opening. And I'm comparing it to BM because the movie opened bigger than that film. Niche term is an excuse because RS fans are actually using it as an excuse for RS giving an underperformer. It didn't work with audience, that's another thing, but its not niche.
I compared Kapil Dev with Sanjay Dutt based on their draw to their biopic. Not about their contributions. Kapil Dev is Amitabh Bachchan of Cricket, but his fans will be too old, and its not necessary that a cricket fan will also be a movie fan and will die to watch his biopic.
The level of opening RS gives is not enough to justify his "Superstar" status. But thanks for calling him that. I hope Mellisa got her answer.
