Ranbir Kapoor has officially stepped away from a long-in-the-works musical biopic to focus on his lead role in Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming Ramayana, which is set for a two-part theatrical release on Diwali 2026 and Diwali 2027.
Director Anurag Basu, who has been attached to the biopic for years, recently told BBC News that Ranbir had to choose between two important films, and the decision wasn’t easy. “Ranbir had a tough choice in life Kishore Kumar or Ramayana. It was very difficult for him. In the end, he chose Ramayana, and I think it was the right decision,” Basu said.
Ranbir and Basu share a collaborative history, having worked together on Barfi (2012) and Jagga Jasoos (2017). Both have often spoken of wanting to reunite creatively. However, aligning schedules has been an ongoing challenge. “We keep trying to work together, but it’s just not happening,” Basu admitted.
While Ranbir’s departure from the project is a significant shift, reports now suggest that Aamir Khan may be under consideration for the lead role. However, Basu remains cautious and told Mid-Day, “Until everything is finalised and the contract is signed, I don’t think I should speak on it.”
He further added, “This project has seen many ups and downs over the years. So, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it happens this time and I go on set with the story, which I’ve been trying to tell for the last decade. I won’t jinx it by speaking about it.”
Meanwhile, Anurag Basu has kept busy. His latest film Metro... In Dino, which released on July 4, received positive response for its ensemble cast and layered storytelling. His next project, a musical drama tentatively titled Aashiqui 3, stars Kartik Aaryan and Sreeleela and was initially scheduled for Diwali 2025, but may now shift to early 2026.
While Ranbir’s exit has reshuffled plans, Basu appears committed to finally bringing this long-gestating biopic to life even if it takes a little longer.
