No he's not. He's a producer. He saw an opportunity and seized it. Period movies are what people want to see so he'll show them just that.
Not to forget that he distributed Baahubali which was a fantasy/period movie in 2015 (before BM)

SLB may have his flaws and he may not be the best and mediocre according to some but he is not a bandwagoner like Karan who is only jumping on to the period/fantasy/historical bandwagon just to cash on it.

Baajirao Mastani was SLB's passion project for more than ten years before he was finally able to make it in 2015. He shelved the project twice before it was finally made. He produced an opera based on Padmaavati in Paris before he made the film. So unlike Kjo SLB always had a love and passion for period/ historical movies and is genuinely interested in the genre. The genre is not just a money-making golden goose for him.

Pretty much this !

He saw SLB did well with Bajirao Mastani and Padmavaat and now wants to cash in - besides trying to give Alia her 'period drama' ( maybe he did try get her cast in SLB movie and failed.. so he took his earnings from recent movies and produced this..spate of historicals in which Alia had 2 roles... Kalank, Kesari, Takht.)

He wants fame and money and power- he himself says that- so he will try ANYTHING to achieve this .

I guess he is trying to prove that Alia can do period dramas as well and dance to perfection like SLB heroines?

Let's be honest, SLB will never consider Alia in his period films.

The closest film to Mughal e Azam has been Jodhaa Akbar which was actually the First successful Period film in recent times.

SLB tried to leverage its success by repeating the same Hindu-Muslim angle since then.

Karan Johar is trying to copy either SLB or Rajamouli. We will have to wait for Takht to see.

WHy wait for Takht though?
We have Kalank first - which already looks heavily inspired from Ram Leela and Jodhaa Akbar ...
Regarding Takht:
He's going to do a K3G of the mughal era😕.. so yeah... not very promising ( for me).

@bold Exactly what I said. That's what I respect about SLB. For Karan, it's all about money money money... there is no heart, soul, passion and vision in him which is required for making a historical film.
