EXCLUSIVE | Sonam Kapoor: We have trivialised the #MeToo movement. It has become watered down now

Updated Feb 02, 2019 | 13:25 IST | Gaurang Chauhan

In an exclusive interview with ZoomTV.com, Sonam Kapoor talked about the #MeToo movement and the way it has turned out to be in India. Watch the video below.

EXCLUSIVE | Sonam Kapoor: We have trivialised #MeToo movement
EXCLUSIVE | Sonam Kapoor: We have trivialised #MeToo movement

After rocking Hollywood, #MeToo movement finally came to India and sort of rocked Bollywood as well. But unlike Hollywood, where the sexual harassment allegations and accusations were treated with seriousness and the authorities were involved, in India, barring one or two cases, almost every case was all about the social media trial. And after creating a lot of noise on social media and in the media, #MeToo movement is slowly fading away.

After a glorious 2018, Sonam Kapoorreturned to the big screen with Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga. When I asked her about her take on the movement and the nature in which it was treated in India, Sonam agreed and stated that we indeed are trivialising it. She said that as of now it has been watered down, so we need to be a little more careful about it.

She exclusively told ZoomTV.com,

Ya, we are definitely trivialising it (Me Too movement). If you have to, you have to do it with a lot of thought. And you have to do it...because it's become watered down now. It's all gone and unfortunately, it is the way it is. We need to be a little more careful about the accusation and articles. The media doesn't realise how powerful it can be.

Watch her talk about the same below at 09:13:http://youtu.be/hy5zoMZoZG4

As far as her film Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga is concerned, the Shelly Chopra Dhar directorial released yesterday and opened to a decent Rs 3.3 crore.

Just because her favourite Hirani is accused suddenly me too is trivialised.

This woman and her hypocrisy never ceases to surprise me. 🤢

the very fact that she is speaking up about me too movement while promoting her film, supporting another producer who has cast her as an actress in her next film, makes me wonder why the media instead of telling us that she is biased and that her opinions are completely for her own selfish interest ,is presenting it as the gospel truth...
the media even if it is entertainment news has a much more civic duty of constantly fact checking and informing its readers like in this instance it should have printed with Sonam has said and then directly printed below it that please note the comments made by the above actress us only for her own selfish interest and does not represent the true state of society

Imagine if you were in the victim's shoes and this #WokeSociallyProgressive Queen was essentially calling you a liar in the national media

Oh god!! Sonam needs to hear herself talk coz most of the times she talks nonsense!! If one has nothing good to contribute then its better to shut up instead of sabotaging the cause.

Facts please. If and only IF Sonam was indeed approached to play in Munna Bhai 3, then it was by the producer and not the director.

The article didn't state once that the potential sequel would be directed by Hirani.

Sonam didn't say anything wrong regarding the Hirani case imo as she only said that she reserved her judgment. I guess the processings are underway.
Funnily enough, the only cringeworthy thing she said was that she tends to believe the women in such cases which I find normal because of what she might have overheard growing up in Bollywood.

She's right about the trivialising of the MeToo movement. We just have to see how Rose McGowan and Asia Argento (who also turned out to be a rapist!) decredibilised the MeToo movement, how some of the flagbearers of the movements had previously supported a known rapist of a 13yo girl and how it was a well-known fact what Weinstein was up to.
Some people would use this movement as a weapon and it will end up taking away from the movement.

Only last week, Chris Bown was accused of (gang)rape in Paris and the victim was lynched on social media because it seems unbelivable that she would turn down Chris Brown.

How so ? Her money-making machine really ?
If it's about the rumors regarding Munna Bhai then the same rumors didn't take Hirani's name once but only stated that it was VVC who approached Sonam with the offer. Same VVC who chose to distance himself from Hirani.

It's always hard to aknowledge that someone you know is capable of the vilest thing. Sonam hasn't claimed he was innocent but that she reserved her judgment.
