For any script to work, audience should be able to see themselves with the protagonist. Whether he is a multi billionaire, or a coolie, if the character's vulnerability connects with a common man, it gets hit.

Sharukh's earlier characters had that connection with Indian junta (He might be a Khan, but his popular character has always been Rahul).

Chak De was a offbeat lim, a film with no female lead or dance. The character Kabir Khan's trouble is not felt by majority of the audience. Sharukh made it a hit, because he was in his prime. But MNIK took the theme too far. Audience could not connect to Rizwan Khan at all. It flopped.

In recent years, it is getting more and more difficult for the common people to associate with the character that he plays. Take for example Gaurav in Fan. No fan of any star can connect himself with such an obsessive fan like Gaurav. I have not watched Zero. Was anyone able to connect with Sharukh's character there?

Raees was not exactly a family drama. Violence, Sunny Leone item song, all kept family audience out from the trailer itself. Even Harry Met Sejal. SRK's (All Khan's) target audience are not teen agers. They are mainly family audience. A trailer which is not family friendly is immediately ticked off. Indemnity bond trailer made sure, his target audience will not go to the theatre.

Second thing is the budget of the movie. Sharukh even today delivers his first day better than young stars. Even if his movie collapses in the first week itself, it will come nearing 100 crores. But problem is, despite that it becomes flop. Reason is budget. May be he earns through his studio which made the VFX of the movie. (But I don't know who would pay, if he himself is the producer).

Also the price at which film is sold to distributors. If Manikarnika earns 90 crores, it will be considered a superhit, as it was sold to distributors at 65 crores. But Khans movies are always sold at a much higher price. Hence they show losses.

Whether it was the original heart-throb Dev Anand, the charming Shammi Kapoor or the original superstar Rajesh Khanna. Action stars like Dharmendra/Salman or all rounders like AB/Aamir Have a much longer shelf life. The reason is that the male fan following is a lot more loyal and action, by it's nature attracts more males.

So, coming to SRK, its not that his recent work has been terrible. It's more that a large chunk of his fan-base has moved on. Sadly, it's never coming back either.

The critic is so diversified that it would be a Catch 22 situation to keep all this in mind for one movie.

I equally believe that some are just rehashing what has become popular opinion (and I even doubt that all those movies trashed have been watched by all who trashed them)...but that is another subject.

There are some points I can very well understand because they have nothing to do with the quality of a movie, they are grounded in the viewer:

1. SRK lost fans after KANK and JTHJ (love-making and kissing scenes) who didn't go to watch JHMS and Zero neither (including families).

2. No connect to the story/plot/narration/character(s)/genre

3. Frustration because the own (build-up?) expectations weren't (sufficiently) fulfilled.

It is no wonder that all those 'small budget' movies named here had neither number 1. nor number 3. as a valuable reason. The new generation mostly has yet to build an expectation-loaded mind in the audience and a powerful fanbase (Ranveer with his freak-personality and Ranbir as the "enfant terrible" are the closest to the pressure of superstardom, I think)

Another point I noticed when reading posts about SRK: criticising prevails although he still remains a highly impressive/charismatic/attention-getting person...(I have the feeling even more than Aamir or Salman).

If ever somebody asks me what I think he should do, I would answer: what he wants to do. The chance to have success or to fail is the same.

I abstained from involving politics but I'm convinced that this is something to consider when it comes to the often glaring differences between domestic boxoffice and overseas acceptance. (pallavi undoubtedly has a point here).

I liked his non-srk, simplest role in Swades a lot,... I guess,.. He can easily handle small budget, slow movie, mango-man roles... Have not seen his " Dear Zindagi yet,..

All the biggest star came in the industry as a bachelor, and despite of his being a married man, he could deliver and establish himself as the biggest Khan, a next superstar after,... Dilip saab, Kaka and Big B,..and also that without doing any lafra-sadan with any working females,... ! His Jazba and Jigara , kabeel- E -taarif hai hi, no matter how hard, I like to see a Hindu biggest stars carrying stardom titles,... like Kaka or Big B, he remains praise-worthy,... His sense of humor and brain-sharpness and the key-word i.e. " presence of mind remains just unmatchable,...His name was just little bit heard lately with Priyanka with true/false light rumors and kidding homosexual relations with kJo ( sure a jokes ) ,.. other than that, he has maintained his marry-hood and still reached to the Top,... Truly praise-worthy, for a nearly orphan person with no cinema background fore-fathers or any capable well-established siblings,.. His latest speech on TED in US, I was listening with a teary eyes, how he described his father's demise in the back Trunk,..

As a person, sometimes he speaks high of Pakistan, ( perhaps his relatives still living there ) speaks less to nthg about terrorism or any Pakistani attacks, political related thingies,.. perhaps to maintain his own fan-audience and hence business in Pakistan and ME nations,... And, he's not open to Charity to Jawans, kids, Hospitals or any such majorly,... don't know if he may be doing hidden per Islam,... ( Had seen his two DVDs of biography made 15+ yrs ago,... ) though these are his private choices, other than that, He holds no records of bhai-logs se mili-zuli harkatein, carrying arms or such, lafar-sadan with co-actresses,..., other killing crimes, black money scam / Indian taxes not filled,... Panama or any such scandals, so far has not came out or at least have not heard,... he's investing and carries big building complexes in Dubai,.. etc,... but again it's his private choice about where to invest,...

I just salute such self-made, w/ heavy will power, " kar ke dikhaane waale " guys,.. despite of all odds,... And showering of misfortune by the almighty,...as , I , myself is also of somewhere that average age if you "combined average " of all 3 Khans, and may hardly compare myself as 0.001% successful, compared to such self-made tycoons,.

Bravo Man ! You earned that name and fame,.. and U deserve it,... ! Stay Blessed,...

When I had seen his era of his first movies like Chamtakar, I had assumed that only a fool can give this guy any further second movie,.. ! But he proved many wrong,.. be she a laffing like hell, Kajol,.. when he had said her that,... I will be super-star !!!

Ajay Akshay are also considered superstars and in same generation as Khans, so why are their 100 crore movies applauded, even the trashy ones like Houseful series, while SRK's good movies are also called trashy?

I have not name called anybody here, just pointed out their obvious bias against SRK, which is apparent from their sweeping judgement of ALL his recent movies including the good ones.

If SRK has such bad script sense, he would not have done Raees, Fan, DZ.

Its the directors and writers who failed him in other movies, his acting was always lauded by critics, why arent people mentioning that? Shows the blatant BIAS

I know what most of this forum feels abt SRK, Ive seen that since 2015, they also trash his good movies while lauding other actors trashy crap. So sorry I take opinions here with a large lump of salt.

If you have limited knowledge then refer to websites like Koimoi, BOI before posting

As for sending SRK to TV, hes the only actor who became a Superstar from a TV actor, nobody has and will repeat that achievement ⭐️
