IMO Gully Boy is a nice film that has found commercial success. A few years ago, Indian audiences would not have accepted niche audiences. Plus I think Ranveer's stardom and popularity with masses has a huge role to play in its success. Some Divine and Naezy songs have existed for years, but now thanks to Gully Boy the whole country is singing it. Similarly, if Zoya had picked a newcomer or an offbeat actor the film would have been critically acclaimed but not received the roaring success it has now.
Back in the day there was a clear delineation between mainstream and parallel cinema. The line is blurrier now. Even mainstream actors like Ranveer Singh, Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt want to experiment. More than bringing Ranveer down, I think box office India wants to bring down the entire movement trying to blur the lines between mainstream and parallel.

niche is something which is related to everything limited.

How can we classify a movie with over 3000 screens called niche?

My point is the line between niche and mass is being blurred. Without Ranveer Singh's star power, this would have been a niche biopic.

A movie inspired by two rappers from Dharavi would have been an obscure biopic that became a sleeper hit due to WOM. The right star and right promotions elevated it from niche to something everyone looked forward to.

Niche movies ki maa behan ek kar di hi BW walo ne😆.
60-70 crores ki cost aur 3350 screens mai kaun niche film release karta hai be😆

Right even distribution isn't for a small section ... targets widespread audience! ... Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt [Both with BO pull], hit album, romance angle, widespread release DOESN'T make it a niche movie!

I get your point. But the movie isn't typical masala pot boiler, and Ranveer (and to some extent Alia), deserve praise for their drawing power, but the scale is huge and not niche. Same thing was with either FAN, Tubelight, and so on.
