The BOI article explains. It's not a masala film like Simbba. You can have anyone act in it. You can have great music as well. That doesn't make it masala. It's the treatment and content which makes it masala or not.

In a masala film the hero would hv a seeti maar entry with dhobis washing colourful clothes and a big song and dance number.
In a film like Gully boy the hero's entry is in the dark and almost unnoticed... so I guess the treatment is more realistic.
Honestly the content is not. It's a simple underdog wins against all odds film which has been done a million times before... but it's treatment is not the same.

But from a content perspective it's really not niche I guess

Yes. Like I sd even story wise it is not a niche topic or anything like that.
I guess movies like Finding Fanny is a niche movie in terms of content, treatment and distribution...,, even say Piku for eg...

Also does anyone know why BOI doesn't like European style of film making and mocks directors who do use it? I mean what's the issue?

yesterday in our town, in the main market place called police bazaar, some muslim guys started chanting Pakistan Zindabaad, and got themselves nicely beaten by Khasi guys here, than SOT(Special and most deadly police here) too and later police protected them and took them to thane.
good lord, in such serious times, why some people have to act like chamans.
I mean even Khasis, whose many sections still chant ''Khasi by Blood, Indian by force'', got angry on them.
And these idiots on such situation thought it was funny to say so.
