After Neerja, will this be a second milestone in Sonam's career? She is quite good in the trailer and is emoting well. But her dialogue delivery is uneven, as usual.
It takes guts to accept a role like this, and kudos to Sonam for that. But will she be able to carry it off? Would Deepika, Kangana, or Anushka have been a better choice?

On a side note, The beauty of the trailer is unparalleled. While this might not be the first Indian LGBTQIA+ feature, it's definitely the most mainstream one. No hardcore activism. Just pure love. It's been years since I've fell in love with a trailer. The music. The stars. The absence of exaggeration.

I think this sums it up so beautifully.
To answer your question no. Not for this story. I think Sonam is the best choice just because of the above quoted reason. Her simple traditional Indian beauty and that warm middle class family backdrop couldn't have been anymore perfectly matched because it as u said made it mainstream. No arty actresses, no overt activism, just love, as it should be..

I have fallen head over heels in love with this trailer. Specially the part starting with her asking about why everyone's mind only goes in one direction and how she as a teenager accepts the heartbreaking fact that she will have to always hide her true self. Those moments were just so real. I can't think of anyone else in that role already.

I find Sonam's looks perfect for the part, but I was wondering about her acting skills. Would she be able to flex her acting chops? That's where I'm concerned.

But if Katrina could act so well in Zero, I'm sure Sonam can also surprise us.

^^ I think Sonam just has to be a simple girl, because that's the crux of it isn't it? She is a loving daughter, a friend and sister who lives in the heartland of india. Who she loves doesn't make it a complicated role. (Kat was awesome as Babita but where it's an audacious intense messed up role here it's all about normalcy)
I loved her to bits in Neerja. And if she brings 10% of that innocence and vulnerability here that's enough. I know some people seem to find the final voiceover part dialogue delivery problematic but I don't. Her voice has an inflection and I don't see why this girl' can't have it too? I don't know if I'm explaining myself clearly, if not sorry.
Basically I'm ecstatic about this trailer

I absolutely deeply hope she does!! We need
To talk more about homosexuality esp female homosexuality since that's so rarely shown in India!

I hope Sonam walks away with accolades for this one. The very fact that she opted to play a homosexual character on-screen in a mainstream movie is a reflection of courage. I hope her naysayers(there are plenty) give her credit for this. She deserves to shine!

Having said that, I have always liked Sonam on-screen. She looks so beautiful always, and has something very innocent abt her. Also, her choice of roles is unconventional. I really wish she gives a mind-blowing performance.

I don't like Sonam but applaud her to take this subject. Hopefully movie deliveres a sensible message.
Offscreen I also hope she acts less preachy around movie promotions

I think she will specially if anil k is playing her dad, she can channel her inner emotions better with him , I think. Moreover , I don't think she is as bad an actress , she was good in neerja as well as ranjhana but she does needs to work on her dialogue delivery

See she is a bad actress but I love her choice of scripts.
Especially her work with rhea.
Proud of being a chick-flick lover and I love that they got it in Bollywood.
Also she was bad in neerja but it was a great film.

Hope she acts here.

If someone has the patience to dig up my old posts - I've made suggestions for lesbian romances in Bollywood and Sonam has always been my number one choice to be in it. Casting aside my speculation that she herself is queer (its a bad forbidden rabbit hole).
Being a talented actor isn't always enough to deliver a good performance, especially when it comes to the portrayal of a marginalized group. You have to have empathy for the character. Someone who is not queer or passionate about LGBTQ rights will struggle. You have to be comfortable with the character. Someone who is not comfortable with their public image or sexuality will struggle. Look at how many people turned down Fawad's role in Kapoor and Sons. You have to be willing to let the creators of the character take control. Someone who wants to interpret roles and infuse themselves in it will struggle.

Sonam checks all boxes. She has always been vocal about LGBTQ rights and is willing to put her money where her mouth is. She is very comfortable with her public image and sexuality. First of all, she probably does have a thick skin from all the criticism she gets. So any flak she gets for bringing queer stories to the front will roll off. But she also seems comfortable with her sexuality. There are some people despite all their progressive views have a need to assert their gender identity or sexual orientation. They stiffen up and freak out when there is any fluidity. Sonam seems to be completely comfortable in her own skin. She is completely comfortable getting and giving attention to people of all identities and orientation.

Finally, I think what makes Sonam a bad actress is she relies 100% on the director. She does not try to interpret or imagine the role from her perspective. She delivers only what the writers and directors ask of her, no more, no less. Which is why she can stun with a performance like Neerja but be subpar in others. She needs good writers and directors to tell her exactly what to do. In this case, it is an advantage. She is not going to be an actor interpreting what a lesbian acts and feels like. The script is written by a transwoman. She is going to rely on the writer and director to tell her exactly how to depict queer emotions. It shows in the trailer. There are no femme butch stereotypes. There is zero service or titillation to the male gaze. But in just a few sequences you have the emotional trauma of knowing your different and longing for acceptance from the ones you love.
