A disclaimer would have done. (Loosely inspired from, not entirely based on..)
Obviously, people go to Hirani's movie for light hearted comedies. But Sunju's story is dark, fit to be told by Anurag Kashyap. Hirani's narration is fine (That style is his trademark. I have always loved that). But his subject was wrong. So he has to compromise on something. Either narration or the subject. He compromised on the subject.
It is difficult to justify a person, who was romancing the lead of his film when his wife was battling with cancer (and did not bother to see her). So just omit that part. Fine. True. As a viewer, I don't want to see such a male lead.
If Hirani has presented this movie as a fiction (not with the name "Sanju"), would it have been better? (Nayagan was based on Varadarajan Mudaliar. But lead's name was different. So, director was not accused of whitewashing. It became artistic liberty).
