saw this today
akshay kumar(as tapan) was fab loved his expressions and mouni (monobina) was good nailed the bengali girl and she got a nice debut with fab scenes.I liked tapan(akshay's) unshaken belief in achieving victory and represent India on a global platform. the best part was the patriotism and pride in India's first win as independent India.

It did have resemblance to #ChakDeIndia like a coach keen on victory and wanting the team to have unity(the brick scene in the movie was good) and key players fighting before preeti- komal and now raghubir-himmat.

spoiler:
I liked some scenes especially tapan's struggle to set up team, wadia under tapan's wing agreeing to everything tapan says and helping tapan come to UK, tapan convincing monobina to cook for the team and sponsor the funding initially with her jewellery, himmat's hockey scenes at end were fab as he finally got to play and then stole the show. Nikita dutta also has a small cameo in this film she is expressive although she really has small screenspace. in the final the indian players played barefeet in the rain as their original shoes had bad grip this which was unusual to see and the idea was from mouni's character monobina giving tapan(akshay) the idea

Gold Movie Review

The straitjacket of the sports film seems to have flattened writer-director Reema Kagti's distinctive voice but there is a palpable high when the team finally coalesces into one and goes for the kill

THE BOLLYWOOD SPORTS FILM HAS SETTLED INTO A TEMPLATE. LIKE SPORTS FILMS THE WORLD OVER, THESE FILMS ARE ALSO UNDERDOG STORIES. BUT MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, THEY ARE BIOPICS OR BASED ON TRUE INCIDENTS. AND INVARIABLY THEY ARE NOT JUST ABOUT SPORT AND WINNING AGAINST ALL ODDS BUT ALSO ABOUT NATION-BUILDING WITH DOLLOPS OF PATRIOTIC FERVOR. MARY KOM, DANGAL AND NOW GOLD, END WITH THE INDIAN FLAG BEING HOISTED AND THE NATIONAL ANTHEM BLARING. IN THESE FILMS, SPORTS ARE NEVER JUST SPORTS.THE PLAYING FIELD IS A FURNACE IN WHICH NATIONAL CHARACTER IS FORGED.

GOLD FOLLOWS THE FORMULA. THE FILM HAS BEEN WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY REEMA KAGTI WHO EARLIER MADE HONEYMOON TRAVELS PVT. LTD. AND TALAASH. THE STRAITJACKET OF THE SPORTS FILM SEEMS TO HAVE FLATTENED HER DISTINCTIVE VOICE THIS IS A DIRECTOR WHOSE FIRST FILM FEATURES A COUPLE WHO TURN OUT TO BE SUPERHEROES. BUT HERE, THERE IS NO IRREVERENCE OR EDGINESS GOLD IS A STRAIGHT NARRATIVE TOLD WITH THE SUBTLETY OF A SLEDGEHAMMER. THE STORY IS BASED ON INDIA'S ASTOUNDING VICTORY IN THE 1948 OLYMPICS. IT WAS THE FIRST TIME WE PARTICIPATED AS AN INDEPENDENT COUNTRY AND THE HOCKEY TEAM BEAT THE BRITISH ON THEIR HOME TURF. JUST IN CASE YOU MISS THE POINT, WE ARE TOLD, AT LEAST THREE TIMES, THAT THE MATCH IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE REVENGE FOR 200 YEARS OF SUBJUGATION. A VOICE-OVER FREQUENTLY EXPLAINS WHAT WE ARE SEEING. THE BEATS ARE PREDICTABLE. AND YET, REEMA MANAGES TO MAKE THEM EFFECTIVE. BY THE TIME, THE HARD-EARNED VICTORY CAME, I WAS GENUINELY MOVED.

Be warned though, it takes two hours and thirty minutes to get here. Gold is unnecessarily bloated. The first half works more smoothly. With crisscrossing narratives, Reema establishes the stories of the two key players in the team the royal Raghubir played by Amit Sadh and the villager Himmat Singh played by Sunny Kaushal. We also meet Samrat, played by Kunal Kapoor, a legendary player who later becomes the coach and Imtiaz Shah played by Vineet Kumar Singh, the captain who is forced to leave for Pakistan during the Partition. And of course Tapan Das played by Akshay Kumar, the junior manager, a hockey fanatic who builds the team and pushes it to succeed.

Gold is a fictional account of a real incident. I'm not sure how many people are aware of this victory so applause to Reema for bringing it to light. The film is handsomely produced. The period details are in place and despite some dull stretches, the narrative has hold. In the second half though, the wobbling becomes more precarious. The tonality alternates between dramatic and comic. I have no idea how much of the story is fiction but at one point, Buddhist monks play a key role in supporting the team. Tapan solves problems so easily that it seems outlandish. And of course the British are all villains one of them says, "Find a way to beat the wogs. We also have federation politics, team politics and the necessary lectures on being a team player and national integration all life lessons that Kabir Khan gave us in Chak De! India 11 years ago. Bollywood still has to make a hockey film to top that one.

The weak link here is Akshay Kumar as Tapan. First, you have to get past his muddled Bengali accent. Tapan is written as a complex character who drank and gambled but who was willing to risk everything for hockey. Akshay brings to the role a cheerful enthusiasm but little gravitas. He plays Tapan broadly, in an almost comic manner. Tapan's tragedy and frustration don't come across. At one point, the dhoti-wearing Bengali babu drinks and breaks into a distinctly North Indian song Chad Gayi Hai. The performance feels like it belongs in some other film.

Wisely Reema surrounds Akshay with more natural performers. Vineet, who radiates an understated strength, has the most poignant moments. Kunal and Amit are solid even though Amit relies too heavily on ramrod straight posture to indicate royalty. And I especially enjoyed watching Sunny Kaushal who is delightful as the short-tempered and talented Himmat. Mouni Roy, the only woman in the narrative, is wasted as Tapan's shrill wife she keeps slapping him. But even she gets to declare that she is taking revenge for 200 years of British rule.

These inconsistencies and the exhausting length weigh down Gold. But Reema ably pulls the loose threads together in the thrilling climactic match. Nothing here matches Kabir Khan's sattar minute speech. But there is a palpable high when the team finally coalesces into one and goes for the kill. Besides, I always get a little emotional when the tricolor flies high. I think you'll fall for it too. .

Gold And Satyameva Jayate Score Big on Day One
Thursday 16 August 2018 T
Box Office India Trade Network

Gold had a very strong opening day of around 25.25 crore nett which is the same range as Baaghi 2 and will be the 3rd or 4th highest opening day of the year. It is easily the highest opening day ever for Akshay Kumar as it beat the 16.98 crore nett of Singh Is Bling which was also released on a national holiday (Gandhi Jayanti).

The film had strong numbers in metro multiplexes which was always likely but even mass centres where normally this type would take a lesser opening opened to strong numbers due to the presence of a star like Akshay Kumar coupled with the holiday factor.

The best collections have come in Mumbai and Delhi / UP while East Punjab lost around 50 lakhs nett due to two Punjabi films Mr & Mrs 420 Returns and Dakuaan Da Munda taking out a big chunk of that market not only for Gold but Satyameva Jayate too. Mysore and West Bengal where Akshay Kumar films tend to have lower collections have done.

There will be a fall on day two for Gold as the holiday factor comes out and it goes into a working day and that too Thursday but it remains to be seen where the collections go on Thursday. The multiplex audience should be back over the weekend as long as the content is accepted..

Satyemeva Jayate has also done very well collecting around 18.50 crore nett which is a huge number for this film. It has scored all over with all circuits recording very strong collections even the ones dominated by multiplexes. Mysore is a bit low but that is expected but it looks to have edged out Gold in Bihar, Assam and Odisha while collections in Rajasthan, CP Berar and CI are in the same range.
It is easily the highest opening day for a John Abraham starrer be it a solo starrer or multistarrer and will be 5tth or 6th highest opening day of the year. Though the collections are lower than Gold the footfalls will be just 5% less as it has a larger chunk of business coming from single screens and smaller multiplexes. The key is now how well the film can sustain and it does not have to do much work from this sort of start to be a success but eventually for all to benefit from it has to sustain at some level as that will mean some appreciation for the film rather.

Gold is let down by Akshay Kumar
Sukanya Verma

A national hockey team captain (Vineet Kumar Singh) forced to leave his town and team after Partition and play for its newly created neighbour.

An aristocrat (Amit Sadh), who excels at the game but is too smug to realise why he must not exert his privileges on the field.

A hot-tempered Sardar (Sunny Kaushal) lad blessed with extraordinary talent frustrated by his under-utilisation and internal politics.

Gold has three noteworthy stories to tell.

Yet, it sidelines their potential to say something pertinent about a freshly freed country, its hopes and uncertainties, to focus on a drunkard manager's flimsy contribution in Independent India's victory at the 1948 Olympics.

Tapan Das or Tuppen, as he likes to pronounce it, is nursing a dream since 1936 after his hockey team got gold for British India before an elated crowd that includes a world-famous German tyrant (more like Bertie Wooster with a toothbrush moustache).

A decade goes by as India becomes free from British rule, Pakistan is born and World War II cancels the 1940 and 1944 Olympics.

In this time, a disappointed Tapan has taken to the bottle and bets against wrestlers.

When he finally lands an opportunity to put together his dream hockey team with star player-turned-coach (Kunal Kapoor), a surly senior creates problems for no legitimate reason.

Director Reema Kagti, who put together a quirky ensemble in Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd and combined sorrow and supernatural so sublimely in Talaash, struggles to give her distinct voice to Gold' wishy-washy complexity.

As a consequence, Tapan's disillusionment feels exaggerated and grating.

Nationalistic fervour is pretty much thrust upon him after the tricolored flag fortuitously lands in his hands.

But since those hands belong to Akshay Kumar, rest assured, it shall not be taken lightly.

Bollywood's go-to crusader reminds us repeatedly of his plans to avenge 'Do sau saal ki ghulami' by speaking in a jarring accent that is clearly more Bollywood than Bangla, breaking into a dhoti-clad bhangra as though he's confused Gold for Singh is Bling while being a hockey hero from the sidelines.

It is a sloppily written role performed with equal ineptitude, a rare misstep from the actor, who hardly gets it wrong anymore no matter how partisan or embarrassing the contents.

As Gold grows into a timeworn underdog tale, the British emerge as the unanimous bad guys having changed their objective from divide and rule to divide and defeat.

It is nice to see Kagti remembers that India and Pakistan break up is too recent to view its common enemy differently. It gives the climatic scene's communal cheer a heartrending unity, years before it would be looked upon as romantic idealism in Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

Barring these little details, her recreation of the era feels more postcard than living.

Gold's glossy, sepia toned rendition of retro revelries is fancy, but the contemporary energy they betray is telling of how accurate the endeavour is.

Characters are dressed in vintage, set designs throws in the decade appropriate props and knick-knacks, but one never gets a sense of those times or the wave of patriotism it so conveniently whips up to suit its purpose.

Gold's other issue is the game it builds itself around.

Hockey isn't a visually exciting game for everybody.

Unless its stakes and soul are smartly and shrewdly woven into the narrative like Chak De! India, viewers are unlikely to invest.

Half-hearted depiction of the sport, a moment of epiphany to showcase barefoot bravado and starstruck fan following of a former legend among Buddhist monks do very little to promote its cause.

The only thing Gold borrows from Shimit Amin's deeply layered classic is the Sabharwal-Chautala rivalry.

Luckily for Kagti, her supporting cast stands her in good stead and does well in bringing out the vulnerability and ambition of their characters.

If only they'd get a little more screen time.

At 150 minutes though, Gold digresses too often to accommodate a bizarre episode of Amit Sadh's philanthropy, Mouni Roy's domestic chatter and heavy-handed federation politics.

It is only when Gold moves away from Akshay Kumar's blundering Bangla and hockey humbug to become a story of grace among go-getters that it comes close to becoming the movie it should have been.

And then the national anthem plays and manipulation wins once again.

Gold Has Upturn On Friday

BOI article: https://boxofficeindia.com/report-details.php?_e_pi_=7%2CPAGE_ID10%2C3645005942

Gold has shown an upturn in business on Friday as collections go up by around 25-30% to 10-10.25 crore nett which takesits total business to 43 crore nett apprx. This is a plus for the film considering what happened yesterday as it fell 70% but it makes Saturday the most crucial day for the film as the momentum has to continue.

The death of ex prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee meant it was a holiday in some states and there was a Parsi New Year holiday in Mumbai. This means it was a holiday in Mumbai and Delhi which could have boosted collections on Friday but that remains to be seen and Saturday will tell if it was part holiday boost or the film isgaining momentum again. Still the film is in a better position now compared to where it was on day two.

Satyamev Jayate will return similar collections to Thursday at around 7.50 crore nett which is also pretty good. The growth is not there but still these levels are good enough for this film financially speaking. The problem for the film will be ifthere was a boost of the some states being on holiday and Parsi New Year and Satyameva Jayate did not take advantage but like Gold only the collections tomorrowwill tell.

The film has collections of 33.50 crore netttill date which is a decent total with Saturday and Sunday still to come.

Gold which had an excellent start on day one saw a big drop on day two but has recovered the momentum over the weekend with solid growth over the weekend. The film has grossed 70.50 crore nett over its extended weekend with Sunday going back over 15 crore nett when Thursday was just 8 crore nett.

The film has done well in places like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Kolkatta. The mass markets are decent as its competing with Satyameva Jayate with similar collections but thats mainly due to the star power of Akshay Kumar as the film is not the type for the likes of UP, Bihar and CI.

The first five day business of Gold is as follows.

Wednesday - 25,25,00,000 apprx

Thursday - 8,00,00,000 apprx

Friday - 10,00,00,000 apprx

Saturday - 12,00,00,000 apprx

Sunday - 15,25,00,000 apprx

TOTAL - 70,50,00,000 apprx

The film needs to sustain on Monday and the film will then have a good run for a couple of weeks as multiplexes are generally doing pretty good business especially on Saturday and Sunday. The first day was a given. It can also get the advantage of Bakri Eid on Wednesday.

Finally see it.

Let me start with the negatives:

I am kinda disappointed with Reema Kagti, movie is nice, actually the hockey matches and the drama during the end is very gripping and excellent, but there was something missing, the movie required some great writing and screenplay, hence the film is kinda average in that manner.

Also felt songs were completely unnecessary apart from Naino me Baandhi.

Positives:The movie gets the setting and the shoots really well.
The cinematography gives the touch of those eras.

Acting is good, I don't why critics were criticising Akki, he didn't looked forced into the story in anyways rather his character was the key glue in keeping the movie intact, and Akki looked every part the goofy, cheat and drunkard manager.

Others like Amit, Kunal, The captain guy, the actors who played Mr Wadia and Mr Mehta were all good.
But Vineet and Sunny were just too good.

Surprisingly Mouni was not bad, she actually looked like someone capable of dominating not just Akki but everyone evident in the scene when she gives instructs those monk to work faster.
The girl who played Sunny's love interest is cute, kinda like pre-surgery Vaani.

Another good thing about the movie for me was the theme and intent. The intent that India should always be united or else vultures are everywhere to capture us. It didn't showed Pakistan in bad light either.

But the best thing about the movie is the scenes involving match and training scenes, they look very authentic and on point. Despite knowing India will win eventually it still felt tense and real. You could be like yeah goal!!

A good watch, made worth because of the acting, match&setting and the good intentions.

7 out of 10 for me.
