Finally I have watched the movie, i was excited for this one since i have watched the trailer, there were multiple reasons for this. I was impressed with Ishaan in the trailer, Janhvi and his chemistry was raw and vibrant from the trailers itself, on top of that the title track made me a fan too.
I think after many years i have watched a dharma movie which i have absolutely loved. I would mention that I did not watch Raazi yet and ADHM was the last dharma movie i had watched and it was awful with zero heart.
SPOILERS ALERT
Dhadak lives upto the promise of being a soulful love story, from the very first scene, I have felt for the love Madhu had for Parthavi, at times he reminded me of Kundan from Raanjhana with those joyful runs and losing himself in happiness even at a mere glance or insult from Parthavi. This is what everyone probably feels when they are in love, especially in the age of early 20s and Parthavi is such a badass that like any other girl of her age, she deeply enjoys the attention and also loves Madhu's every action which is only meant to impress her. This whole first half was entertaining and joyful, the college scenes especially "How do I tell you, how much i love you'' is one of my favorites, a typical dharma scene, but Madhu's innocence and Parthavi's silent pride in his guts, that was actually heart warming. Should i say i loved Madhu and his friends bonding too, wish they had more scenes together.
Then came the second half, it was not unpredictable, but the struggle was real, i could relate to the characters who ran away and now had to start their life from scratch. I liked how Parthavi despite being in a shock after seeing the conditions of living around her did not for once feel like leaving Madhu whereas Madhu encouraged her to do an official job despite he was a waiter at a local restaurant. Their argument and then them patching up at the river bank was such an important part of their journey and struggle, that even though they missed their families so much, they knew that they had sacrificed and hurt everyone just for each other. One of my favorite scenes from the movie is when Madhu calls his dad after buying a phone for Parthavi and seeing her enjoying food with her boss, that was a heart breaking scene especially because unlike Parthavi, Madhu still develops the courage and talks to his dad and bawls but his dad rejects his cries with a cold voice. Ishaan was brilliant, absolutely brilliant in this scene. Had Madhu kept his dad's promise, things would be different, he did realize it that day.
The climax, I do not know what to say 😭.. It was brutal and nobody deserves it. The moment Parthavi was leaving for buying the sweet and Madhu with his son in his arms, asking her to go later with a very unhappy expression in his face, I knew that it is soon and I had to watch it. Madhu's instincts not letting Parthavi to go out leaving him and her son here with a house full of people who has never looked at him with respect and Parthavi's happiness of seeing her family especially her brother accepting her son, everything was an absolute intense build up to the climax. The moment that thud sound happens and Parthavi collapses, i became numb, i knew about the climax before but watching it still was terrible, they deserved a happy ending,.
About honor killings, if the ending of both sairat and dhadak is taken from real scenarios then i do not even have the guts to think how kids who have seen their parents dead or how someone like parthavi who has seen her husband and son thrown away from the balcony would ever live with sanity or any kind of motivation. Practically someone like Parthavi can never ever love or marry someone again, cannot go back to her evil family, cannot even live in that house which was her and Madhu's dream house. 😭.. I can only say that may God bless everyone...
The actors were brilliant, let me start with Janhvi, she is not wooden at all, she is pretty in an unconventional way, not with great features and all but her face holds so much innocence and her eyes are so expressive that she has done justice to Parthavi, somewhere above Sridevi should be happy that her daughter actually did a fabulous job and carried out such an iconic character from marathi cinema with the labels of being a product of nepotism. Janhvi should do roles like this, indian much, where there is a character growth, I am sure she will slowly develop into an amazing actress if she gets good mentoring and good projects.
Coming to the show stopper, Ishaan well, it is difficult to believe that he is Rajesh khattar's son who plays male lead's dad in Bepannah, i was surprised to know it because all i saw was Ishaan was shahid's brother but well he impressed me more in a single film which shahid has never been able to do in 15 years, i could never develop liking for shahid despite his good acting, but Ishaan won me over with his act as Madhu. He has a lot of boyish charm and s much range in his expressions that he can carry out such author backed roles. It is also amazing that he is only 22 years old, like a kid indeed and he already has delivered such a brilliant performance while most of the focus and hype was on Janhvi. He should win the debut awards everywhere otherwise it will be a robbery.
Overall, i will recommend you to watch the movie, even if you have watched sairat, this is a good movie if you like tragic love stories. I have not watched sairat because i do not know marathi and did not find a link with subtitles, but i am sure sairat is definitely a masterpiece as everyone says here.
