Now, I am waiting for Nagraj Manjule to see Dhadak-Shashank Khaitan

8:31 AM

Posted by Fenil Seta

Chaya Unnikrishnan (DNA; July 12, 2018)

After helming two superhits, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania (2014) and Badrinath Ki Dulhania (2017), Shashank Khaitan is ready with his next directorial, Dhadak. The film, which is based on the Marathi blockbuster Sairat, will mark the debut of late Sridevi and Boney Kapoor's daughter Janhvi. It also stars Ishaan who won acclaim for his debut movie, Majid Majidi's Beyond The Clouds. Here, the director talks about working with the newbies, comparisons with Sairat and why he wanted to tell a new story set in a different region.

Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania and Badrinath Ki Dulhania were based on original scripts. What prompted you to make an adaptation of Sairat?
I saw Sairat for the first time with my mother in Nashik. I remember I got out of the theatre shocked, excited and completely dazed. Immediately, the thought occurred to me that I should adapt it. I called Karan (Johar) and requested him to see Sairat. Within two days, I watched the film with him, again. Karan asked me why I wanted to adapt it, when it was already such a big hit. What is it you want to tell that is different?' he questioned. I took him through the changes that I wanted to make in terms of the set up, where I wanted to take the movie, how I wanted the characters to be slightly varied and the conflict that would be similar yet different at the same time. I wanted to take the essence of Sairat and make a film that would have my voice, which is Dhadak and give it its own identity.

What were the challenges while making Dhadak?
The challenges were the same as they were with my earlier films to make an honest movie. Here, the responsibility was more because we were adapting not only a cult film of Maharashtra but also of India. I had to ensure that I made it with the same honesty, not try to justify anything but take the responsibility of making a good film. Also, Janhvi and Ishaan, who were entering the movie business, were completely depending on my guidance. I had to ensure that I got the best performances out from them. That's been the approach to keep it simple and not complicate it. While adapting the film, I had to make sure that I retained everything that I felt good about the movie and didn't do anything different just for the sake of it.

Ever since the trailer is out, there has been talk about how you have given this story a better and glamorous spin...
(Cuts in) It's not better. People are assuming that after watching the trailer. Udaipur looks exactly the way it is. I am not trying to make it glamorous. I am staying authentic to how the city is. That is the way people there dress or look. There is a little bit of royalty, which comes from a different class and that's where I wanted to set the film. I understand that region better than if I had tried to go more rural or in the interiors. Sairat starts with a cricket match and I have played the sport as a youngster in places like Lasalgaon and Kolhapur. That is one of the reasons I connected to Sairat on a much deeper level. I know Marathi, I have studied it while living in Nashik. I understood the victory of language that was there. Having understood it, I wanted to tell a new story. If I set Dhadak in Maharashtra or in the interiors, then why am I making this film? I can just dub or subtitle the original. But I wanted to give it a different voice and approach in a different region. Udaipur is actually a nice conflict. It has amazing palaces, small gullies and places that look completely distinct. It's an honest adaptation and not something done for the heck of it.

Are you prepared for the comparisons? How do you plan to cope with it?
I don't need to cope with it as I am completely prepared for comparisons with Sairat. I know the pros and cons of what we have done. I am aware that people, who have seen the original, especially in Maharashtra, wouldn't readily be accepting it. Even as far as the song Zingaat is concerned, there is a mixed reaction. People, who didn't understand the original version, love the song. I am aware of the criticism as well. While making creative material, I am open to both praise and criticism. Even when Dhadak's title track released, I knew what impact it would have. I knew how Pehli Baar, which is Yad Lagla in the original, would be received. The reason for retaining these songs is not commercial. It was done because they added something to the movie. Sairat's music is world class, the melody is rich and universal. It ignites emotion. I am open to whatever people have to say, I have extreme faith in Dhadak and I'm proud of the film.

After working with Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt, how was it working with Janhvi, who was a debutante and Ishaan, who was just one film old?
This was to be Ishaan's debut film, too, but he got a unique opportunity to collaborate with Majid Majidi and we were more than happy to let him do so. Working with Janhvi and him has been a lovely experience. Yes, this is the first time I am directing debutantes. When I worked with Varun and Alia, they were one film old and had learnt a lot from Karan Johar, but they were still new and young. Now, I am much older than when I first met Varun and have a fatherly instinct towards Janhvi and Ishaan. I have a certain process with which I direct my actors, so I took them over that journey as well.

Midway through the shoot, there was a tragedy when Sridevi passed away. It must have been difficult for Janhvi to resume after that. How did you handle it?
Janhvi resumed 13-14 days after her mother's demise. It was difficult, but half the job was done by her family, who were extremely strong. They really took care of her. Janhvi herself is a brave girl. Her first day on the set was normal. We didn't make any conscious effort to sympathise with her or try to be stricter or more disciplined. We just let the day go as it progressed. We wanted to get back to work as we had our commitment to our producer. Even Janhvi didn't want to take a longer break because an empty mind is something which will trouble you more. It worked out well for her as she had a film to go and work on it.

Did you make any changes in the schedule or the scenes for her?
No, I stuck to the schedule. It was not one scene, we had a 12-hour shift. We kept shooting like maniacs. If you change a scene, it shows an effort to say that listen I am feeling bad for you'. We didn't want to take that approach. We didn't want to sympathise, we can't with a loss that great. There's nothing I can say or do that will make her feel better. We didn't try and change anything to suit her. There was one emotional scene and a couple of fun sequences. Some of them were tough scenes, but she approached it professionally.

Janhvi and Ishaan share a cute chemistry as is evident from the trailer. How did you achieve that?
I didn't actually work on their chemistry. We just kept working on the script and in the process we were spending a lot of time together, especially Ishaan and Jahnvi, because they were reading and constantly performing. I had taken them with me on two recces and everywhere I went in Rajasthan. By the time we were ready for the shoot, they were not only comfortable with me but also with the entire unit. They automatically connected to the fact that Udaipur is home. They felt they knew their characters very well, they had trust in each other and that trust led to chemistry. You can look at that person with love and if the scene demands, you can fight with that person too because you trust each other. We spent 10 months together before shooting and that really helped because we got to know each other.

Did you tell them to see Sairat before shooting for Dhadak?
Ishaan saw it with me for the first time. Janhvi said she had already seen it. But once we decided we are making a film based on it, none of us saw it. I didn't want to see it because when I was adapting and rewriting it, I wanted it to come from my own instinct rather than watching and writing the same scene. I wanted to flow with what I know naturally. I requested Ishaan and Janhvi also to not see it because the setting of the film is different. Since Dhadak is not set in Maharashtra, but Rajasthan, inherently they are different characters. I didn't want those (Sairat) characters to influence them because they (Janhvi-Ishaan) might perform it well but it might be wrong for the region. I told them to just trust the script, flow with it and my direction.

Now that the film is a week away from release, what are your thoughts?
I am extremely excited for the world to see the film, and proud of both the kids. I am waiting for Nagraj Manjule (director of Sairat) and his team to see it. I am sure we will show it to them soon. As I said earlier, I would like to know people's opinion. I would love it if they like the film, and if they ask why did you do it', I would respect that opinion, too.

EXCLUSIVE! Janhvi Kapoor reveals what advice her mother gave for Dhadak'

Samina Shaikh | Jul 13, 2018, 16:55 IST
Enjoying a yummilicious palkova (milk-based sweet), Janhvi Kapoor looked quite excited for an interview with us. Throughout the interview, those innocent eyes had a dream to make it big in Bollywood.

Enjoying a yummilicious palkova (milk-based sweet),

Janhvi Kapoor

looked quite excited for an interview with us. Throughout the interview, those innocent eyes had a dream to make it big in Bollywood. Her lovely smile expressed a sense of satisfaction after having worked really hard on her debut movie. Let's hear from the actress in this exclusive interview with Bombay Times Online.

How was your reaction when you were first approached for a Dharma movie?

It was a huge dream of working with

Karan Johar

, having him and the kind of knowledge and experience he has. I am so thankful to work with Shashank Khaitan because of the kind of person that he is. One of the things I am most thankful for is to have Shashank as my first director and as a mentor. He has got such great energy and he is someone that inspires me as a person. Even the opportunity to tell this story and go on this journey, as Parthavi was a dream come true.

Since the beginning you wanted to be an actress?

As a kid, I always wanted to be an actor. In the middle, there was a phase where I felt like, let's explore other avenues. Because I was very fond of history, I was very fond of writing. So, I wanted to do all these courses before I made up my mind. But then I started with an acting course. And I remember there was this one day where they asked me to do a scene. And I just felt like, this was right. I wanted to do this; I want to feel more like this. I think acting comes with a place of feeling.

Were you nervous to face the camera?

I was excited, more than nervous. Not because I think I know my craft so well. Like I said, Shashank made such a friendly environment on the sets. It was like a family environment for all of us while shooting. I felt secured and very safe. I felt like it was the safest place to make mistakes.

Talking about your character in Dhadak', you said that it is more like your sister Khushi. Did you observe her closely while playing the role?

I have grown up with Khushi, so I didn't really have to observe her. But yes, sometimes while doing scenes and then come back to home, I would see Khushi and draw parallels in my mind. There were things which are similar. Khushi is very sensitive but not very expressive. She is a little pricey as a person. She can be a little bit of a bully. But, there's strength and resilience in my sister that is magnanimous but it is silent. There are only a few things that make her cry. When she loves, she loves deeply and there is a very deep sense of loyalty. That was another parallel I saw in Khushi and the character I am playing. They act like they don't care. I think my sister is like that and I saw the similarity in the character I played onscreen.

Talking about your equation with Khushi, does she bully you?

Khushi bullies me so much. I am like the bechaari' behen.

Did your mother

Sridevi

give you any tips before joining Bollywood?

The biggest and the most important thing my mother told me is to be a good actor you first need to be a really good human being and an honest person. Otherwise, you cannot approach any character with honesty if there is malice in your heart or anything negative in your heart. Because you play these characters, you can't judge them. In order to allow yourself to feel things, you need to be an open person. So that stayed with me. But when it came to shooting my character, she was very clear that she didn't want to help me find things in my scene or help me approach the role. Because she wanted me to do it on my own! She wanted me to find my character Parthavi on my own so that it would be all me and not mom.

Did she give any feedback on your performance in your debut movie?

My mother never came on the sets of the movie.

Did she give feedback on the rushes of the movie?

When she saw the rushes, she was very happy. But she advised me to not put makeup in the second half which I followed.

In some scenes, you give us a glimpse of Sridevi. What do you have to say about that?

Of course, I take that as a compliment.

How was it shooting at a water body full of snakes?

I had heard about one-two snakes in the water body. But they said, they had put net however they were being very fishy that day. I was like, in the name of movies, I will shoot for it. It was fun though as now I have a story to tell. Shashank wasn't a task master, but he was clear in his head what he wanted out of us.

You also learned kathak for Dhadak'? How was the overall experience?

I had a lot of fun. I love kathak as a dance form. I think it is most beautiful dance form. It wasn't tough as it was a crash course and the segment where I am dancing in the movie is very brief.

We have loved Sridevi's dancing skills; did you get to learn anything from her?

My mother was not a trained dancer. She was just so good at dancing and everything. I even asked her that everyone thinks you are a trained dancer but you are not. She said that, You know my lines and everything, I never think about it. But I just have fun.' She kept saying that if you are genuinely having fun, it will show on your face and then people won't care about if your lines are right or not. I remember hearing this one story. A choreographer was telling me the other day that they were teaching a scene to mom and she was practicing before the take. They thought she was just marking the steps. But in the final take, mom did exactly like that but her face lit up so much in front of the camera. She was having so much fun on the camera like no one cared.

Do you think you can match up to your mother's level?

I don't think so, that's a very long way to go. But yes, that's the goal.

While your mother was reluctant with you joining Bollywood, how was your dad's reaction?

Papa is a very chilled out person. He was very supportive from the beginning. I think Papa helped ease Mama into the idea of me acting. He told her that she seems passionate about it. He was very cool about it.

What do you have to say about your equation with

Arjun Kapoor

as a brother?

I know that I have lost my mom and nothing can ever pickup for that. And sometimes it is really hard...but now I feel like, now I have a brother and a sister that I didn't have much of a relationship with before, for whatever reason. But, I am thankful and blessed that even in this tragedy, I have them now. Because they have given me so much to learn and I have got so much security and safety from them. Like Arjun Bhaiyya said recently that we are still trying to figure things out. But, there is just a feeling of home and there is this feeling that I think everything will be okay as we have them now and they have given so much love.

Did your brother Arjun Kapoor get to see the movie yet?

No, Arjun Bhaiyya is travelling right now. Papa has already seen the movie. I think the people I am most excited to show the film is Khushi, Arjun Bhaiyya, Anshula Didi and Lata Maasi. I want to make these four people see the movie more than anyone else. If I feel like I have made them proud, that will be my achievement. I think that is the most important thing to hear feedback from them.

You revealed recently that you have a crush on

Rajkummar Rao

. Any plans to work with him?

Oh God! That will be like a dream if I get to work with Rajkummar Rao. You know apart from being obsessed with him as an actor, I think after this obsession came out, and he felt bad for me and messaged me. I had this pleasure to talk to him a few times and he is so sweet and genuine and simple. I remember even mom telling me this, she met him at an event. She was like, I know why he is such a great actor because he is such a good person. He is so simple.' So yes, I would love to even just see him work, I think. Like thoda toh talent mere bhi aajaayega.

Any actor who is in your wishlist to work with?

I think Ishaan would have been on that list for sure, but I have worked with him now. I think Vicky Kaushal. I saw Sanju' last night and I felt like I had a dream about Kamli (Vicky Kaushal's role in the movie). He is so good. And so is

Ranbir Kapoor

, he is unbelievable. But Vicky Kaushal is so cute in the movie and he has done the acting so naturally in Sanju'. He is a very committed actor when it comes to his performances.

Who is your favourite actress in Bollywood?

Right now, it is

Alia Bhatt

.

Any director of your choice you would like to work with?

So many! I would like to do 1000 more films with Shashank because I am obsessed with him. I really want to work with Imtiaz Ali, Gauri aunty and Balki uncle,

Sanjay Leela Bhansali

,

Shoojit Sircar

and Abhishek Chaubey. With Karan Johar, I would like to do a movie too. I keep dreaming, kya hone waala hai kya pata.

What's next after Dhadak'?

I think let Dhadak' happen first, then we will see.

If not acting, what would have been your career alternative?

I would just wish to travel around the world, write a lot and meet new people. But I think that I would have joined living a nomadic life. I think after a certain point, it would feel unfulfilled. I don't think I would be able to do anything other than this (acting). I really don't think so.
