HE IS JUST PHENOMENAL!

Agencies | Updated: Jul 5, 2018, 02.00 AM IST
Ishaan Khattar
National Award-winning choreographer Shiamak Davar says he is proud of actor Ishaan Khattar, and is looking forward to the release of his film Dhadak.

"I'm truly saying this, I'm so proud of Ishaan. He is such a professional, dedicated and hardworking boy and I'm so glad that now the world can see how talented he is, Shiamak said.

"When he used to come for dance classes, he never behaved differently and showed off that he is Shahid's (Shahid Kapoor) brother. He would interact with all his batch mates, learn willingly and had a genuine interest.

"His mother (Neelima Azim) and Shahid had come the graduation show of my dance certificate program and were in tears when they saw Ishaan on stage. He was just phenomenal.

Even today, every time he has a release or make a new foray, he always messages seeking blessings and shares his growth. This truly humbles me to know that he still is so grounded and remembers his roots, he added. Dhadak is a romantic drama directed by Shashank Khaitan, produced by Dharma Productions and Zee Studios. It is scheduled to be released on July 20.

JANHVI KAPOOR: ACTING IS THE ONLY THING I KNOW HOW TO DO WITHOUT MOM

By Natasha Coutinho, Ahmedabad Mirror | Updated: Jul 5, 2018, 04.00 AM IST
Janhvi Kapoor
A couple of days ago, Janhvi Kapoor shared a picture from Lucknow while promoting her debut film, Dhadak. In less than an hour, the post received two lakh likes and thousands of comments with one pointing out that she was a "carbon copy of her mom Sridevi and another insisting "your mother lives on through you.

The debutante who lost her mother, Sridevi, on February 24, admits that as the release date July 20 draws closer, she's beginning to feel the weight of expectations, more so now than when they were filming, when her focus was living the character and Pari's journey. "During the shoot, I was far removed from the din. Now, I can only hope that I live up to the expectations, including my own, she says.

The 21-year-old debutante acknowledges that comparisons with her actress-mother are inevitable and doesn't think anyone can ever come close to her legendary status.

"Hopefully I'm worthy enough to be given the chance to create my own identity, she says, admitting that she wants to make her mother and her fans proud. She admits she hasn't watched too many of her mother's film but Sadma and Mom are her favourite.

She recalls her first day on the sets, with Sridevi and her filmmaker dad Boney Kapoor among the spectators, agreeing that their presence made the day all the more special. "It was my moment of truth and fortunately it went smoothly. The first shot was okayed in one take. We had prepped so much that I wasn't nervous and felt like everything in my life had been building up to this moment, Janhvi reminisces.

She also recalls how the film's producer, Karan Johar, had dropped by after designer and family friend Manish Malhotra told him about Janhvi and urged him to meet her. They did, briefly, after which they had a few readings during which Karan made her enact some scenes. "He was considering me for another film initially, but then I met Shashank (Khaitan), Dhadak just happened and everything felt so right, she informs, adding that not once did KJo tell her that he wanted to make this movie with her, it was understood.

Sridevi passed away suddenly in Dubai, when Janhvi was mid-way through the shoot of her first film. She showed admirable professionalism, returning to the set after the last rites and ensuring Dhadak kept its July date with the theatres. "It was an organic decision, she says. "Surprisingly, the only thing I don't associate with work is mom.

Both of us had consciously decided that this would be my own journey. Acting is the only thing I knew to do without her.

She admits that the last few months have been full of heartache and she's already craving for another creative outlet. "Working was the easy part, everything else was a struggle, she says with a catch in her voice.

Brother Arjun Kapoor has been a pillar of strength during this difficult time, posting a message on the social media welcoming her into the industry and joining Khushi, Anshula and their dad during a family vacation in London last month. "I've realised Arjun is very wise, just like dad. They can comfort and guide you in a way that many people can't. It comes from experience and having made successful films. Everyone has always said such nice things about him and the way he's been brought up. He values honesty and tells me to be respectful towards people, Janhvi smiles.

Arjun couldn't make it to the Dhadak trailer launch as he was out of the country shooting for Vipul Shah's Namaste England, but dad Boney, uncle Anil Kapoor, cousins Mohit and Harshvardhan and sister Khushi were present at the event to support her.

"Everything I've done is to get validation from mom and dad and this kind of love and unity from the family makes me feel safe and secure, she reveals.

Does she plan to work with Boney in the future? "I'd like to be worthy to get an opportunity from anyone. I hope people like my work and want to see me again. I hope papa likes me enough in my first film to want to cast me, she replies, unwilling to be drawn into a conversation about Khushi and her acting aspirations. "That's for her to answer, she says shortly.

Meanwhile, having watched co-star Ishaan Khatter's debut film, the Majid Majidi drama Beyond the Clouds, she is all praise for the actor and admits she looks up to him. "Ishaan inspires everyone, including me. He's been a big help and is a positive energy to have around, she beams.

The Hindi remake of Marathi hit, Sairat, was a learning experience for Janhvi, teaching her a lot about Rajasthan and its heritage, things she admits she hadn't known because of her upbringing, schooling and the people she interacted with. "While I have travelled with my parents around the world, we were often confined to the hotels, with heavy security around us, because of their celebrity status. The Dhadak shoot gave me the anonymity to explore a place for the first time and every day was an anecdote, she says, remembering how, in Udaipur they'd wander off during breaks and once got their palms read by an astrologer on Gangaur Ghat. "In Kolkata we chatted up the locals and feasted on the delicacies. I cherished the freedom the film gave me.

Janhvi admits that post interval, after the couple elope in the film, the story takes a more intense turn and that, for her, was far more interesting than the first half of the romance because intense emotions come more naturally to her. "There's a scene where my character is supposed to look starved because she hasn't eaten for a few days. Just before we filmed it, I had gorged on pizzas and ice-creams because I had forgotten about the shoot. In front of the camera, I had to pounce on plates of idli sambar.

By the end of it, I was gagging, she giggles. Sridevi was slated to shoot for another Karan Johar's production, Kalank, from early April. Madhuri Dixit has since stepped into the role and Janhvi had taken to social media to break the news. "I've read the script, it's a beautiful film. I'm waiting to see all of these actors together and the magic they are going to create, she signs off.

Pehli Baar is all about the innocent first love'
Director Shashank Khaitan talks about Dhadak's next romantic track that releases today

Ever since its first look was unveiled, Dhadak, which is produced by Zee Studios and Karan Johar, has piqued the curiosity of film buffs. Not only is it an adaptation of the Marathi blockbuster, Sairat, but it also features new kids on the block Janhvi and Ishaan. After the theatrical promo was lauded by everyone, the title track and Zingaat have got us crooning.

The romantic drama's third number, Pehli Baar, which releases today, is a recreation of Yad Lagla that also featured in the original. Director Shashank Khaitan says, "We have retained two songs from Sairat because they lent themselves beautifully to Dhadak. Pehli Baar is about that innocent first love and a young boy's desire for a girl he can never have. Without any set choreography, it captures the moment when Ishaan meets Janhvi and gets attracted to her.

He is all praises for both the actors and adds, "They have worked extremely hard to understand their respective characters. The way they have expressed their feelings in this song is exceptional.

He states further that Pehli Baar, which is written by Amitabh Bhattacharya and composed by Ajay-Atul, is different from the title track. "Dhadak is

melodious but intense because it speaks of eternal romance, whereas Pehli Baar is like that moment of sunshine you experience when you fall in love.

It is sung by Atul Gogavale, who had also rendered the original. "As Ajay-Atul had created the Sairat album, too, you can notice the synergy. All the songs are distinct but belong to the same musical family. They have a great sense of orchestra and yet, there's a strong underlying melody, he signs off.

Thanks for sharing that article choco. Loved reading every bit of Ishaan and Janhvi's interview. Having seen them the way they conduct themselves on TV and now in print, it just makes me heartwarming to finally see two newcomers without a hint of pretence, fakeness and over confidence. That detail interview of Janhvi was lovely to read.
I don't know much about Ishaan but having followed Sridevi's interviews closely, especially in the recent times, I'm so glad that Janhvi doesn't lie and she is very transparent in whatever she says, some things that matches with what Sridevi used to say about her in interviews. Right from the trailer launch where she said how it was just one call that made Dhadak happen for her to how she is naive and proud of that. I remember Sri telling in an old interview that Janhvi was more like her while Khushi was like Boney. She shared an anecdote of how her mother told her to sit in one spot and then forgot about her and hours later, she came out searching for Sri only to find her sitting quietly in that same spot her mom had asked to and Sri said that Janhvi would do the same thing while Khushi would fend for herself. So it's really heartbreaking when Janhvi says the only thing she can do without her mom is acting.
Even small things like her talking about jumping on idli sambar after gorging pizzas. I remember Shashank sharing a picture of Ramkrishna Lunch Home in Calcutta on insta during their shoot which is famous for SI food so such a scene is actually there in the film I suppose. Even about her love for old Bollywood films, Sri herself used to say that Janhvi loves watching old films. I follow this insta account called oldbolly and most of the likes earlier used to be from Janhvi and Ishaan.
So it's really, really nice to finally hear and see two starkids not taking their entitlement for once and instead talking freely about everything that happened like the way it did in real life. I've been pretty vocal about nepotism and didn't even had any inclination towards Dhadak before the trailer released but somehow I really want this film to work for them so that they both are here to stay. And it's not because of any emotion attached to Sri, it is because of finally seeing such humble young adults who are surprisingly respectful of their work and their surroundings, which is like a blessing and rarity to find these days, if compared to the star kids we have had before. Lastly, I'm glad Janhvi's not speaking much about her mom. I don't think Sridevi wanted her to become a carbon copy of her and instead create her own identity. Even during her final interview with Masand, she refused to speak about what all she has taught Janhvi and said you'll find out when you watch the film. Though it's really very heartbreaking to see Sri not being able to enjoy her daughter's film that she was so excited about, I'm sure wherever she is, she would be proud the way her daughter has been conducting herself. Like Sri said in an interview about her 15 year break- I took a break to raise my daughters and I wanted to be 100% dedicated at every work I do...You were successful Sri! The 100 % dedication shows! :) Same goes for Ishaan. Very well raised.
.

Oh and one last thing, I think Janhvi's interviews have taught me not to judge anyone through their instagram pictures. I used to think she would be another of those SoBo, talking in a nasal tone, dumb and entitled brat but look what she turned out to be. 😆 I mean she speaks better Hindi without any accent than Bhumi who is like the thekedaar of desi Indian image. :P

Sorry for the kaafi long post. Emotional ho gaya. 😆

Also they should've released the other original song instead of Yaad Lagla. Again another remake after Zingaat. Would've been great to hear a new tune after Zingaat. Unless they are keeping the original one under wraps since it's Janhvi's first solo song...

I love janhvi but the general Consensus is that her acting was the weakest part of Dhadak trailer. Hopefully it will be better in the film.

Seriously! She's like the epitome of never judge a book by its cover. 😆 I thought the exact same and was so taken aback by her personality...and I am not a Sridevi fan. I admire Sridevi's impact on BW and her work ethic, but I could never connect to her for various reasons. So I never cared for Dhadak because I literally assumed another entitled brat is joining BW in her daughter. She couldn't even speak Hindi a few years ago and you can't tell now. The comparisons are inevitable and will always be there especially now, but I do hope the media gives her a chance to be her own person.

You know I really do like this Kapoor family very much. Even Arjun-Anshula are pretty humble and caring - Boney is lucky to have kids like this. Anil Kapoor and his kids might be entitled and have a sense of arrogance, but they, especially Sonam-Rhea, have their heart in the right place and try to use their privilege in the right way. Even the way Sonam talks about how Anil raised her to believe that girls are no less than boys and not to differentiate and how she was in absoloute shock when she entered the film industry and saw all this divide and inequality..the world wold be a better place if we all grow up not to differentiate.

Ishaan - wish we would get some full interviews of him. They're not there at all. Dharma is being almost unfair here and promoting Jahnvi more. I know he had Beyond the Clouds come first, but come on. That movie was under the radar. But it was sweet of Shiamak to talk about how Ishaan still messages him for blessings and updates when he starts something new...how many people do this really.

@bold That bit got me💔 too. And yes, I remember that anecdote.

Janhvi surprised me too.. Though , maybe because I have heard Sri talk about her and also seen a lil bit of Janhvi's body language and gestures in some public appearances, I sort of guessed she would come across a bit.. innocent (dunno if that's the right word) when we finally see her public interactions post becoming an actress. But, her soft demeanour (khushi is the one with the "confident swag" among the two) has definitely taken me by surprise.

I agree about the family - be it sonam, rhea or arjun, anshula .. Everyone maybe different, but their heart seems to be in the right place. And regardless of what happens within the family, all of them seemed to have been very careful about what to or what not speak about in the media. And somewhere that has played a part in the "reconnecting" between Boney's kids happen a lil bit smoother than otherwise.

I was re-watching Ishaqzaade a few days ago..and it's kinda interesting that both Arjun and Jahnvi will have debuted in the same type of film with overall the same message as well (though Sairat's end makes a far bigger impact)-- there's a lot of similarities between Dhadak and Ishaqzaade tbh. Ironically Shashank is/was part of both. 😆
