The slap is a turning point in the story and is very crucial to the culmination of the love story of the couple.

They have intensified the sound of the slap to make it look impactful in the trailer but I doubt it's that brutal in the real film. And that's actually what makes Sairat different from any run off the mill Romeo Juliet films. It's not about how they fall in love, it's about how they are able to remain in love with each other once thrown out of their comfort zone, in the grim reality of the world.❤️

They are each other's ride or die 😆 ⭐️

that scene made me uncomfortable too.
this director likes to glorify toxic masculinity in general

Tbh, I was uncomfortable watching that slap and I still am. But then I also didn't want to judge anything prematurely and thought maybe it was an important scene to the story. Though I still would have preferred if it wasn't there or that the culmination of conflict could have been shown through a different way.

Men think their life partner is their property. They can control their spouse's choices and actions so any type of objection leads to violence. It's a reality, we condemn it but it's still there so we can't just not show it because it looks better. It's a fact. We cannot skip it to impress certain people. It's better to show it and know we need to improve ourselves then turn a blind eye. Btw, it happens in the west too. Showing it doesn't mean we promote it.

This was something I did not like in the movie. But I also think this is reality. I'll try to explain without spoiling assuming I remember things well.
*WARNING SPOILERS*

Archie (the girl) and Parshya (the boy) are in an unequal economic/caste/power relationship where she is the more powerful. She is very confident, verging on cocky I would say. Archie rides a big bike, she is the first to say I love you. If I remember correctly she threatens to beat up people who are hassling Parshya.

When they run away, the power dynamic shifts. They live a very poor life, but this is nothing new to him but for her she finds it hard. So in this new life things happen that leads to the slap. I have tried to explain without spoiling much. Hope this answers your question.

We can discuss it later in detail after Dhadak releases. I don't want to say any more without spoiling and giving away things.

Domestic violence happens in the world. I don't know if the rates are higher in India, but it's definitely not as frowned upon as it is in the West.

Movies should be allowed to show it. But when it's justified or glorified, it becomes a problem.

It's not the mixing of genres per se that's an issue. It's that the trailer doesn't give an impression the slap was condemnable. I understand the movie will give better context, but the makers are putting the trailer out there to interest us in the movie, and therefore, I'm free to judge based on the limited info I have.
