Parmanu Movie Review: Don't Watch This For Anyone, Watch It For Your Country!

With the proper amount of patriotism, emotions, humour and thrill, the script of this film is a winner.

Parmanu The Story Of Pokhran Movie Review Rating: 4/5 Stars (Four stars)

Star Cast: John Abraham, Boman Irani, Diana Penty, Anuja Sathe, Yogendra Tiku.

Director: Abhishek Sharma.

Parmanu Movie Review: Don't Watch This For Anyone, Watch It For Your Country!

What's Good: It avoids the path of being jingoistic and serves a real event adding a touch of cinematic experience. John Abraham lives this role to the fullest, offers enough nail-biting sequences which are expected from a movie of this genre.

What's Bad: Bads in the movie are not outrightly bad, there are few flaws which can be ignored given the message this story has to narrate.

Loo Break: None! There are very important scenes throughout the film and you don't want to break the link while hearing such an interesting story.

Watch or Not?: Definitely! It'll surpass your expectations, keep it however high you want.

The movie starts with a nonsensical discussion happening in the Prime Minister's Office regarding how China has tested 43 of its nuclear bombs. Ashwat Rana (John Abraham), a junior bureaucrat, comes up with a full proof plan in a floppy (Yes, it was 90's) but gets unheard by the ministers. He's asked to make a brief report and without his involvement, the plan is conducted and it fails miserably. He's used as a scapegoat and gets terminated for this failure.

A broken Ashwat, continues his life as a Civil Service tuition teacher until Himanshu Shukla, principle secretary to the Prime Minister, asks to resume his plan that failed years ago. This mission becomes a way for Ashwat to prove his love for the country. He builds up his dream team to test multiple nuclear bombs in Pokhran, Rajasthan. But to do this without getting in the eyes of American satellites is what the rest of story revolves around.

Parmanu The Story Of Pokhran Review: Script Analysis

The Neerja duo of Saiwyn Quadras and Sanyuktha Chawla Sheikh is back as they pen a balanced script for this one too. With the proper amount of patriotism, emotions, humour and thrill, the script of this film is a winner. To be honest the movie starts with mockery and a dramatic speech and I was turned off in the first ten minutes, but it flies since then achieving nothing but respect.

There are sequences which needed scissoring and pace could've been even more tight. The entire Mussoorie sequence builds John's relationship with his wife but that could've been shorter. Also, Abhishek take cinematic liberties at places but that's totally fine as the movie keeps you entertained throughout. The movie, more than being a national mission, is about the efforts of a team who refused to give up.

Parmanu The Story Of Pokhran Review: Star Performance

John Abraham is perfect! He's subtle when it's required and charming when the proceedings get too intense. The efforts were visible and he delivers a memorable performance. He maintains his balance to not cross the line between patriotism and jingoism.

Boman Irani is decent! He takes the cake in some scenes, but overall has a limited presence. Yes, even in such short screen-time, he makes you laugh and love him. Diana Penty is good, too, and has a seeti-maar scene in the climax. She looks beautiful as always!

The rest of the team plays a very important part and each character does their part well. Yogendra Tiku shines and brings in the comic relief. Anuja Sathe's character is half baked and of very less importance. She's just about okay and should've gotten a meatier presence.

Parmanu The Story Of Pokhran Review: Direction, Music

Abhishek Sharma has managed to pull off a shocker with Parmanu The Story Of Pokhran. He succeeds in making you bite your nails till the end. The entire blind spot' timing sequences of satellites have been executed so well. As the story builds up, one just tends to think how much this tale had to offer. It also makes you wonder how the story would've unfolded in real life.

There are too many songs in the film, some are used well, some are just for the sake of it. Jeet Gannguli and Sachin-Jigar go all out with the songs and partially succeed. Singer Divya Kumar has an important contribution towards passion the script builds. It's good to see veteran Sandeep Chowta composing the background score for such an important film. The BGM has the required tingle which such story demands.

Parmanu The Story Of Pokhran Review: The Last Word

All said and done, some movies serve more than just entertainment and Parmanu provides an experience that will linger in your soul for a long time post you leave the cinema hall. Don't watch this for anyone, watch it for your country.

Four stars!

This movie looks good! John looks so good!!
Good luck to team Parmanu.👍🏼

Thank you so much 😳

Initially I was skeptical whether this film will see light of day?! But I am proud how John went legal way and filed complaint against KriArj and won and they have to pay him 9 crores. He is one hell of producer, when the payments of his coworkers were strangled by these KriArj people he taught them a lesson!

So excited to see him today on big screen after long time...

Thank you everyone please keep posting reviews, as I can't post articles (the first post took me hours to post hehe)

#Parmanu is a triumph for director Abhishek Sharma and lead actor John Abraham... The director, together with writers Saiwyn Quadras and Sanyuktha Chawla Shaikh, brings to life an important chapter from history... This is one story that had to be told...

#Parmanu will be a turning point in @TheJohnAbraham's career... He underplays his part beautifully... Would like to single out @bomanirani too... An exceptional actor who sinks his teeth into the character.

PARMANU: THE STORY OF POKHRAN MOVIE REVIEW

  • TIMES OF INDIA
  • MUMBAI MIRROR
Rachit Gupta, Updated: May 25, 2018, 11.20 AM ISTCritic's Rating: 3.5/5
Story: In 1995, Ashwath Raina (John Abraham) an IAS officer, suggests that India conduct its own set of nuclear tests to stay ahead in the nuclear race with China and Pakistan. After the initial test fails under pressure from America, Raina gets a second chance in 1998 under the new reign of then PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Review:
Parmanu: The Story Of Pokhran' is exactly what the title suggests. It's a part fiction, part fact build up to the Pokhran II tests in 1998, after which India was recognised as a nuclear power on the global stage. While it is inspired by this real-life event, it's story doesn't follow India's nuclear program to the T. It takes a few, cinematic liberties, in the way our scientific community and armed forces beat the American intelligence and surveillance systems to successfully test three nuclear bombs in the desert of Pokhran, Rajasthan. It is not an authentic recreation of history, but Parmanu' is a fairly entertaining look at a story that evokes the right sense of patriotism and national pride without being jingoistic.

The story here is a bit far-fetched, what with John Abraham's motley crew of scientists and army personnel, executing the entire nuclear program within a few days. But the taut execution, editing and screenplay help keep the suspension of disbelief to a bare minimum. The way India's nuclear team outwits the American and Pakistani agents is an entertaining experience. Along the way, Anuja Sathe, playing John's wife and Boman Irani, playing the Secretary to the Indian PM, bring in the right amount of drama and a small dose of comedy. With ticking clocks, racing surveillance satellites and an escalating sense of tension, Parmanu' does manage to engage the viewer. The use of CGI is good too, especially during sequences of outer space and the final nuclear explosions. The movie also does well to use real-life footage of then heads of state from India, Pakistan and US to create a political atmosphere.

The first half of director Abhishek Sharma's film takes a little too much time to set up. With a little more attention to detail, especially with the track of the American intelligence, Parmanu' would have been a much better watch. Thankfully it doesn't resort to Pakistan bashing even as an ISI agent resorts to some villainy. John Abraham leads the film from the word go and is literally the captain of the mission and the movie. Diana Penty is good too, along with all the supporting actors who form the team of Indian scientists and soldiers.

What Parmanu' lacks in detail and authenticity, it makes up with emotions and a sense of national pride. The narrative isn't explosive but it does have the dramatic moments to keep the viewer engaged. Thrills, suspense, drama, a little bit of humour, as well as a solid comment on India's soldiers this movie, largely has all the tricks to please even a discerning audience.

Parmanu - The Story Of Pokhran Has Slow Start
Friday 25 May 2018 12.45 IST
Box Office India Trade Network

Parmanu - The Story Of Pokhran has opened to a slow start of 10-15%. It has opened on the lines of films like Hichki and 102 Not Out as far as occupancy is concerned but has a bigger release than those films of around 1800 screens. The screen count is more similar to Raazi though less screens in multiplexes but more single screens.

The film had a very average trailer and commercial elements like action or music to give it a lift. The film has been in the wars as far its release is concerned with a legal dispute which had to be settled in court. The film is patriotic and has struggled to get here so maybe does deserve some success but the paying audience is not sympathetic and only interested in merits and the collections over the next few days will tell if Parmanu - The Story Of Pokhran has any.

The comparison of the opening shows collections of Raazi and Parmanu are below. All the figures below are like for like.

Mumbai (40 Cinemas)

Parmanu - 1,352 admits

Raazi - 2,475 admits

Delhi (25 cinemas)

Parmanu - 1,167 admits

Raazi - 1786 admits

Chandigarh (8 Cinemas)

Parmanu - 353 admits

Raazi - 457 admits

Jaipur (10 cinemas)

Parmanu - 401 admits

Raazi - 546 admits

TOTAL (83 cinemas)

Parmanu - 3,273 admits

Raazi - 5,264 admits
