John Abraham tests his limits in Parmanu: The Story Of Pokhran'

Published: 14:44 May 23, 2018

Bollywood's macho hero learns to toughen up as a producer as he brings his new thriller on India's nuclear tests to the front

Bollywood actor and producer John Abraham delves into the intricate world of modern warfare in his latest fact-based film, Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran, out in the UAE on May 24.

In 1998, India famously conducted three underground nuclear tests in a remote part of Rajasthan and declared to the world that it has nuclear weapons. It was an unexpected and sudden move that sent shock waves across the world and invited economic sanctions against India, but it was undoubtedly a historic development in proving the nation's growing nuclear might.

Naturally, that covert operation was shrouded in secrecy, but Abraham and director Abhishek Sharma are determined to give us an authentic ringside view of how such a significant mission was carried out successfully.

It will play out like a terse high-stakes thriller, claims Abraham who plays the lead role of Captain Ashwat Rana. Everyone may know the ending, but his film will chronicle the treacherous path.

"There is so much of technical jargon in there and there are so many agencies like DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) and Isro (Indian Space Research Organisation) involved. So the big question remained about how we were going to encapsulate all that information and simplify it. Making all that information palatable was the most difficult job that we foresaw, said Abraham in an interview over the phone.

Accompanying him in this irreversible feat is actress Diana Penty, who plays Captain Ambalika in Parmanu, which means atom. But she isn't just a token woman in this testosterone-charged thriller, claims Penty.

The former model who has acted in films such as Cocktail and Happy Bhaag Jayegi and who grew up with an Army family background felt incredibly proud that she was approached for a role which required her to be a woman in uniform. She is no delicate darling in this film.

"It was a big feat that happened in 1998 in India and just the thought that I am in a movie that tells such an incredible story felt great. I have an equal footing here, just like the boys in this film and on the mission. The way he has written my character is that my capability was never in question because of my gender, said Penty in a separate interview.

She saw films such as Zero Dark Thirty, the Hollywood hit that chronicled Osama Bin Laden's capture, to prepare for her role.

But bringing Parmanu to the big screen was riddled with problems. Its release came into question when producer Abraham had a financial fallout with his production partner, KriArj Entertainment, which led to the film being delayed by more than 11 months (more on that later).

Excerpts from our interview with Abraham as he speaks about why his production was one of the toughest films of his career and why it isn't a propaganda-driven thriller...

What should we know about Parmanu: The Story Of Pokhran?

I chanced upon this subject when my director Abhishek Sharma gave me a rough idea about the 1998 nuclear tests. My first thought was that this will be the most difficult film to pull off in my career. There's so much of technical jargon in there. Making all that information palatable was the most difficult job I foresaw. But that was what lured me. I wanted this story about India conducting nuclear tests to connect with all. My intent was simple: when I decided to take on the project, I showed my team films such as Argo and Eye In The Skyand asked them what they inferred from them. They found them to be tense thrillers that made them wonder whether all those twists shown in those films would result in the mission being completed successfully. We were all clear that Parmanu which means atom should be such an edge-of-your-seat film that should make the viewers wonder if the mission that have embarked on will happen or not. Even if the end is very clear and we know the outcome, the process and the means to that end should be made interesting. But the by-product of watching Parmanu should also be that you come out of the cinemas saying wow' and feel proud that a nuclear espionage of such scale happened in our country twenty years ago. But the intent is that anyone who walks out of the film at the end should feel proud about being an Indian.

Nuclear operations are famously covert. How did you and your team gather information agencies that pride itself for their secrecy?

For the sake of confidentiality, I cannot reveal the names of the officials that we met. My director and team also met several of the officials from the agencies such as DRDO, Isro and the Indian army. There were times when we told categorically that certain details were matters of national secret and that information cannot be used in our film. We had guidelines as to what could be used in the film and we have completely respected them. For instance, we were told that the names of APJ Abdul Kalam [who had supervised the Pokhran-II explosions as the chief of the DRDO] or Rajagopala Chidambaram [physicist] cannot be used in the film. In a nutshell, I can tell you that 90 per cent of the film is accurate and that we have only fictionalised the names. What we have tried to simplify is the process so that it reaches the largest common denominator. It's easy for five of us to sit in a theatre and say that we have made an intelligent film. For my pre-screening, I showed this film to three people who come from three different strata of society an ex-Air Force officer, a school principal and a guy who served me tea. The Air Force official said that the film is accurate in the way the story has been told and the boy who served me tea told me in Hindi that this is one of the best films about India. He also said that he didn't know that such an operation had happened in India and there were so many people involved in it. The principal felt that a chapter on that operation should be included in the syllabus so that every child knows why India is such a great country today. The point is that the film evoked such reactions. And what made me happy was that three people from three different sections of society enjoyed the film.

Can you think of any anecdotes during the filming?

When we did our research, we went to a small town near Pokhran called Khetolai in Rajasthan. I met a 65-year-old man and I was trying to draw details out of him. I asked him if he was around when the tests happened and he pointed to a wall of his house that was broken. Before I could say anything, he said: my wall may have fallen down, but India made it big on that day.' For me, I wanted my film to reach out to that man too. I don't want to reach out to the South Mumbai person alone [alluding to the posh, cerebral crowd in Mumbai]. So director Abhishek Sharma has completely simplified the film and he has made sure that our film reached out to the most common denominator.

Since the film has patriotic undertones, were you worried that the film turns jingoistic or is reduced into a Pakistan-bashing film?

From the onset, we didn't want to make a patriotic film. We were intent on entertaining the audience even if they don't care about the Pokhran tests per se. The takeaway from my film is that they heads should be filled with a sense of awe about what India pulled off in 1998. My intent is not to make a patriotic film, but to make an honest, engaging thriller which is told with credibility and simplicity. It's not a propaganda film. When I announced this film, they thought that I was making a flagship project for the Congress party, but I am not making this film for any political party. This is not an anti-Pakistan film or an anti-America or anti-China film. But the facts remain that America was testing their nuclear capability and so was China then. China was also supplying materials to Pakistan. These are facts known to everyone. We are not saying whether that's good or bad.

This film has been a laboured project with your fallout over finances with your co-producer KriArj Entertainment. Did the movie suffer a lot?

Yes, there is going to be collateral damage when you don't choose your partners rightly. I paid the price for it. I want to say it on record that I am thankful to the high court and the judge for ruling in my favour in just two minutes after he saw what I was going through. He didn't want the film to suffer and wanted it to release smoothly. But we just didn't have the requisite time to market this film. Dubai was one of our cities that we wanted to come and visit to promote the film. Unfortunately, we couldn't due to this issue. But it is what it is.

Quote Unquote:

"I have been through a very rough patch as a producer. I am a smarter producer now. Now, I understand that you need to choose your partners right and understand where the money comes from. It is a lesson for all of us that we should not to go with people who promise you money, but choose people who are established players in the business.

John Abraham: After watching Parmanu, you will feel proud

John Abraham: After watching Parmanu, you will feel proud to be john abraham: After watching Parmanu you will feel proud to be an indian

Parmanu releases on May 25.

Before we settle down to talk, John Abraham asks if I will watch his latest production venture Parmanu. Giving him a nod, I begin by asking him why he thought of making a film on how India became a nuclear power, 20 years after the historical event, and he says because it was important.

Parmanu revolves around the nuclear bomb test explosions conducted by the Indian Army at Pokhran in 1998. Revealing this and much more about what went behind telling the thrilling story, John in an exclusive chat with indianexpress.com said, "Parmanu is based on a true story. 90 percent of the plot is factual. The only fictitious elements are the names which we have changed of some people because we got rights and biopic issues. Like in Madras Caf, my character was fictional, so it is in Parmanu. You need to tell the story from someone's eyes.

In Parmanu, John also plays the lead. So how was it donning multiple roles? "It's a lot of people who put this mission together. So having a fantastic cast, having a fantastic production crew, I didn't feel the pressure of being a producer or an actor, he said.

Parmanu also stars Diana Penty, Boman Irani, Vikas Gupta and Yogendra Tiku among others. Director Abhishek Sharma came up with the idea and shared it with John, who quickly agreed to produce it too. However, in the past few weeks, Parmanu faced a lot of production and release issues. The film made news due to a clash between co-producers JA Entertainment and KriArj Entertainment. This led to its release date getting shifted from May 4 to May 25. This, after it was already postponed in December 2017 and then in February 2018.

Parmanu also stars Diana Penty in the role of Capt. Ambalika.

Clearing the air about the entire trouble and how the box office performance wasn't his concern, John explained, "Yes, there have been talks of dates announced. Two of the dates I wasn't even a part of. Those dates were announced by a producer who isn't a part of this film anymore. So, things happened in the middle. They were tough. I think the collateral damage, I always say, is we don't have enough time to market a film. To educate the audience that Parmanu means atom, parmanu pareekshan' means atomic tests, nuclear tests. And then you need to take things back to 20 years ago, May 11, and say this is what made India a superpower. This is why it is cool to be an Indian. So we don't have that kind of time but nevertheless, better late than never.

"We are happy we are releasing this film in the month of May when the tests actually happened 20 years ago. So, sometimes things happen for the best. At the end of the day, box office tells how good or bad your film is, but yes, opening is how good or bad your marketing is. We are trying our best now to make ends meet and I think we are doing a pretty decent job and the buzz around the trailer is very positive, remarked John.

John Abraham plays the character of Capt. Ashwat Rana in Parmanu.

John's previous films Force 2 and Dishoom and his upcoming releases Satyamev Jayate and Batla House feature the actor playing men in uniform. So, is it his latest liking for the attire or just a coincidence? Hinting that he doesn't really wear a uniform in Parmanu as there is a twist in the tale, he said, "I just think I go by the script and the story and coincidently my four really good films, starting with Parmanu, Satyamev Jayate, RAW and Batla House, all have me associated with some kind of uniform. Diana and I aren't supposed to be in a uniform. When you see Parmanu, there is a surprise factor. But that you need to see the film to figure out yourself.

John Abraham plays the role of Captain Ashwat Rana in Parmanu. "We believe Parmanu is a very fast engaging thriller. So, go and enjoy the roller coaster ride. At the end of it when you walk out, you'll feel proud to be an Indian. That's all I can say, he signed off.

Movie Review: Parmanu The Story of Pokhran

Review by Bollywood Hungama News Network

3.5

When India got independence in 1947, it was a challenge for those who assumed power. After all, they had to start from scratch in several areas and aspects. These challenges continue till date but it's heartening to see that despite a lot of hurdles, India has made great progress in a lot of fields. One of the achievements was becoming a full-fledged nuclear state and this happened due to a series of nuclear tests carried out in Rajasthan town in 1998. The entire story behind these nuclear tests is quite fascinating and surprisingly, no filmmaker had picked it up in these two decades. Finally, actor-producer John Abraham took the challenge and has come out with PARMANU THE STORY OF POKHRAN. So does the film turn out to be an engaging and thrilling fare? Or does it fail in its endeavour? Let's analyse.

PARMANU THE STORY OF POKHRAN is the story of those people who secretly carried out a series of nuclear bomb test explosions in Pokhran on May 11, 1998. Ashwath Rana (John Abraham) is from the research department of the Central Government and in 1995, he advises the Prime Minister's Office to conduct nuclear bomb tests in order to achieve supremacy in this field and establish fear among the nuclear powers of the world. The plan gets accepted but he's not made a part of it. His plan is also not studied well. As a result, USA's satellites catch India preparing for the tests red handed. India is left red faced and Ashwath is made the scapegoat. He is removed from his job and shifts to Mussoorie with wife Sushma (Anuja Sathe) and son Prahlad. For the next 3 years, Ashwath does odd jobs while Anuja runs the house by working in an observatory. In 1998, Atal Bihari Vajpayee is made the Prime Minister. His principle secretary Himanshu Sharma (Boman Irani) summons Ashwath and asks him to help with the nuclear tests. Ashwath agrees and devises a plan to prepare and conduct the tests without the USA getting a whiff of it. He also prepares a team comprising of Ambalika (Diana Penty), Dr. Viraf Wadia (Aditya Hitkari), Dr. Naresh Sinha (Yogendra Tikku), Major Prem Singh (Vikas Kumar) and Purunganathan. How they manage to work together and put India on world nuclear map forms the rest of the film.

Saiwyn Quadras, Sanyuktha Chawla Shaikh and Abhishek Sharma's story is very promising and novel as it has entertainment and feeling of nationalism in adequate doses. Saiwyn Quadras, Sanyuktha Chawla Shaikh and Abhishek Sharma's screenplay is neat and simple and they ensure that complex technical language is not used. As a result, even the layman can understand what's going on.

PARMANU THE STORY OF POKHRAN has a shaky start. The 1995 sequence doesn't involve viewers properly. It's when Ashwath meets Himanshu is when the film picks up. From here, the film goes on another level and it's fun to see Ashwath assembling his team and fooling USA. The intermission comes at a great point. The second half is better as the Pakistani spy (Darshan Pandya) and CIA agent Daniel (Mark Bennington) try their best to fail Team Ashwath's mission. There's also sudden humour quotient added and it works very well especially in the confrontation scene between Ashwath and Sushma. The best is reserved for the finale. It is very well handled and the patriotic fervor comes out beautifully.

Saiwyn Quadras, Sanyuktha Chawla Shaikh and Abhishek Sharma's dialogues are nothing great but look real and conversational. Abhishek Sharma's direction flows quite easily and is to the point. He very nicely packs in a lot in 130 minutes. However, one wishes if the tension levels could have gone higher. A film like this should have had more edge of the seat moments for an added impact. Also, though the team is shown facing roadblocks, it seemed a bit convenient at most places. Thankfully, the film has enough plusses that overpower these glitches.

John Abraham delivers one of the best performances of his career. His act is subtle and yet leaves a mark. His character has suffered a lot and this bit comes out very well. Also he's not shown as an invincible killing machine which is his image. Yet he pulls it off very well! Diana Penty has a crucial part and essays the no nonsense character very well. Boman Irani delivers an incredible performance and it was a pleasure to see him on screen after ages. Vikas Kumar is totally believable as an army major. Yogendra Tiku raises laughs while Aditya Hitkari looks quite smart and gives an impressive performance. Darshan Pandya leaves a mark. Anuja Sathe is very good and manages to create an impact with her supporting role. Mark Bennington and Zachary Coffin (Stephen) are okay.

Sachin-Jigar's music doesn't get much scope and all songs are relegated to the background. Thare Vaaste' is the only song that stands out, more so because of the execution. Sandeep Chowta's background score is theatrical and impactful but has a major Hans Zimmer hangover which could have been avoided. Zubin Mistry's cinematography is quite nice and captures the barren locales of Rajasthan well. Rameshwar S Bhagat's editing is slick. T P Abid and Sandeep S Ravade's production design is very authentic and realistic. Amar Shetty's action is sans any gory.

On the whole, PARMANU THE STORY OF POKHRAN is an excellent saga that has a big chance of working at the box office despite the low buzz. The patriotic fervor and simple, effective narration works big time. Recommended!
