One more Johnny Walker song- I love this guy and his songs. Also helps that they were sung by Mohammad Rafi, who's an absolute favorite 😳😃.
In this one, Madhubala ably matches steps with him!

Dekhta chala gaya main zindagi ki raah mein
har koi kadam kadam pe mast hai gunaah mein
tu bhi ek gunaah kar, dil kisi ki chaah kar

- Gateway of India (1957)

Madan Mohan's music is so out of the ordinary in this one. The chemistry and timing between the 2 actors is just fab. Rajinder Krishan's lyrics add to the fun.
Just watch the part when Madhubala says " Khayaal-e-zulf-e-yaar kar, nazar ko beqaraar kar" and Johnny tries rolling his eyes and giving up says "Nahi hoti"! 🤣
And then she says "Zara kareeb aa mere"
and he's lying on the couch and says "Arre apna bhi majboor hai aur tu bahut hi door hai"! 😆
The guy on the piano is Johnny's real-life brother. Johnny Walker was born Badruddin Kazi and was a B.E.S.T bus conductor when Balraj Sahni spotted him entertaining people around him. His screen name was taken from the popular brand of whisky, probably because of the many drunkard roles he played on screen.

Hum bekhudi mein tumko pukaare chale gaye
Saagar mein zindagi ko utaare chale gaye

Dekha kiye tumhe hum banke deewana
utra jo nasha to humne ye jaane
Saare woh zindagi ke sahare chale gaye

- Kala Pani (1958)

This song! God this song! From the very first note Rafi starts to hum to the way he alternates sadness and seduction just gives me goosebumps. Add to that the absolute sexiness that Dev Anand exudes on screen, S.D Burman's melodious tune and lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri and you have magic unparalleled.

This movie got Dev Anand his first Filmfare Award and I absolutely adore Dev-Madhubala's chemistry in this one! She's a journalist who finds herself irresistibly drawn to him, while he's seeking to free his innocent father from prison over a crime he did not commit. The bulk of the film involves Karan (Dev Anand) seeking out witnesses and trying to gather proof of his father's innocence while Asha (Madhubala) initially misunderstands him when she finds him canoodling with Kishori (Nalini Jaywant), she soon repents when she learns that Kishori is a key witness who lied to implicate his father and Karan is just playing a game to win her over. Kishori, however, actually falls in love with him (who wouldn't? 😳) and helps him even after learning of his deception. This movie also has the famous "Accha ji main haari" and "Nazar laagi raaja tore bangle par" but this song stands apart. I don;t think there could ever be a Best of Rafi or Best of Dev Anand or for that matter, a best of S.D Burman without this song featured!

Kabhi khud pe kabhi haalaat pe rona aaya
baat nikli toh har ek baat pe rona aaya

- Hum Dono (1961)

Hum Dono is a musical triumph. There's not a single song from this movie I don't love. Be it "Abhi na jao chhodkar" or "Main zindagi ka saath", or "Allah tero naam" or "Prabhu tero naam" or "Jahan mein aisa kaun hai", every song is woven with such melody that it's hard to believe it was Jaidev's debut venture. 👏
Dev Anand is in love with Sadhna whose father, a rich man, thinks he's a good-for-nothing who isn't worthy of marrying his daughter. Stung, Dev decides to make something of himself and come back to claim Sadhana when he's "laayak". He comes across a recruitment drive for the Indian Army and on an impulse enrolls. He's soon made captain and to his surprise, meets his doppelganger, a Major, in the same military base. The two become fast friends and in this song, the Captain recalls his love while the Major reminisces his beloved wife (Nanda) who he's left behind. War ensues, the Major is killed and the Captain who goes to deliver the tragic news to his family is mistaken by his mother and wife to be the Major and he has to play along.
Great movie, great performances, beautiful songs.
Sahir, as usual, is brilliance personified with his lyrics, especially

Kaun rota hai kisi aur ki khatir ae dost
sabko apni hi kisi baat pe rona aaya 😭😭 👏
Just listen to Rafi's mastery when he sings the second stanza and in the last line when he drags out a harkat on "rona aaya"- goosebumps!! 👏

In old movies there would always be that Vat 69 bottle in sharab scenes or songs 😆

Yeh kaisa gham sajna pyasa din pyasi shaam
Aaa terey hothon se lag jaaoon bankey jaam

No one posted this song yet, so here goes-
Ek ghar Banaoonga - Tere Ghar ke Saamne (1963)

The picturization of this is as delightful as the movie. Rakesh (Dev Anand) is an architect who unwittingly ends up agreeing to build two houses on two adjoining plots that belong to arch enemies, one of them being his own father and the other, the father of the girl, Sulekha (Nutan) that he's fallen in love with. It's a really fun movie with Rakesh wooing Sulekha and she being unable to resist his charms 😳 and then her horror at discovering that he's the son of the buddhha, khoosat old man who her father hates! 😆 While Rakesh's father (Om Prakash) thinks that Rakesh has charmed some Rajkumari and Sulekha's father (Harindranath Chattopadhyay) adores Rakesh but has no idea who his dad is!
The dialogue is delightful and witty and I love how understated the performances are except at the end where it all goes over-the-top melodramatic. Still, it's a fun movie and this is a fun song!
Rakesh vows to build the house opposite hers and Sulekha appears in his whisky glass telling him it won't be easy! I love the part where Rakesh's assistant (played by Rashid Khan) drops an ice cube into the glass and seeing Sulekha shiver, Rakesh gives him an angry look and proceeds to remove it and thrusts it in his mouth!😉😆 Goldie Anand's talent is so evident in this.

Lyrics are by Hasrat Jaipuri and music by the Navketan staple - S.D Burman, Mohd Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar lend their voices.

Waheeda Rehman looked so beautiful in this song and this is where I discovered her as a fabulous dancer. Such graceful and fluid movements. And the dance is so dignified even though she's intoxicated. It really made an impression on me.

I love both these songs from Mere Humdum Mere Dost (1968) with music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal and lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri.
In the first, he's actually faking it, trying to take her pride and snobbishness down a bit. And in the second he's actually trying to drown his pain over losing his love.

How does Mohd Rafi do this? How does he modulate his voice so perfectly to fit in the all the masti in the first and the deep, deep angst in the second? Truly he's a class apart.

Agree totally. I love this song, I love how Lata sings it and the tune itself by S.D Burman is brilliant. The Lyrics by Neeraj are terrific too! And Waheeda Rehman simply shines in the song. She owns it. She looks beautiful, dances like a dream - even though I found the choreography somewhat off-putting in places, she carries off the weirdest of steps with so much poise, it's hard not to applaud her. I would've surely posted this song in this topic, thank you for doing it!

I was hunting for a Dilip Kumar song to include here, how did I miss this one?
Mujhe duniyawalon sharaabi na samjho
main peeta nahi hoon pilayi gayi hai

- Leader (1964)

The pic quality is horrible, btw, so if anyone finds a better version please post it.

Music: Naushad
Lyrics: Shakeel Badayuni
Singer: Mohammad Rafi

There- another example of Rafi's voice oozing drunkenness when the man was a complete teetotaler! How did he do it??
