Didn't Amitabh replace Rajesh Khanna? Does it mean he destroyed him?

HW did destroy lots of European industries. No amount of good stories and good content can overcome the kind of money and technology and big blockbuster appeal that HW brings. They also tend to empty out other 'white' industries because their actors and other creative people head to HW for bigger names and paychecks.

So now you might have the occasional German, French or Italian movie winning awards and recognition but they don't sell tickets and they don't do much for their industries either.

The reason Asian industries have survived is because there is a big cultural barrier. In India those barriers are coming down because a huge amount of people speak English so the movies are easily accessible to them. Local industries can't match their vfx, technologies, explosions and so on. And it's those tentpole movies that keep an industry running, not those high content small movies that nobody buys tickets for.

He himself has said it - they have quality and quantity. No other reason needed to watch a HW flick over a BW one. Quality matters. period.

His brain is working overtime. Bollywood movie suck. You've got remake after a remake. You've got actors like Sid, Varun, Salman, Alia that are mediocre. Actually, look at your own son. He's not even that great. There are barely any good movies. I recently saw Village Superstar and Omerta and was impressed with both films. Way better than what mainstream bollywood has. Kanagan Ranaut is leading with new films. So is Rajkumar Rao and lots of other actors. Maybe you should take your money and invest your money there.

Did anyone actually read the article? 😕 He recounted something from his past and told us what the views of Hollywood producers are. And that was back in 1993...has Hollywood taken over Bollywood in Asia? No na, then what is this hue and cry over. Hollywood is now trying its best to take token Chinese and Indian actors to attract the markets but so fr has failed.

And as much as i am surprised at Avengers doing all this business, it is just one movie. I am sure before this Titanic, Avatars ect also did great in India. But that doesn't mean Hollywood will replace Bollywood. That can never happen.

That's true for Bollywood and Hindi too. Bollywood has destroyed a lot of regional industries. Hindi language too killed a lot of regional languages.

It's as simple as any sector... when you have competition you strive to do better... so if you want ppl to watch Indian movies work to make them better...

HW is also not doing so well if you look at the bigger picture. Only superhero films are still working and most of their other films are remakes too.
Anyway this just shows that people are tired of mediocrity and star kids and people should now boycott these mediocre star kid product films.

Not true at all. I don't know what Amitabh Bachchan is smoking. Healthy competition makes industries work harder and give consumers better choices.

Bollywood is thriving. It may not produce the mega-blockbusters of yesteryears but the number of small production houses making quality films has increased.

Regional cinema in India is thriving. The Telugu film industry gave us the international blockbuster Baahubali. In addition, Gujarati, Marathi, Bengali and other film industries have penetrated Hindi speaking markets thanks to Netflix and better promotion options of the digital age.

Internationally, Korean cinema is thriving with international hits like Snowpiercer, Train to Busan and Handmaiden. The Busan film festival has become more renowned. Similarly, Japanese and Mandarin films have gotten wider followings.

Two Oscar-nominated best films this year were international - Shape of Water (Mexican) and Call me By your Name (Italian).

So no, Hollywood has not destroyed a single movie market. In fact its opened international cinema to western English speaking audiences.

Slightly OT: Did you happen to watch any Korean movies? I started to pay attention to Korean cinema after I stumbled upon an article that listed Hindi movies ripping off and remaking Korean movies. Man...they probably don't have the budget like Hollywood does or even Bollywood, but most of their movies (at least, the ones that I've watched) are awesome. Train to Busan was a great movie but my favourite remains The Handmaiden. Argh...The Handmaiden is truly a cinematic experience that leaves me breathless. The direction, acting, cinematography, music score, costumes etc. is just something else.

😳 Eerkk..sorry for sounding so stupidly excited but I saw you mentioned The Handmaiden hence my essay.

Yes, back to the topic...what does AB smoke?
