Amitabh Bachchan is busy with the
promotions of his upcoming film 102 Not
Out. It also stars Rishi Kapoor in the lead
role.
In an interview with Indian Express, Big B
got candid about Indian cinema, Hollywood
film industry, and movies and shows on the
digital platform.
Amitabh said, "Speed of communication and
the alternatives that people have for
entertainment has become so good. Earlier,
it was only cinema. Today you have TV,
computer, mobile and with communication
coming in so rapid, you are exposed to stuff
that's coming from every corner of the
world. So, they are used to seeing
something and in some cases
in perhaps greater quality than ours and
they want the same from us. So, we have to
keep re-inventing."
Amitabh Bachchan said that Hollywood has
destroyed the local industry wherever it has
gone. "This I was told in 1993 when I was
on a casual visit to New York and I met
some studios who were wanting to meet
me and they told me, You better get your
house in order because India is the new
frontier and Americans are coming.' And
everywhere Hollywood has gone, it has
destroyed the local industry whether it's
England, Italy or Germany, they just come
and take over. They have the money and the
expertise. They have the quality and
quantity. We are fighting against them," said
Big B.
He added, "I still believe that emotionally we
are stronger but we will not able to match
them in technology. But I have to say that
the younger generation of our film industry
are absolutely aware of what's happening in
the rest of the world. And they are spending
a lot of money and energy to make their
films equally big."
Amitabh Bachchan also said that people
should not patronise Hollywood films when
they release.
The actor said, "So, whenever their films
come out, please don't patronize them
because we are fighting against an ogre of
Hollywood from overtaking us and
destroying our industry. I spent some time
with these young filmmakers and they think
so big and massive. They don't have any
doubts about how to do things. They tell me,
We will do this and that,' and I ask them,
But how will you manage?'. They assure me
they know how to do it."

Honestly, I dont like the way he thinks. If Hollywood movies are doing good then we need to learn from them and improve our standards, not patronize the audience to not watch better movies just cause it will affect his industry.

why should I pay for krish 3 when I have option to watch avengers!
Bollywood business is going down because movies these days are not entertaining enough. In future hw movies will take a big chunk of share. shoving down not so good looking star kids with limited talent is also turning people off. For eg if i have ti watch some big movie i have to tolerate Aliya in every single of them. Nothing against her but she is shoved down as the best thing ever to exist on planet!

Better start making good content films.
Why should I pay my hard earned money on mediocre films, when I can watch better films!!

We are in a global age, you can't restrict us to watch only Indian films.

Not true at all. I don't know what Amitabh Bachchan is smoking. Healthy competition makes industries work harder and give consumers better choices.
Bollywood is thriving. It may not produce the mega-blockbusters of yesteryears but the number of small production houses making quality films has increased.

Regional cinema in India is thriving. The Telugu film industry gave us the international blockbuster Baahubali. In addition, Gujarati, Marathi, Bengali and other film industries have penetrated Hindi speaking markets thanks to Netflix and better promotion options of the digital age.

Internationally, Korean cinema is thriving with international hits like Snowpiercer, Train to Busan and Handmaiden. The Busan film festival has become more renowned. Similarly, Japanese and Mandarin films have gotten wider followings.

Two Oscar-nominated best films this year were international - Shape of Water (Mexican) and Call me By your Name (Italian).

So no, Hollywood has not destroyed a single movie market. In fact its opened international cinema to western English speaking audiences.

Did he, in effect, just say "don't watch HW movies because they are better than ours "? Arrogant entitled jerk! Native language films always have an advantage if the films are even kind of equivalent. Try working to make better movies that can compete instead of asking the audience for charity!
And one more thing. BW absolutely CAN afford to make good films if they stop imitating HW. Stop stealing and rehashing western plots and tell Indian stories the West doesn't. Stop spending money on VFX that never looks as good as HWs and spend it on developing good writers and directors and maybe some acting classes.
