He just assumed it was the prettier girl which was Kareena. But along the way, small things kept cropping up to show that there was something wrong. He just kept ignoring it because he thought it is nothing and unless you know the truth, you can't say exactly what is wrong. But when he realises it was Rani, he goes back to her. The spell breaks.

I think the point is that you fall for a personality and try to reconcile that with the person who is in front of you. You're not in love with this person, you just want this person to be the one who you fell for. But when you realise it is a fraud, you don't want anything to do with this. Salman may have been the better looking one, the more charming one or even the able one, but she didn't fall for these qualities, she fell for the poetry. And that was what Salman lacked. You can only distract a person from what they really want for that much time, later they will want that very thing which you can't give them. And if it is a fraud then it is that much worse.

But she spent so much time with Salman, and they were quite compatible with each other. She never felt any sort of romantic feeling for Sanjay Dutt, despite spending time with him as a friend.

I know the ending of the movie was absurd and could not understand how Madhuri went with Sanjay. When throughout the movie they showed her falling in love with Salman's character.
Mujhsey Dosti Karoge was different at least Hrithiks character knew something was odd.

@anjs and theeki: Okay I haven't watched it so I gave my point of view keeping MDK in mind. Frankly, the problem I had with MDK was that Rani shouldn't have accepted Hrithik since he was so shallow that he fell for Kareena due to her beauty. That was really insulting to Rani I felt.
Baki yeah if they didn't show any such thing, then I don't know. Will have to watch the movie for that.

You can watch it. Its a beautiful movie with some of the best songs of Bollywood..beautiful screenplay & performances by the leads. Just the ending was absurd. But its worth a watch.

Such a beautiful movie with some of the best songs ruined with a crappy ending!

I too never found the ending convincing. ...

okay...you should watch it, its a good movie and i love salman-madhuri pairing except for the ending... Sanjay meets MAdhuri first and falls for her, later finds out that she loves his poems and the one who writes it (obv him) even after be-friending her, he doesnt tell her the truth. LAter Salman, his childhood friend and also the guy whose parents adopted him as their own, comes to meet him, and falls for Madhuri. Since Sanjay knows that she loves the poet, he guides Salman to act as the poet to get her love (I am not 100% sure if Sanjay advices or Salman thinks of it on his own, but Sanjay does encourage him). Salman woos Madhuri and they sing songs in the haseen waadiya...LAter the parents visit and the marriage proposal is sent. Even engagement happens...all the while Sanjay nursing his broken heart and stalking the love birds 🤢 Soon Salman comes to know he is stalking them, finds out that he is the poet she loves and creates a situation to make her feel he himself is cheating on her (in short sacrifices for Sanjay). When she confronts Sanjay for making her meet Salman, she finds out he is the poet she loved...so in the end MAdhuri goes back to Sanjay and Salman sacrifices.

For me, Sanjay was the weird guy who doesnt tell her the truth despite knowing that she loves him. Encourages his friend to get involved despite knowing that she loves someone else. And stalks them even after they get engaged.

Forgot to add that Madhuri and Sanjay spend a lot of time together, hanging out and not even once she feels anything romantic for him.

Oh okay!!! Looks like a movie I will like 😃

I also remember this movie Jaaneman starring Salman and Preity and Akshay. Salman guided Akshay to become the person that Preity will like and it worked to some extent but in the end the truth came out and Preity went back to Salman.

Honestly, I think the execution in this film may not be correct. But the idea must be that the girl falls in the love with the poet and his thoughts. The poet likes her too but hesitates. The guy whom the poet owes a lot likes her as well and the poet thinks it is his duty to make way for that guy. So, he tells her this girl's likes and dislikes, asks him to pose as the guy she loves. BUT the guy should have found it difficult to act as someone else and the girl should have felt something was odd in some scenes at least. So, maybe there they went wrong. Didn't execute it properly.
