He just assumed it was the prettier girl which was Kareena. But along the way, small things kept cropping up to show that there was something wrong. I think the point is that you fall for a personality and try to reconcile that with the person who is in front of you. You're not in love with this person, you just want this person to be the one who you fell for. But when you realise it is a fraud, you don't want anything to do with this. Salman may have been the better looking one, the more charming one or even the able one, but she didn't fall for these qualities, she fell for the poetry. And that was what Salman lacked. You can only distract a person from what they really want for that much time, later they will want that very thing which you can't give them. And if it is a fraud then it is that much worse.

there were no such scenes in Saajan from what I recall.. Madz was heartbroken when Salman pulled off the little playboy stunt.. She never had any discomfort with regards to Salman not being the person she was supposedly in love with

On a sidenote: I never get how you can fall in love with a poet only because he writes beautiful poems.. He could be a 60 year old budha for all you know😆
