Padmaavat: Controversial Indian movie tops the Kiwi box-office

A controversial Indian movie has topped the New Zealand box-office, despite only screening in 27 cinemas.

Based on Malik Muhammad Jayasi' 1540 poem Padmavat, Padmaavat is an epic drama which tells the story of legendary Hindu Rajput queen Rani Padmavati.

One of the most expensive Indian movies ever made (the budget was estimated to be around NZ$41m), its release was delayed after numerous protests by people concerned about the depiction of Padmavati and that the movie misrepresented Hindu history.

Surajpal Amu, a state-level media coordinator of India's governing political party Bharatiya Janata Party, even offered a reward of more than NZ$2M to anyone who beheaded director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and the film's star, Deepika Padukone.

However, the dispute seems to have only raised interest in the movie, with it raking in $419, 161 between Thursday and Sunday at Kiwi cinemas, more than $100,000 ahead of its nearest rival The Maze Runner: Death Cure and leaving new releases featuring Hollywood stars Matt Damon (Downsizing) and Margot Robbie (I, Tonya).

Even more impressive is Padmaavat's screen average a whopping $15,524.

That's almost four times the average taking from a cinema for the third Maze Runner installment, which averaged $4653 on its 69 screens.

One Kiwi movie fared slightly better though the Samoan-infused dramedy Hibiscus & Ruthless.

Stallone Vaiaoga-Ioasa's self-funded, self-distributed follow-up to Three Wise Cousins had a solid opening, earning $125,848 from 20 screens (at a screen average of $6292).

It is scheduled to open on more screens on Thursday.

The New Zealand result for Padmaavat was reflective of worldwide interest in the movie.

Variety reports that it earned more than NZ$41m around the globe on its opening weekend, including NZ$31m million in India, despite distributors in four states choosing not to release the film for fear of mob violence.

Padmaavat First Tuesday Business
Wednesday 31 January 2018 12.00 IST
Box Office India Trade Network

Padmaavat did very well on its first Tuesday with business of 13.25 crore nett and this figure has come with normal weekday ticket rates. The drop from the previous day is around 7% which is excellent. In the North the collections are better than day one at many centers.

The film which took a huge start in Mumbai and South is now holding best in the North. Mumbai is also outstanding but the holds are less than North due to the better start. In Nizam / Andhra it may turn out to be the biggest Hindi grosser of all time outside Bahubali - The Conclusion. The business of Padmaavat till date is as follows.

Wednesday - 4,25,00,000 apprx

Thursday - 17,75,00,000 apprx

Friday - 31,00,00,000 apprx

Saturday - 27,00,00,000 apprx

Sunday - 29,75,00,000 apprx

Monday - 14,25,00,000 apprx

Tuesday - 13,25,00,000 apprx

Grand Total - 1,37,25,00,000

Note the Tuesday figures may have plus/minus 5% variance due to the clustered release of the film.

Padmaavat Sneaks Into Worldwide Top Ten
Wednesday 31 January 2018 11.30 IST
Box Office India Trade Network

Padmaavat managed to sneak into the top ten worldwide openings of all time as it set an all time record in Overseas becoming the biggest opening weekend of all time. The India position of the film was 14th. It is the only non Khan film in the top ten while in the top fifteen there are two non Khan films Padmaavat and Golmaal Again

The interesting thing is that if we give a value to the territories when it was not released the worldwide weekend would be bigger than Tiger Zinda Hai at 195 crore. But for this to happen it would have needed huge luck as the controversy to create the hype would have to be there which did happen and then a clean release which did not happen. Below are the top fifteen opening weekends of all time. (All collections for Hindi language only and three days only)

1. Sultan - 210.50 crore

2. Bahubali: The Conclusion - 209.68 crore

3. Dangal - 198.64 crore

4. Dhoom 3 - 194.30 crore

5. Tiger Zinda Hai - 189.24 crore

6. Bajrangi Bhaijaan - 187.24 crore

7. Prem Ratan Dhan Payo - 185.15 crore

8. PK - 175.78 crore

9. Happy New Year - 174.56 crore

10. Padmaavat - 162.49 crore

11. Chennai Express - 159.53 crore

12. Dilwale - 144.83 crore

13. Golmaal Again - 134.47 crore

14. Raees - 128.14 crore

15. Kick - 125.55 crore
