I don't understand why some members get so touchy and sensitive when it comes to talking about "looks"...I'm sorry but this is the entertainment industry...looks ARE important. No matter how much you denial it...its still the truth!

That's why even when" average" looking stars give extraordinary performances like Irfan or Rajkumar Rao- they cant reach "superstardom"...because they lack the looks/superstar appeal.

and thats why when someone better looking like Hrithik or Varun Dhawan gives a strong performance or delivers a big hit... they get the superstardom tag with the acknowledgement of knowing how to act and deliver...AKA the whole package...but when Irfan/Rajkummar do the same...they're still not in the rat race. Even though they both swiped the awards this year, I can guarantee you the average audience do not know who they are...and also don't want to know 😆 Not trying to demean them...I personally love Rajkumar Rao...but lets be real here...nobody is fan-girling over them anywhere 😆

You cant deny the power of looks...that's why Deepika got a million chances and when she finally proved herself, she became a superstar...that's why people like Shraddha Kapoor get work and people like Parineeti struggle for work.

Looks are not an important factor in the realm of cinema even in Hollywood

in fact the indian audience doesn't connect with the " good looking"ish men in BW

good looking girls with no talent: yes, they are accepted with open arms 😆

Sure.. but the truth is, beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder... eyes/mind/heart/whatever, it's ultimately - subjective.

While you may consider that looks are important in this showbiz industry, some might hold a different opinion. What is truth to you, might not be the same for someone else.

In all this talk about physical appearance, which is super subjective and hard to describe why we may like someone's appearance besides the general superficial expression of our admiration - we have people forcing their opinions on one another - ignoring the basic fact that, no two eyes see ANYTHING in this life the same way.

It's as simple as being asked to describe the flavor of apple, to justify why you like it to a person who doesn't like it - I will not understand the WAY you enjoy an apple even if I like it as well !

Whenever I really think about WHY i like someone, why I drool over someone, why someone makes me blush... I can never find a reason honestly.
We cannot make sense to OURSELVES, why we like someone's appearance - sure he has a "nice" face, "nice" eyes, "nice" smile ...can we really describe, what that "nice" is ?? To our own self ??

It was never possible for me personally... and I've seen some people dislike Aishwarya Rai's appearance genuinely - whyyy you ask them? They just say they don't like her appearance - they cannot describe the "why" to me, I can never understand "why" they don't like her..

This may be a showbiz industry, but if people say they care about looks, they do, they don't care - then they don't.. There's no why or how, and one certainly cannot force their opinion of whether they ought to care or not. Because, in the end, it's all subjective.

Yeah, it is ridiculous to pretend looks don't matter in a visual industry. Especially in BW which in nepotism central and acting is an after thought.
I don't think Ajay Devgan or Ayushman or Raj Kumar Rao is great to look at particularly but they are more often than not exceptional performers who tend to disappear into the role. So you are looking at the character not the actor.

But you cannot expect me to have the same standards for a masala hero or a flowerpot role. If you are trying to play the part of sexy girl friend, well girlfriend you better be toned and tight. I don't consider thunder thighs and jiggly rolls of fat sexy. Or a big paunch 🤢 That died with the 90s. I will make a comment on that. Say whatever you want about accepting body image but for me if you are part of a visual industry be fit if you are playing sexy or flower pot roles. Exceptions are of course there like Thalaiva but not for me.

Yes looks are subjective, looks aren't everything, looks alone doesn't matter etc - truisms indeed

But I think what TM is saying is

Why pretend looks are not important, don't matter at all in entertainment Industry(BW in particular)
esp for girls...

Why object to any criticism about looks?

Physical attractiveness is necessary in entertainment industry. You need to have the appeal/personality to pull the audience. Reason why they go to gym, have hair transplant, have plastic surgery, wear designer clothes. wear makeup.

Nobody is denying that "Looks are Important". What people actually say is that the "complete package" is more important and can compensate for looks. The "complete package" is not just acting ability but personality and temperament of the star as well.

To illustrate:

No matter how attractive Hrithik Roshan is and how much he's worked on his body - no one will pay for a three-hour film of him smoldering and showing off his body, maybe some extreme stan might, but even people who think Hrithik is the hottest will say we need more. So Hrithik has to act, dance, smile, interact with fans as well.

Sometimes that is not enough. The film matters as well. He may be a complete package as an actor, but when a film is bad even he crashes too.

Many exceptionally good-looking actors have failed in the industry because of their lack of talent otherwise. Many complete packages failed because they didn't do good films.

Another aspect people do not factor in is the purpose of the film and target audience. Looks may be important for masses, but not for people who enjoy independent flicks. So in the cases of some films - looks are not important.

Also, I will not hold the fact that Rajkumar Rao not having a rabid following because "looks are important". Amidst all of Bollywood's megastars SRK is the most ordinary looking. If he weren't a celebrity, most people wouldn't rate him as a hot catch either. He has a misshapen nose and used to stammer. While he is a good actor with the right direction and restraint, he is also known for extreme overacting.

SRK is a classic example where overall charisma compensate for both looks and inconsistent acting
